stones recent stuff is crap...

okay, take it easy on me, just need to share my opinion here. all stones recent stuff with barb ireland, and the saturday knights is terrible!!! i know alot of people on here have expressed they like it alot, which is fine obviously, but is anyone else with me here that i find it terrible?! first off let me say, that its all artistic and that if stone likes it and enjoys it, and finds it an "escape" from pearl jam, thats all that matters, but i find it "not appealing" to say the least. stones input to pearl jam is probably underrated. he has written the music to ALOT of their great songs, but tends to get over shadowed by ed. and definately gets over shadowed live by mike.. look at who has penned alot of the great songs by them, and you'll see stones name. but all this solo stuff is terrible, and i hope he still has some great "rock n roll" left in him. my fear is that he's starting to mello out as he gets a little older, and this solo stuff is a sign of that. im probably over reacting, but i just get a little nervous when i hear stufff like this.. lol i still want rock n roll from these guys, not this crap!!!!! just my opinion on a pointless topic. by the way, stone is my favorite guitar player in the band. very unique style.

To each his own but I agree......
His recent solo stuff is still better than "Bayleaf" imo.....

I don´t care too much for the solo work from Matt/Jeff either,
ITW is a great album though......

Luckily Stone kicks ass in PJ.......and he will continue doing that :)

Why should anyone cut you any slack if you don't "take it easy" on Stone?

I can't understand what you are trying to achieve by posting such a loathsome thread.

Not exactly my cup of tea either, but as artists I respect their need to try and branch out and try different things - Who would have thought when listening to Ed's angst filled music in the early 90s that he counted Crowed House and James Taylor as musical influences? My point? I dunno - just that these guys are extremely talented and probably want to do something different every now and then for the sake of just doing something different. I don't think its indicative of a complete change in music/style that we will see from Stoney in the future - he'll still be our boy rocking out for years with PJ to come. I just give the guy credit for having the guts to put his new music out there.

    Peace.
  • short version

i like his new stuff...definitely don't love it and definitely understand why some people can't handle it

bayleaf was exponentially better than any of it

maybe him getting this music out of his system will be beneficial for the next pj record

don't call anything stone does crap, stone is the fuckin man

Have some class? This is a message board, not all of the posts can be gleaming with positivity or worded with class. Give the guy a break, I'm sure there aren't a ton of people he personally knows that even care about this album (I am assuming this). Where else is he gonna talk about it?

I have a dinner next weekend that requires a tie and coat, I'll get plenty of class there. I don't always want it on the PJ message board

So if I was at your dinner, and the food wasnt all that great, and I walked up to you and told you I thought it was crap, you wouldnt in the least bit be offended? Sure you would...

But me...Having cooth and tact and just being an overall "classy" kind of guy, wouldnt approach the host and say such a thing even if I REALLY thought it. I would just prob keep it to myslef instead of calling you out in front of people....THAT my friend is called having CLASS.....

You dont come to the HOSTS website and call their stuff crap.......Just shows no CLASS...imho

Do I need to make it any clearer for you? Just because it is a message board, doesnt mean people shouldnt use good judgement...Not only that, it is PJ site....You didn think some of us would defend Stone? Enjoy your party! ;)

definitely. It may not be your cup of tea, but it's certainly not crap. If you think that's crap, you need to expand what you're listening to. Not everything needs to be balls to the wall rock-n-roll.

Oh no, some lighter acoustic music! Duck and cover everyone!

I wasnt comparing the message board or his quote to the party I have to go to. I was simply saying that this is where you talk about PJ related topics both positive and negative. The word crap isnt even that offensive. Maybe if he said it didn't meet his musical standards it would have been easier for you to take.

Comments like "THAT my friend is called having CLASS" are really classy themselves.
  • I listened a little bit (I guess 1 min) Stone´s new songs...But I have to say that "Your Flame" song is one of the most beautiful songs I ever listened...The video is nice, it shows how much he´s enjoying doing his music at his own way...As someone said above, not everything have to be hard rock and roll all the time...
    Keep going Stone :)

Didn't listen to any of the Stone's stuff (just heard of song from Brad). The line "this is not for you" certainly applies to me here.

But how can you not care for Jeff's and Matt's solo work? Jeff's Tone kicks ass and what about Wellwater Conspiracy (if you can call it Matt's solo work). He rocks there as he pretty much does everywhere else he plays.

i like his version of 1999!

i've listened to the other stuff but it's not sticking.

it's different from bayleaf. i love bayleaf but it took a while to grow on me. to me, the funny thing about stones musical influences is that whenever i read what he's listening to at that time - in the past he has mentioned missy elliott, rufus wainwright, elliott smith - it's always the same as what i'm listening to most at that same time. currently he appears to be digging hank williams. and i have to admit that i have been listening to a lot of hank over the past couple of years. it's just a weird thing. i'm sure it's not relevant to this thread at all... although to make it relevant, just because stone's into hank right now, too, doesn't make his most recent tunes sound any better, to me.

    thats all.

I was actually a little surprised to find out that Stone just recently got into Hank Williams. Hank's one of those guys that appeals to almost everyone that likes good music, not just country fans. I really don't like country (not even Johnny Cash!) but Hank Williams wrote some amazing music.

Cant say I go for the Barb Ireland or Saturday Knights stuff too much myself, but other stuff he does can be excellent, eg anything with Brad. Looking forward to a new Brad album whenever they can do one. Havent heard Bayleaf cos you cant get it in this country, but it was done a fair while ago anyway and things have changed since then.

Thats a good point, and his contributions to the last 3 albums in particular demonstrate it pretty well (except for Life Wasted & Comatose):

    Binaural:
    Thin Air
    Of The Girl
    Rival
    Fatal
    Strangest Tribe

    RA:
Bushleaguer Riff (originally was a slower version i believe)
    All Or None

    S/T:
    Parachutes

I thought Rival was Jeff's song or he only wrote the lyrics for it?

No, Stone wrote the lyrics and music for Rival.

From Binaural, Jeff wrote the lyrics and music for Gods' Dice and Nothing As It Seems, and the music for Sleight of Hand.

  • well the ol'RK will go on record here and say that while the ol'RK does like Bayleaf. It's not the kind of record, the ol'RK runs to go listen to again. It is a more personally-fulfilling record from an artist kinda record in the ol'RK's opinion. However, the ol'RK does believe there are 2-3 real gems there and then the outtake "Shame On You" is completely one of the ol'RK's favorite songs that Stone has ever done. In the end, Stone is a really, amazing talented songwriter and his solo work really reflects the complexity and diversity of his abilities.

    Hope that helps...

I'm a HUGE fan of Bayleaf and would have loved for a following up to that record. I actually like Bayleaf better than ITW.

I just don't like all these little snippet of songs Stone's been teasing us with. Get the whole album out already! ;)

I first thought the thread was about the rolling stones: "the title is STONES recent stuff.." instead of "STONE'S recent stuff..."

personally, I love the few tracks that are avaialable.
It's clear those are not the best songs of the year but it's not supposed to be so.

  • I love the new stone stuff, but it's definitely not a style that ever had much of a chance of having widespread appeal to Pearl Jam fans.

I like the old school country sound though, and feel its much much better than Tone...

I still think this is Stone. And look what he has to be subjected to! I love Bayleaf BTW, I listen to it a lot and it's one of those which never gets tired!

And I'm not just saying this because it's Stone... :)

Not coincidentally, these are some of the strongest and most interesting songs on the last 3 albums. I'll take these tunes over comatose, gods' dice, save you, life wasted, ghost, cropduster, etc... any day.

    And Bay Leaf rocks!
she was underwhelmed, if that's a word
