Miss Teen USA 2007 - South Carolina answers a question

Upon first viewing, all i could think was "wow," then i kind of felt sorry for the girl. Her response ranks up there with the worst of Bush's gaffes. What is going on down there in South Carolina? Can anyone speak to what kind of schools they have?

Question (Aimee Teegarden): Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can’t locate the US on a world map. Why do you think this is?

Answer (Caitlin Upton; 2007 Miss Teen USA South Carolina): I personally believe that US Americans are unable to do so because, ah…some people out there in our nation don’t have maps, and ah, I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and uh, the Iraq, everywhere like, such as…and. I believe that they should, our education over here, in the US, should help the US; or should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries. So we will be able to build up our future for our children.
And no one sings me lullabyes
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky....

i caught a bit of this the other night. i can't help but think of that dateline predator show. seeing some of these girls... how can anyone wonder how these guys start to sexualize younger and younger women? we parade 16 year old girls around in bikinis on national tv... then flip out when a 28 year old dude online thinks it's ok to hook up with a girl that age coming onto him on chris hansen's orders?

Damn and all that effort that went into trying to memorize the fucking "feed the hungry", "peace on earth"......and then this..
The worst enemies of music? Money and Mathematics. Combined with music, they both do the exact opposite of what they're supposed to do. Money makes music cheap, mathematics makes it stupid and predictable.

yeah...definitely seems that she had expected a different question...for which she had prepared. i'm not always so smooth when on the spot, but this is pretty bad. she ended up as the third runner up.

her answer should have been, "why the fuck would you need a map to find America if you're already IN America?". I mean come on, good looking chicks are SUPPOSED to be stupid. but my god, it's a stupid fucking question too.

Totally!! its the culture....it freaks me out sometimes because when I was that age I thought things would change in 10 years- and they havent. I have many little girl cousins and it saddens me. Its whole vulnerability issue. Same thing with seeing young boys with their shirts of in ads. Not empowering at all...

If a person isnt responsible for their actions than who is?? Even if its for pure exploitation, I dont think that means they are only on for men to watch them. No matter how deluded, a lot of people view this as family-entertainment. Are you saying that the pageants "taunt" adult men??? Are you saying that we should be outraged at pageants as well, or just condone the pedophile behaviour because society/culture glamourizes young females in sexual fashion???

Coming on to them? Um, the loser guys arent the ones who go into those lil rooms?? Searching for it. Come on....thats pretty weak.

I remember those girls being 12-14 on that show- from what I have seen of it.
B/C youre younger I am usually more lenient with you. :p

Her response is likely indicative of the priorities of her home environment.

One thing I gotta say in her favor besides that she gives me a major stiffy is that it's difficult to answer a question like that without getting into a major diatribe about the state of american popular culture. I think these pageant girls are trained to get up there and say something positive no matter what they are given. So, the last thing she is prepared for is a question that forces her to take a critical stance. Beauty pageants themselves are premised on the culture of keeping up appearances. If you ask me, it's really a trick question. It's like asking her why this country sucks.

not quite...the men in to catch a predator are under the impression that they are hooking up with 12-14 y/o's.

Further proof that your GPA, test scores and after school activities mean absolutely nothing when it comes to intelligence. I've really got to read more.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.

how old were the youngest girls on this show? still seems a bit contradictory to me... encouraging high school girls to act like sex symbols on national tv then act like it's insane when guys suddenly start to think maybe it's ok to sleep with high school girls cos they know what they're doing.

i think maybe she rehearsed an answer that had something to do with South Africa and Iraq...and tried to use it to answer a question that had nothing to do with South Africa and Iraq.

It depends on where you are in the state. Just like any other place, if you live in an affluent area, you are more likely to have a better school system. There are some school districts in the state that are excellent, but there are also some very bad school districts. The school districts in the more rural parts of the state are more likely to have lower standardized test scores, a lower emphasis on public education, and need more funding (that they probably won't receive).
  • wait a sec...

    Yeah. A grand illustration.

    That was embarrassing.

I really don't want to slam this girl, but neither do I want to make excuses for her.

    terrible.

Maybe she was extremely nervous and had a panic attack...or something. Some people simply don't do well in a public-speaking, big audience situation.
