Does anyone know what the baby weighed at birth? Was he ever taken to a Dr.?
3 1/2lbs is TINY but if his birth weight was 5 lbs, the parents probably didn't noticed the decrease in weight.
Maybe the parents really didn't know that anything was wrong and now they are going to rot in prison forever.
a very sad situation, all around...
but the thing is with a baby that say was only 5 pounds at birth you can tell just by looking at them if they gain or lose even just a few ounces. one of my kids was 3lbs even and the other was 31/2 lbs. when she was born and everytime they lost or gained even an ounce or two you could tell by looking at them up until they were about 10 to 12lbs.
you can not tell me that these parents couldn't tell that their newborn was losing weight. and I certainly can't understand why this baby wasn't being breastfed....not to mention there's lots of different soy-based baby formulas they could have fed the kid that wouldn't have interfered with their vegan ways
Wow. The baby died on my little guy's birthday. Yeah so why not breast feed? My doctor asked me if I was a veggie or not, just to determine what the baby needed before I had him, after I had him, his 2 week appointment etc etc etc....How about talking to doctors clearly pointing out that you are vegans. This could had been avoided. It's just so sad.
i believe the sentence is mandatory for the offense, at least the article presents it that way. So the judges hands were tied.
Yes life is mandatory for those 4 offenses, but the judge only had to give them one: manslaughter. If he had so chosen, then he could have given them a lesser sentence, probably between 15-30 years.

I assume your ultra-tiny kids were in the hospital at birth? Most likely in intensive care? It doesn't surprise me that you would notice such a thing when your mind was in a "life or death" state. My brother was a premie (4 1/2lbs) and he had weight issues.... I couldn't tell when he had lost a pound because he was rediculously tiny to begin with.
Plenty of kids aren't breastfed and I don't see why that is an issue here. If the parents were feeding him a soy-based formula and thought that everything was fine and dandy... this was nothing more than a big "oops".
Of course it's horrible that a baby died but if they were doing what they truly thought was the right thing... I don't see why they should spend the rest of their lives in prison.
Has anyone looked for another article?
DOes anyone know if the parents had concerns and asked friends and relatives... maybe everyone said "oh, he's fine! all babies lose a little weight after birth". Which I believe is true...most babies actually lose a little weight.
One dumb-ass MSN article and most people say "lock them up and throw away the key". If they truly starved their kid, I agree. If they didn't, it's a shame that they are being locked up for life.

we don't know what her pre-natal or post-natal care was.
Well, the article said "soy milk and apple juice." I have to assume that's correct. Apple juice for an infant?! Soy milk? Soy milk and soy-based formula are two completely different things. That's where the issue of "why didn't she breastfeed?" comes up. If she had breastfed, the baby would have received all the nutrition it needed, even if it depleted the mother of hers. Maybe life in prison is an extreme sentence, but we weren't in the courtroom and don't know all the details.

both of them came home from the NICU at 4 1/2 lbs and like i said i could tell by looking at them if they had gained or lost even an ounce or two up until they were about 10 to 12 lbs...it's called "paying attention your child"
but they weren't feeding him a soy-based fomula they were feeding him only soy-milk and apple juice...there's huge difference
yes every baby loses a few ounces of fluid weight in the first week or two...at six weeks a child should be gaining weight if not merely holding steady....they definately should not still be losing weight.
was this child ever even seen by a Doctor? if not that's definately neglect on the parents part

exactly, we don't know the details. My point all along.
and apple juice is nothing... my nana gave everyone Brandy at night. (and she also had a baby die at 6 weeks from possible malnutrition)
Maybe. Just maybe...if these parents could do it all over again, they would do it differently. ??? We'll never know...
If they were feeding the kid what they said...juice and soy...and it kept it down...it would have survived.
They weren't feeding the child. The child didn't die from symptoms of mal-nourishment....It flat out starved to death.
They got life in prison.

it's recommend that babies not be given apple juice until around 6 months....at 6 weeks their system can't handle fruit juice yet. if they had read any single book about baby-care they would have known this.

Plenty of parents don't take their children in for well-being check ups. (or dental visits for that matter) because they can't afford it. The woman gave birth at home! Was it what she wanted or was it because she didn't have insurance? another question we don't know the answer to...
These people were 30 years old! If they were so stupid as to let their baby waste away to nothing over six weeks then the punishment must have fit the crime. Apple juice and soy milk? What the hell? Even I (a crack-whore waitress with 3 different babies by 3 different daddies - to semi-quote SPEEDY MCCREADY) breastfed my kids til they were 13 months old and they were all healthy.

not a valid excuse. most local health departments will do well baby check-ups for sliding-scale or free depending on the parents income. I used to have a neighbor that would take her kids to the health department for their check-up everytime she squirted out another baby

wow. Google the phrase "apple juice infant" and here's the first thing that comes up:
Relieving Constipation in Babies Younger than 4 Months:
Try giving one to two ounces of diluted fruit juice such as grape, prune or apple-prune twice daily.
I understand when you say "it's recommended" but if you're not asking for recommendations, you probably don't notice that stuff.

