Sure, every religion has its fringe zealots. But are you not acknowledging a growing fundamentalist movement within Islam? I'm pretty sure this is the point of the post, that this incident is just another example of Muslims practicing intolerance. I mean let's just look around the world at the moment.

In Somalia, jihadists, with the support of al Qaeda, have clashed with troops loyal to the country's internationally recognized interim government and now threaten neighboring Ethiopia with all-out war.

Nearby in Darfur, Muslim militiamen called janjaweed are waging genocide against black Christian and animist villagers — apparently with the consent of the Sudanese government.

Shiite and Sunni militias, each claiming to represent true Islam, keep slaughtering each other in Iraq.

Hezbollah ("Party of God") seeks to destroy democracy in Lebanon by provoking Israel, which it is sworn to eliminate.

On the West Bank, Hamas and Fatah have taken a timeout from their attacks on Israel to murder each other and innocent bystanders.

The Iranian Shiite theocracy — when not hosting Holocaust deniers or sending terrorists into Iraq — issues serial pledges to finish off Israel.

The shaky Pakistani leadership pleads that it can neither target Osama bin Laden nor stop Taliban jihadists hiding out in the remote regions of Pakistan from streaming back into Afghanistan.

In Europe, opera producers, novelists, cartoonists and filmmakers are increasingly circumspect out of fear of death threats from Islamists.

All of the above violence and intolerance has one thing in common - at least one if not both sides are envoking their religion for their actions. I can't think of another religion that is currently involved in these types of problems, can you?

    Great post i agree 100%...

Yes, still very very small part, though, but as I see a growing movement within Islam, I also see more fanatic Christians, more zealots and more intolerence from it.

Okay, so the percentage of Muslims who are envoking their religion as justification for the carnage and instability they are sowing is relatively small compared to the total number of followers.

But are numbers the benchmark by which we assess the significance of radical Islam, or at least irresponsible Islam?

Muslim militias are threatening the governments of soverign nations and legitimate governments. Muslim militias are taking part in genocide in Darfur and Iraq.

Are these actions to be compared or lumped together with Christian zealots as you try to do? Is it so hard to recognize that no other religion on earth currently has the disfunction, militancy and hostility as Islam???

The Iranian theocracy is a zealot. How do you know what the majority of the country feels? You're just showing christian intolerance by generalizing about muslims. Look in the mirror.

It is a very small number, and I agree with you on this. But just want to make clear that it's a very small percentage because people seem to think it's the majority of Islam.

I disagree, yes it is hard to do because I don't think any religion is militant or hostile. I think there are extremists that shouldn't be lumped together with the 'normal' believers. It would be like asking if you knew any other religion that has such a history of child molesters as Christianity.
I think both statements are equally ridiculous, I think if you call Islam a religion of violence, it's apt to call Christianity a religion of paedophiles or a religion of intolerant rednecks...

LOL, Christian intolerance? How do you even know I'm a Christain? Did I claim to know what the majority of citizens in Iran want or how they feel about Islam? Did I even say anything about the citizens at all?

No, I didn't. I commented on the GOVERNMENT, which is indeed a theocracy. And everything I said about them is undisbutable truth. The government does sponsor and host Holocaust deniers, including their head of state. They do send terrorists into Iraq. And they do issue pledges all the time to destroy Israel.

Shouldn't Mercury be held in high esteem from these people. Almost prophet like after he predicted in a song "the hammer to fall" and the Soviet Union did. If that don't mean pedestal treatment???????
You've changed your place in this world!

SUMMARY: A 60th birthday gala for the late gay rocker Freddie Mercury in his native Zanzibar is canceled after outraged Muslims threaten to disrupt it.

A 60th birthday gala for the late gay rock star Freddie Mercury was canceled Thursday on the east African island of Zanzibar, where Mercury was born, after outraged Muslims threatened to disrupt it, Agence France Presse reported.

On Wednesday, organizers said they would continue with the planned Sept. 2 event despite fierce opposition from Islamists, who said the lifestyle of Queen's flamboyant lead singer was offensive to many on the overwhelmingly Muslim archipelago. Organizers said Thursday they have no choice but to call it off.

"We have decided to cancel the party after misleading and erroneous information was spread about it," said organizer Simai Mohamed Saidi, who runs a Freddie Mercury theme restaurant in the capital.

"I urge Muslim groups in the future to seek correct information from us instead of relying on rumors," he said in an open letter, adding the event was intended to honor Mercury, who died of AIDS in 1991. Saidi lamented that the cancellation would hurt his intention to use the party to raise money for HIV/AIDS victims on Zanzibar.

Zanzibar, a semiautonomous region of Tanzania, criminalized gay and lesbian sex in 2004, but remains a popular resort destination for South African gays.

Conservative Zanzibari Islamists last week demanded that authorities ban the party and then vowed to stage mass demonstrations if it went ahead, saying it would tarnish the islands' reputation and culture and promote homosexuality.

"We were ready to join forces against the party because we had information that a number of gays from abroad had come to take part," Sheikh Azzan Hamdani of the association for Islamic Mobilization and Propagation, told AFP. "We had also written letters to the tourist commission and the owner of the Mercury restaurant, demanding that they stop the party."

Authorities, who have long tiptoed between the demands of a booming tourist industry and the wishes of conservative Muslims, never formally responded to Islamists, AFP reported. But Zanzibar's information ministry this week ordered local state-run media not to give the event any coverage.

Few on Zanzibar are aware of Queen or Freddie Mercury, who was born Farrokh Bulsara on the main island of Unguja to ethnic Persian parents on September 5, 1946.

But the appearance of posters advertising the beach party to celebrate what would have been his 60th birthday in recent weeks prompted the Islamist complaints.

Although he was educated in India and moved with his family to Britain in 1964, Mercury remains Zanzibar's most famous son to many Westerners and rock music fans.

You don't fuck with Freddie Mercury.

Reason #335 I hate the Islamic faith ;)

Would you also be up in arms if some Christians protested cradle of filth playing in Hicksville, Alabama? Each to their own if you ask me.

Rosie? Is that you? "Radical Christianity is just as big of a threat as radical Islam"? How's life after Elizabeth kicked your ass on national TV?

There's a difference. The Christians won't behead anyone.

    FYI, I'm not a Christian.

Way to dig up an old as hell thread...
