East Harlem/New York Question

Hi,
I am travelling to NY to see PJ.
I stay at Virginia´s Guesthouse in East Harlem, 128 E 112 Street.
Not very near to MSG but very cheap and the subway only two blocks away.

Would you call it a safe area? There may be safer places, but I hope it is not that bad...
THANKS for an answer!

I hope my concert poster will be fine, too (if I get one at the shows).

Dude, why is god's name would you stay there! Not only is it a long subway ride. You might get shot on the way.

I don't know what they're saying. Harlem is not the Harlem of old, that's for sure. And at 112th on the east side right by the subway? Not bad.
I am currently at 125th all day at a psychiatric outpatient clinic, so I deal with the worst and live in one of the worst of all of New York City (Bed-Stuy).

All in all you'll be fine!

  • if you're going to stay on 112th street, try the west side. that's morningside heights, near columbia university and a direct subway trip to MSG.

Xavier has a point, if you can get something on the west side, do it. Having to go crosstown on public transportation can get annoying, especially at rush hour.

West Harlem certainly is better, but to tell the guy he needs to bring a gun is not true.

Because the guesthouse has a good feedback (many others do not have!).
I did not know it is that bad.
And it is at the beginning of Harlem, 112 Street; not at the center...
And only two blocks away from the subway- but I have to run fast when I get back from the concerts.

That area I believe is known as Spanish Harlem, because of it's population of first Puerto Rican now Dominican residents. For Manhattan my recommendation is to avoid staying anywhere near 125th Street, or anywhere North.

E 112th is totally fine, NYC is the safest it's been in ages...

that being said, if you can find something on the west side you're def better off; this way you won't have to transfer trains or anything to cross town.

It's not that bad - you'll be fine. Just keep your sneakers tied in case you have to break for it.

And the subway ride is a layup - take the 6 (the local train) to 33rd Street (you can also hop to the express to try to speed things up) and he walk to MSG in the summer is a treat. Plenty of things going to to keep yourself entertained.

    Thanks,
I do not have to go crosstown, I take the green subway to 33th Street.
And from there it is a 10 minutes walk to MSG.

Grossly untrue. Anything on 125th west of the equivalenth of seventh avenue is perfectly fine. Unless you are a raging racist and it just bothers you to see people with a skin color different from yours. And of course the Inwood area is a great place. Having said this, it does get sketchy on the East side. My brother once took the metro north at the 125th stop on a Sunday and he did not feel comfortable (and later was told not to go there again by someone who works in the area).

Having said this, the area of the guest house is not pleasant. The good reviews could be a sign that it's not too bad, but you'll go out at night. If at all possible, I would try to priceline something in a better area. There are two hostels right by where I live on west 107th and broadway (westside inn and morningside inn). You may want to check those. MUch much better in terms of transportation to msg too.
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.

You remember the Iraq war decision?

I would support Obama, too (like most of the Germans).

    I predict two scenerios:

    1. The weather is nice and criminals are more than happy to go outside....in this case you will be stabbed.

    2. It is cool and rainy, ergo the fatal wound would be administered via gunshot from a moving vehicle with a "lower on the totem pole" member coming to the body to collect valuables.

    Good luck!
There's Pearl Jam, The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Robert Johnson......and then everybody else.
  • I live on 135th street. Harlem is pretty safe nowadays. The neighborhood is changing and I notice more people of different backgrounds moving here. I've never had a problem or felt unsafe. That being said whenever I am on the east side I do feel like I have to be more cafefull. If there are hotels comparibly priced on the west side I would go with that option. There are a lot of great and inexpensive african resturants and soul food places esp on the west side.

I wonder if some of the folks making comments have actually been in the neighborhood recently. Bill Clinton has had his office here in Harlem for years now and even Bill O'Reilly goes out to eat in the neighborhood resturants.

I disagree, I found East Harlem to be sketchy the last time I was up there, and that was during the day.
I wouldn't stay that far uptown, especially being from out of town.

I got tickets to 7 or the 8 shows I wanted to see. I didn't get MSG 1.

I live in the East Village, a 20 minute subway ride from MSG and arguably the best neighborhood in the city. You and a friend can crash with me for 2 nights after the MSG shows in return for selling me a pair of 10c tickets to MSG 1 at face value.

    Interested?
josh@bustedtees.com (please include the 10c number if the tickets I would get)

    THANKS!
