I've been re reading this thread and it's apparent that you really have no idea what you've been talking about. Aside from being clueless on matters of history, politics, economy and social structure, you are twist of contradictions.
In one post you're all "for a mandated day off, because the country is work obsessed."
Then in this other when you pretend to some intellect you talk, in very confused ways, of Nazi power grabbing. And continue the incoherence with lots of ideas you found that you don't quite grasp.
You also missed the fact that I said on a European 'model'. Not government program. You want the mandates, I do not.
And then, lastly, young Unifiedscene, I am not here to be courteous to you.
I don't suffer fools very well.
Must be very difficult carrying the weight of your superiority everywhere with you. My sympathies.
I was simply musing out loud that this country is obsessed with work. There are a number of studies documenting that Americans work more hours and take fewer vacations than almost anywhere else. In theory, it would be a good thing for people to slow down and smell the roses now and again. Thus why I was enjoying the thought of a national day of rest, even if it truly is not the solution to the problem. I was not completely serious in suggesting that it is a good idea. It was simply a vehicle to advance the idea that Americans are workaholics and we ought to be aware of it and consider doing something about it. I believe it's called brainstorming solutions or some other obscure term you may have missed after you dropped out.
I was confused by the way you brought up European work restrictions, as it seemed you thought those were a good thing. That seemed like a contradiction to me to say that the European work restrictions were good, but similar laws in the US were a terrible abuse of freedom in the US. It didn't make sense. I misread you, as you were not advocating European style work-restrictions. My apologies for that. The "Nazi power grab" you seem so fixated upon was simply part of my asking you to explain why one was an acceptable restriction and the other was government overreaching.
But I stand by my rant about workaholism in the US and about the whole "if you want a day off, take one" myth. The fact is that in America workers don't have much power to stand up to employers. I'll see if I can dig up that study I referred to... Americans don't take vacation time because they are afraid of the consequences from their employers. My point was that if American workers are afraid even to take vacation time offered to them by employers, then it's pretty clear who has the power. They may not be indentured servants, but their options and freedom are pretty limited. And as someone else suggested, I truly believe this to be the root of our social decay. When we work so many hours just to keep our heads above water, how can we hope to spend time keeping our families together?

Try not to buy into too much of your own bullshit, kid. You weren't 'merely musing' anything nor 'thus' anything else. You're fulla shit and trying to cover your tracks. Better luck next time.

I've really gotten under your skin, haven't I? You always get this hot and bothered when people don't roll over for you on internet forums? What say you and I talk about the points I raised about Americans working too much and having little or no say with respect to conditions of their employment and what we could potentially do to address that? Or you could carry on with the condescending and self-righteous insults. I do understand their appeal though... it is much easier to just call someone a "kid" and say they are full of bullshit than it is to actually advance any arguments or reasoning of your own. That might expose your lack of substance and all. For someone with absolutely nothing to say on this subject so far, you sure do post a lot.

My conversation had been with someone else. You've done nothing but misread, mist quote and misunderstand. You're not worth trying to talk to.
Like I said, better luck next time.

Didn't realize I was intruding on a private conversation, seeing as how it's a public message board devoted to open debate and all. I misread one thing that piqued my curiosity and asked for clarification. Now that that one thing has been cleared up, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the related subjects raised. But suit yourself. I wouldn't want to get sucked into a real substantive debate in which I was clearly had nothing intelligent to say either. Far better to toss insults and then act like it's beneath you to back them up, irony be damned.
Back to the subject..Does everyone agree that it was in fact the Catholics who felt superior to God and changed the true Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday? I thought God's laws couldn't be changed? Why is the 4th commandment the ONLY ONE God said REMEMBER????
I knew all the rules, but the rules did not know me...GUARANTEED!

Brilliant logic there. The Catholics are horrible for twisting the Bible, meanwhile you adopt the view that you really only have to remember one of the commandments... the least important one. I thought this kind of anti-Catholic redneck rhetoric waned in the 60s when the KKK went out of vogue.

besides, interesting premise....that catholics felt 'superior to god'....hmmmm, really? WHO is to say what day god deemed as the sabbath, and honestly...does it really matter? as long as A day, once a week...is set aside as a day of rest, reflection, prayer...honoring god, isn't that the point? and believe me, i find plenty of 'fault' within the catholic church, however 'blaming' catholics for the sabbath being 'switched' to sundays rather than saturdays is a bit ridiculous, no? don't MOST practicing christians honor the sabbath on sundays nowadays? why would they go along with what catholics deemed? seems a silly arguement. there is plenty to 'blame' on religion of all forms, on christians, on catholics...but this? reaching and needlessly divisive.

I remember hearing the argument that a 'day' to god could be hundreds of years to us. So the earth wasn't created in 7 days, but in thousands of years or something. I think I like that version. I'm having my 'day' of rest the next few hundred years! See ya!

"Saturday, Donny, is Shabbos, the Jewish day of rest. That means that I don't work, I don't get in a car, I don't fucking ride in a car, I don't pick up the phone, I don't turn on the oven, and I sure as shit DON'T FUCKING ROLL! Shomer Shabbos!"

Exactly. The Catholic Church gives plenty of ammunition for criticism. This isn't one of them.

No, I don't. This is an institution that has been sheltering and protecting pedophiles for years. If your big complaint is that 2000 years ago they decided to make the day of rest a Sunday for political reasons, a change which almost every branch of Christianity (not just the Catholic Church) has adopted, then I'd say maybe you don't get it. Besides, I'm pretty sure they weren't using a Gregorian calendar when Exodus was written, so how do you truly know the Sabbath was Saturday, a day that hadn't even been "invented" when the 10 commandments were issued?
But perhaps you can explain to us why Saturday vs. Sunday is such a huge deal. I'm obviously missing something. I can see why you'd be upset about any laws that would get in the way of your religious practices, but to hate on the Catholic Church over using a different day is kind of weird. I believe the commandment is to keep holy the Sabbath day... not keep holy Saturday.

Chapter 7 & 8 ..I am entitled to my own beliefs, and thank GOD I still have that right in this country!

I'm not much for doctrine or the Bible, so it still seems pretty silly to me. No more silly than any other Christian tenet though I suppose. Had no idea people took this one so literally and seriously, thanks for the link!

this is what is wrong with organize religion!!! always fighting about this rule or that thought when the GOLDEN RULE is the most important one.
and I don't think it matters what day you set aside.

I agree, but it makes sense when you believe that the bible is the word of god, like literally his word, that the 'less important' rules matter as well, whether you are part of an organised religion or not.