I think with breast feeding comes in a helps out with the strict guidelines of being vegan. The mother could had clearly controlled the baby's diet with what she already has in her. I agree breast feeding isn't for everyone. But at the 2 week appt, the doctors should had stepped in. It would had been determined then that the baby was not developing correctly. And yes babies loose some weight but it shouldn't be more than a few ounces, maybe 1 pound before the doctors step in a help out. Being vegan does not allow them to be completely clueless when caring for their child. There people were not like 16 years old. They are 27 and 31. They are old enough to know better. They deserve the sentence as far as I am concerned.

you could tell by looking at them because you had it in your mind to begin with that they were under-weight. You knew better. They were in an ICU and the entire staff was concerned. You probably lost sleep worrying about your babies.
If you had given birth at home to a 5 lb baby (and who knows what the birth-weight was in this case, It could've been less), you might not have noticed the drop in weight... you might have thought that everything was normal and that you were doing everything right....and now you're going to prison for life...

I think the fact that they had the baby at home and didn't take it to the doctor when it was that small to begin with is significant. It sounds like they weren't quite on the ball with the birth even. And if you read the original post, it says the issue wasn't whether they were vegan or not, it was that they DIDN'T FEED it enough.

Here's another article... after reading this, I still believe that they were charged appropriately.
From the birth to six weeks, even at the point where you could "count his bones through his skin", they didn't take him to a doctor is despicable... once again, screw them.
Strict vegans guilty of murder after their baby starves to death
Tim Reid in Washington
A vegan couple were sentenced to life in jail yesterday for the murder of their malnourished six-week-old son, who weighed just 3½lb (1.6kg) when he died.
Jade Sanders and Lamont Thomas fed the boy, who was named Crown Shakur, a diet largely consisting of soy milk and apple juice, the Atlanta court heard.
The child was born in a bath-tub in the couple’s home and never taken to see a doctor. He was dead when his parents took him to a hospital across the street from their flat on April 25, 2004. He was so emaciated that doctors could count his bones through his skin.
The couple maintained during the trial that they did the best they could for the boy while adhering to their vegan lifestyle, a strict form of vegetarianism that does not allow the consumption or use of any products linked to animals.
“We’re vegetarians,” 31-year-old Thomas said. “We are against animal cruelty, so why would I be cruel to my son? Why would I do something with his body? We are against animals being murdered, why would we be cruel to him and try to do something to his body? The fact that we named him Crown, we were proud of him. We weren’t trying to kill my son.”
But prosecutors convinced the jury that the couple intentionally neglected and underfed the child and then tried to use the lifestyle as a shield for their actions.
“The vegan diet is fine,” Chuck Boring, a prosecutor, told the jury. “These parents lied about what they fed him. He just was not fed enough. They’re not vegans. They’re baby killers. Think about how long they had to listen to his screams and hollers.”
Thomas, the father, hung his head and almost collapsed when he and his wife were convicted on May 2. They were found guilty of malice murder, felony murder, involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children.
Sanders, 27, told police that she fed the baby organic apple juice and soy milk, supplemented by breast milk. But containers found in their flat clearly stated that soy milk was not to be used as a substitute for baby formula.
Their lawyer, Brandon Lewis, said he believed that they unintentionally starved their child because the apple juice worked as a diuretic and blocked the absorbtion of nutrients from the soy milk. He said they never took their son to a doctor because they feared hospitals were infested with germs.
Only two other similar cases have reached court in the US. A New York jury also convicted a vegan couple of murder, but a Florida jury found another couple guilty only of involuntary manslaughter and unintentional death. In that case, the couple had successfully raised two children as vegans, but their third child died. http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Top_News/2007/05/09/vegan_couple_gets_life_for_childs_death/

well if you consider that the average baby in this country weighs 7 1/2 to 8 pounds...this baby weighted 3 1/2 pounds when it died. even if this kid was only 5 pounds at birth you still can't not notice that the child was losing alot of weight unless you have your head completely and totally up your ass

i wasnt breast fed either... i wasnt saying it is the only healthy option. i was just saying that breast feeding is clearly a natural and healthy way to provide for a child.
i was figuring a vegan couple would look in this direction if trying to live a natural healthy lifestyle.
