At least in my mind, I've always saw those lyrics more as a case of Lament... it doesn't sound like the man is selfish, only that he wishes being a part of his life could have make her happy...

Maybe a little bit of selfishness, but as others have said, that is love. We stay in relationships (at least healthy ones) because of what we get out of them (i.e. how they make us feel etc.). Of course we also give, or our partner isn't going to stay in them because they are getting anything out of them.

I wouldn't say it is a selfish song. He may want something...but wanting something and being selfish are two different things.
I think selfish would be...I want it and nobody else is going to have it even if I can't.
It seems the way the song is written that he is expressing that she will move on and he knows someone else will have her.
Regarding the Sun/Star quesion...our sun is a star. So not sure how much it would change ones interpretation of the song.
