good to see how unbiased you are using "that pig". I don't know what's in his police report. It appeared to me that he made an effort to stop the guy and the guy clearly made an evasive maneuvor to avoid being stopped, so he was then forcibly stopped. I would hope that was written in the report. unless you have some new info that I've not seen, the cop has not been suspended....he's been put on desk duty until further investigation.
I think any "peace officer" who goes out of his way to abuse his power is a pig. While we're on the subject, I also hold traffic cops in the lowest possible regard - nothing but armed revenue agents. I think detectives, and officers who actually solve crime are amazing and should be held in the highest esteem.

Wen something is approaching you and you want it to stop you hold your hands out to indicate stop like a traffic cop. They were standing in the middle of traffic afterall.
It's a pretty universal understanding the world around.
You stand in the middle of moving traffic and wish to oppose it, you need to observe some simple rules of communication prior to exercising violence as an option in conveying yourself as a human being.
it's just that simple.

I don't know what is the police code or procedure for stopping someone. I know that in a license test, I learned what a stop sign was. roadworkers here have signs that say "stop" and "slow". I didn't see these cops holding signs, so obviously they weren't given signs to wave, but it's pretty apparent that they were there for traffic. and it's pretty clear to me that the steps the cop took from the middle of the street to in front of the guy's path indicates that he intended for the guy to stop. it's also clear to me that the guy made a maneuvor to avoid being stopped. so obviously, you and I are seeing two different things.
also, you can't see the cop's hands once the guy gets close to him and you also can't hear any words that may being said. for all we know, the cop may be saying, "stop right now" as the guy is making a move to avoid him.

The cyclist had the right of way regardless, and the police officer cut in front of him. Basically the proper procedure is to hold out one or both hands in the stop position to indicate intention. This is safe and proper procedure.
I would not have stopped for this officer either. It was totally unclear what he was doing other than to cross directly in front of oncoming traffic. Very unwise. He should be fired for stupidity as well.

so you know, for certain, that in NY City, the proper police procedure to stop traffic is to hold up your hand? and you also know that the cop wasn't giving a verbal command that the guy was choosing to ignore?

If the cop was giving verbal commands, or making any kind of attempt to tell the biker to stop, why would he have felt the need to say the guy rode into him?
Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.

Absolutely. Take a look at a traffic cop sometime.
When you're on the road and there's cyclist's and cars (and noise) everywhere and you have the right of way.... If this guy was supposed to be directing traffic flow (or sadly attempting to) as a traffic cop...he's fired. Massive failure of protocol.
