:) I'm not so good at art, but I really enjoy it. Problem is I rarely finish anything!!!! I always feel guilty, like I should be doing something else, but I'm about to start a new artwork tonight! I'm going to make a sculputure out of rolled up newspaper, ever seen van gogh's sorrow (I think that is waht it is called)? It is a drawing of a woman sitting with her head on her knees. Well I am going to attempt to do a life size version of that. will proabably take a few months (that is if I end up finishing it!!!). I did a similar life size sculpture the same way when I was in highschool.

I've noticed a lot of people on here use photo bucket. Is that free? if so how do I join? If I can figure it out I will post a picture of what I am talking about.

    Good luck to you.

Thanks for all the comments. I plan on working on something tonight. :D

i did a lifesize sculpture with plaster and casting in high school. it was of a friend sitting almost in the same position you were discussing. i was to the face, which i did seperately, b/c i was going to attach it as a mask, sorta like the phantom of the opera. the body of the damn thing ended up collapsing while drying b/c i did not get the outer 'crust' thick enough nor did i stuff it well enough. you learn from your mistakes. i was cut for time after that and had to do a solid plaster bust instead. we still entered the collapsed faceless body into the art show. it was very abstract, but worked. i liked riding around with it in my car (for some stupid reason)

    keep pushing myself.

  • Anduril, if you don't mind me saying so, your unfinished piece in your first post is your best. at least it is my favourite. i love it!

as someone else mentioned, you can't force a painting or drawing finished...well sometimes it's forced OUT of you, if you know what i mean...just wait and it always comes back. you'll always figure out how to finish something when you least expect it. i know the feeling of feeling frustrated with a piece, not having finished it...sometimes i start out with a vision and never reach it because the unfinished piece becomes better than what i'd had planned for.
i have a place i go and sit on a bench overlooking the ocean sometimes and i have about a couple of thousand tunes on my computer...that usually gets me motivated to do some work, especially neil young.

anyway, you have some great stuff...just wanted to let you know. slainte!
  • worked on the shading on this piece for over 4 hours today. the pic def shows i need to get it darker but looking closely at the photo, you can see there is more detail than just glancing at it so i tried to emphasize that. i am thinking about making it darker like the pic. we'll see. i'll prob spend another 4+ hours just on the hair. face will be last of course.

i'll try to finish it tomorrow. :D

actually, a year later and i can say i have not touched this piece or any other, nor have i began new projects. i look at this one from time to time, and it's almost as if i dont want to finish it for fear it wont be perfect. i try to stay focused but it is so difficult with the detail. i signed in to the pit, (another thing i have not done lately) to read this post hoping it will help.

the other part is i'm 27 and already had surgery on both wrists for carpel tunnel 2 years ago, so i also get a lot of pain from drawing - still and it makes me feel a bit inadequate. i think that is most of my problem.

enough of my whining - happy friday b/c i'm off work!

thanks for all the wonderful comments! :)

Even though it's an entirely different setting, I know all about finding motivation to finish something ... and the fear it won't be perfect. I'm still trying to find the motivation to finish my final thesis. I hope we'll both find it somehow ... Good luck!
