Meeting Ed at solo shows

I know a lot of people met him after the shows. Do you all hang out by the front entrance until 2am? I'm going to one of the Boston shows and it seems like a good opportunity to finally meet him and shake his hand. Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks!

why would having a concert ticket sound like a good opportunity to meet him?
most of the meetings are by chance

This thread reminds me of that episode of Punk'd with Dirk Nowitski

For those who haven't seen it...this kid(in on the joke) comes up to Dirk in a restaurant setting askin for an autograph....he signs one, then this kid has a never ending bag of shit for him to sign, some of the stuff has nothing to do with B-ball.After a while Dirk starts refusing, cause it never ends

Hey Mr. Vedder I have Vinyl,posters,T-shirts, etc for you to sign

Then you can sign my Who collection, Neil Young stuff etc

also I have baseball bats, a picture of Ralph Nader, Anthony Keidis' sock...please Mr.Vedder dont walk away we're almost done

No offence, but all these threads asking how to meet the band... If i was a guy who met them then i wouldn't tell anyone else how.. unless they were special friends or something. Why ruin your chance and time with them becuase you told everyone how to meet them.

Unless it was a random city encounter :P

Eddie is like a ninja. He lurks in the shadows and can disapear at a moments notice.

He is also a master of disguise. You could be standing next to him at a show and you'd never even know it.

Keep a close eye as he could be anyone. A black man, A white woman, Tall, Short, Fat, Skinny.

If you spot him...Do not under any circumstances blow his cover. Just smile and walk away.

    Smile and walk away.

It is one thing to run in to a band member and ask for an autograph, but all of these pepole looking for the inside scoop to meet Ed are at least borderline stalkers.

thanks everyone for calling me a stalker. I've never waited after a show, and I have never waited in a hotel lobby. if I have to wait 4 hours after a show I can guarantee you I wouldn't do that either since some of you have said that's about how long after the show he comes out.

but thanks again for calling me a stalker, that one really made my day.

That's when i met him, and there were only about 8 or 9 other people around. It was at 3pm in the afternoon, hours before the show. After the show, there were hundreds of people in the same spot.

After the show is worse. He saw the crowd from about 150 feet away, and just waved and walked onto the bus. I didn't hang around afterwards, b/c i got my autograph and hand-shake earlier, but this is what i heard went down.

i dont really think its being a stalker to wait around after a show to meet someone whose music you listen to all the time it would definately be much better metting anyone in the band by chance but i see no problem with hangin out for a while to meet them. hey mccready hid under a tour bus or something to meet someone in a band are you gunna call him a stalker too?

yes he was a stalker at the time
  • fuck what anyone thinks

i'd chill in the shade for a few hours (and smoke a blunt to pass the time) if there was a chance i could shake Ed's hand (again :)) and exchange a few words.

there is nothing stalker-ish about wanting to meet someone who you admire and listen to almost everyday.

I bet Ed would of done it to meet Pete Townshend.

now breaking into their house and wearing their underwear while you sniff their sheets and dig through the family photos! that might be "stalker-ish" :D:D:D

I met Ed a couple of times... always before or after a gig.
And yeah, you wait... and wait. For me... it isn't a problem. It's not like Ed is in town every day, right?
The first time was after the All Tomorrow's Party show at U.C.L.A. There was only a handful (about 12 or 15) of us that hung around. I just wanted to let him know that I really loved his work and it meant a lot to me. Ed offered to sign something for everyone... some people got what they were wearing or anything in their pocket signed. I got a cover of the A.T.P. program signed and it is hanging in a frame in my home office.
    ...
What you DON'T want to do is take pictures. Ed specifically asks that no pictures be taken. If there is a huge crowd... it all depends on how you all act. For smaller numbers of fans... he just has you line up and he signs one thing. It's all pretty orderly.. if the crowd are not a-holes. A sure way to make him just hop in the van and split... camera flashes.
I always ask that they make it out to me... because it looks better and it seperates you from the people loking to sell it on E-Bay.
What Ed really seems to like... not asking for anything other than a handshake. It gives you the opportunity to talk briefly. And both times I just asked for a handshake... he handed me a guitar pick.
So, don't worry what other people think... if you want to give it a shot.. do it. Just show the same respect you'd show to anyone else.
    And good luck with that.

    Not rules... observations.
And I think it cool. It's not everyday you get to meet musicians you admire and respect. And a gig is someplace they expect to run into fans.
    ...
I understand... it's not your gig. But, just because you aren't interested doesn't mean the rest of us should follow suit, right?

I saw him that day, he was sort of walking his bike along past our car. We would have talked to him, but he was engaged in conversation with another fan who was walking along side him. We were going to offer him carrots and veggie burgers :).

That's beyond stalking, that's just plain sick. And you guys are throwing the word "stalker" around too much. I can understand that Mike waiting under a limo can be boarderline, but please give up the loose use of that word. Save it for the real ones that sit in front of their homes go through their trash, or constantly call them on the phone.
Here’s a question you might need to ask
What’s self destruction and how can we last?

"I cannot stop the thought of running in the dark.
Coming up a which way sign. All good truants must decide."

For the mansifelf shows we ran into matt and jeff and some of the crew members were all walking around in boston. so later we see maybe 4 or 5 people in front of there hotel, and its so obvious who there waiting for.

so literally 8 hours later there still fukin there waiting for ed.

    pathetic!

if they can add 1+1 im sure they have enough brains to realize that none of the band members are comin thru the main entrence but obviously not.

    idiots.

    just let the man live.

I agree, all that anyone hanging around a venue before or after a show is doing is being a "fan with time to wait". It may look pathetic to some, cool to others, or be a non-issue to others, but that by itself does *not* make someone a stalker.

"Stalker"ism kicks in when like others said, you can't respect the band's privacy. The band expects there to be fans at a show - hello, who else is gonna be in the audience?! They have security in case they really are in a rush when it's over. But hanging at their hotels... that is a bit much. And going to a band members' home is straight-stalking and totally inappropriate.

Stalking also kicks in when you "think" or "imagine" you have a "relationship" with the band that you don't have. Then, whether you follow them around or not, you're scary because you think Ed is speaking to you through song or whatever. Being moved by the music is awesome... but thinking Ed or whoever else wrote it FOR YOU or TO YOU is creepy.

If you wanna hang out after a show and wait around and you know how to be cool when Ed comes out, go for it if it would mean something to you. As long as you stay away from their hotel and their homes and their families (and their underwear!! :D ) don't worry about stalking, cuz you're probably not doing it.
