of course you can count ribs....you can count ribs on a 4 lb baby born under otherwise normal circumstances. Hey Prism...could you count ribs?

I give up. I'm obviously outnumbered and I'm tired of making the same points over-and-over.

Sleep better, Georgia...2 cold-hearted killers are safely tucked behind bars and your tax dollars are going to feed them for the rest of their lives.

I don't mean to belabor the point but do you realize how small a 4lb baby really is?

My son was six weeks early and he was 4lb, 4oz.

He was kept in the hospital for two weeks because they thought he was too small to go home AND HE WAS!! His head was about the size of an orange and his legs and arms were so thin it looked painful. They kept him to make sure he gained enough weight to be able to go home.

i wasnt breast fed either... i wasnt saying it is the only healthy option. i was just saying that breast feeding is clearly a natural and healthy way to provide for a child.

i was figuring a vegan couple would look in this direction if trying to live a natural healthy lifestyle.

I wasn't breastfed either and yet my brother was. I always knew they loved him better!
lol, I actually was disappointed with my mother when I found out she didn't breastfeed me, especially when I became a mother myself.
I really screwed that up. I really Schruted it.

actually I never let my kids go hungry so they were always fed and hydrated enough that i couldn't count their ribs even though they were tiny. the easiest way to tell if they were gaining was to look at their arms and legs

I guess the health care professionals and doctors who examined the child first hand really don't know what they are doing and should be fired. As well...all the media outlets are lying just to jail two vegans.

    yeah...it's a conspiracy.

The hospital was ACROSS THE STREET?! Holy shit, these are two of the dumbest people ever, I'm surprised they've managed to keep themselves alive for 30 years, much less a helpless infant.

I don't know if they deliberately starved this baby or if they're just criminally stupid. I don't think they're a danger to society at large, so life imprisonment seems like overdoing it, but they both ought to be sterilized. Anyone too moronic to read one single book or ask a single doctor a question or two should NEVER be allowed to have children.

My brother was 4 lbs, 8 oz, and he came home 48 hours after birth.

We didn't have health insurance so he didn't go back to the doc until he had to... he almost choked to death on his own spit-up and my parents had to call an ambulance. While in the hospital his low weight was noted... mom was breastfeeding and it wasn't enough. She was breastfeeding because we couldn't afford formula... we were even using cloth diapers to save money.

she was doing what she could with my brother and thankfully, he lived. This poor kid died.

were his parents dumb? I don't know. Did they make horrible mistakes? yes. Should they be locked up for life? I'm not sure but my first instinct is no. If they knew what they were doing and purposely starved their son so they wouldn't have to deal with him anymore then YES, absolutely. If they thought they were doing everything right and the little guy died..no, they shouldn't be locked up forever.
  • Well for one thing...is it common to get a life sentence for this, or was it a bad lawyers/being poor and black thing.

Does seem harsh. I mean it is their child after all not someone else's.

many, many have gotten far less for all out murder with weapons..

I just opened my fridge and took out the container of soy-milk in there and right there above the ingrediants and the nutrition info in bold orange lettering it reads: "NOT TO BE USED AS AN INFANT FORMULA"

true, it was their child. And I'm all for abortion, as long as I have the right to choose over 18 years.

yet being the dummy that i am i was still able to figure out that it means that it's NOT TO BE USED AS AN INFANT FORMULA.

one has to wonder how much clearer can it possibly get?

Oh I wasn't implying...who reads the entire soy milk carton...I sure don't aside from making sure it's organic.

It is interesting they put that on there though. Someone sued them before obviously..it costs them $$ in ink.

It must be a US/Canada thing. No law suits up here yet for that it seems.

Wow, I feel pretty bad for these parents. They seem to be very uneducated about how much to feed a newborn and they never went to a pediatrician?!!!
That just really shocks me. And you don't feed a newborn milk (any kind for that matter, other than breast milk!); apple juice is only to be given in very small quantities and sporadically. Formula, why weren't the couple feeding him soy-based Formula?!

My first thoughts after reading this post was why are they pointing out the fact that the parents were Vegan. Lots of parents in this country starve their children to death and the headlines don't say "meat eating parents kill their child." But then I realize that at least part of the vegan parents' defense was that they were vegans, they fed the baby a vegan diet, and the vegan diet killed the child. This was not a good defense - obviously. First of all, we don't know all of the facts, but they could have just not fed the baby enough food at all - not to mention the fact that he wasn't fed a diet necessary for a healthy infant. There was something wrong with this story, and as pointed out previously it was either intentional murder, reckless disregard, or negligence. On the face of things it would seem to be more of reckless disregard. It seem they were more than negligent, but intentional murder seems a bit far fetched too. In any case, life in prison does seem harsh even though there is no excuse for what they did.

Starvation doesn't occur in a matter of minutes like drowning in a pool. It takes a while and the baby had to have looked really bad. What about other family members? Where were they? What about neighbors? What about friends? Were these people totally secluded from the world?

what if they didn't see a Dr.?

if they did... why isn't the doc in trouble, too? Surely the kid would have shown signs of malnutrition before death.

A very valid point, perhaps there will be wrongful death case out of this by the child's grandparents or perhaps even the parents. I guess there are people who do not go to doctors. But it still does not take away that they were old enough to know that what they were doing was wrong. Even if they read books, they would say breast or formula. For example, the baby book by dr sears, even acknowledges vegans. There are tons of books out there if they did not have internet access to the vegan culture. It just doesn't make sense that it went as far as it did.
