Your Most Disappointing Albums Of 2008?

The most disappointing album of '08 for me was Del Tha Funkee Homosapien's Eleventh Hour- was an awful record, especially because he hadn't released a solo record since 2000. He's still my favorite rapper nonetheless.

I'll add Nas' Untitled next, it didn't live up to the hype.

EDIT: Im gonna put Jeff's Tone to this list as well. ;)

Which album(s) were you disappointed with this year?

I haven't listened to any of those.
Mainly because I hate their lead off singles. :p

You're not missing much. They all have good songs on there, but as a whole, the albums are disappointing.

    My Morning Jacket

I was also a bit let down by Jenny Lewis' Acid Tongue, but unlike the case MMJ I still enjoy this album. It's just not what I was hoping for.

I forgot about that one. Although, I was expecting it to be terrible, so I wasn't exactly disappointed.

I kept wavering on this album. I finally realized that a big part of the problem is that right up front, about 3 of the first 5 tracks are so incredibly cheesy and poppy that it gives the album a bad taste from the start. Other than that, it's a great album. It didn't live up to the hype, but I suspect no album could live up to that kind of hype. I like it a lot on the whole though.

I'll sort of second whoever said Oasis too. It wasn't the most disappointing for me, I didn't have huge expectations. But it didn't even meet those and it was definitely a disappointment.

    My big two:

Kanye West- 808's & Heartbreak... I truly felt this whole album was a waste of my time.
Blind Melon- For my Friends... I wasn't one to hate the band for soldiering on, and the album wasn't bad, it was just utterly forgettable.

  • Only By the Night....in a way. I like it alright, I guess, but I ain't exactly what I was hoping for....strangely enough, it might be one of my favorites of the year as well....I'm just not sure what to make of it.
All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow

They say every sin is deadly but I believe they may be wrong...I'm guilty of all seven and I don't feel too bad at all

Blind Melon- For My Friends was 2007 and the reason it could be seen as forgettable is due to the fact that there wasnt any big talk about it at all. The band also hadn't done anything for over 10 years. It was one of the best of 2007 in my opinion.

Still haven't heard of Cardinology. Can't afford to buy too many CDs this year. I had to pay too many bills.

Bedlam in Goliath (Mars Volta) I hated. I loved their other CDs and when I heard this one i was disappointed.

About a week ago, I pulled it out of the collection and decided to play it once more. Strangely, I listened to it and thought this was incredible and WHY had I hated it when I first got it?
It's now forever playing and I now love this album to bits.

I wonder if anyone else had the same experience after buying an album and hearing it for the first time hated it - only 11 months down the line it becomes a favourite.

Absolutely I can remember Peter Gabriel's *SO* album, I even returned it i disliked it so much. I happened to hear a couple songs on the radio I couldn't believe they were from that album. I had to go out and repurchase the album and loved ever since. Similar thing with Michael Franti and Spearhead's latest album ALL REBEL ROCKERS I've now had to stop listening to it just give it a break.

It was 2008. I know it seems like ages ago ;)

The reason I found it forgettable had nothing to do with lack of talk. I listened to it several times. It was forgettable because the songs were kind of generic and unmemorable. Like I said, it wasn't a bad album, and it fit in well with the live set they were doing, but it was a disappointment for me.

  • Gotta be GNR's Chinese Democracy. After all the hype and waiting, what a piece of crap that album is.

I usually go back and listen to albums again some time as much as 6 months in the future and sometimes they do shock me and i end up liking them.

    For example:
QOTSA Songs for the Deaf- i could not get pass the bullshit commentary at the begigning and the end of the songs it annoyed me and i dismissed the album. I went back to it and the music was too good form me not to like.

Shins first Album- i just could not get into it it bored me then went back to it and i really liked it

I'll have to go back to Bedlam again and see if i can dig it now

  • I thought MMJ's live show was near flawless before this album. The concert I saw this year dragged because of the pathetic slow songs from Evil Urges. I was also disappointed with Consolers of the Lonely, Only By The Night, and Chinese Democracy
  • chittychitty Posts: 609
I like KOL, but Only by the Night was a disappointment after hearing Sex on fire over and over on the radio. It is by far the album's best song. Some others are good, but going from SOF to the rest was a MAJOR disappointment.
So after loving the intial single, the rest of the album was a huge disappointment!
  • The Killers' - Day & Age - really wanted to like this album, but it's by far their weakest effort.

GNR - Chinese Democracy - I really REALLY wanted to hate this album and for it to be the worst thing that's ever taken 17 years to create. And don't get me wrong, overall it's pretty bad. But at the same time, a lot of the songs have that classic GNR sound.

Vampire Weekend - self-titled. I really don't know what the big deal is about these guys. Just because you rip off Paul Simon's Jamaica-esque vibe from 20 years ago doesn't mean you're original.

Black Kids - Partie Traumatic. Hot Hot Heat called. They want their lead singer back.

M83 - Saturdays=Youth. Aside from the one radio single, sounds like you're stuck in a really bad 80's movie.

The Airborne Toxic Event - self-titled. So so so overrated. The most unoriginal, derivative album I have ever heard.

I don't know if these all qualify as "disappointing", because many weren't known before this year therefore having no expectations, but they're the worst albums of the year.
