ok I´m gonna say it: Hartford 08 is a little overrated

Just finished listening to all the 08 boots. Of course I´m partial to the MSG boots cause I was there.
And I actually considered Hartford as well, so you can go and say I´m maybe just a little bit jealous... (:

However, the Hartford boot is not so great in my opinion, anybody else feel the same way?
I think it´s pretty great in terms of setlist, crowd-participation and so on, but all in all the band is not that into it, they seem a bit tired.
It kind of reminds me of the Marseille 06 boot which displayed a cool setlist but was kind of sloppy.

Can´t keep: Never heard a more sloppy version than this one. Everybody in the band seem to have forgotten their parts.
Last exit: The solo is really strange, and the entire song lacks energy.
And a couple of others I can´t remember at the time...

When I listened to the DC show, for instance, I thought it was pretty dynamic and well-played with a great crowd energy, but that one rarely gets any love in here.

Discuss...

Couldn't have said it better man! I don't see what others see in the Hartford show I guess. So maybe they played a few songs that aren't regulars but that doesn't make it into the "GREATEST SHOW OF ALL TIME" some are making it out to be...

BTW, DC boot is my favorite of the entire tour.
  • I disagree; I think it's less sloppy than some of the other shows and they were full of energy. I was there and remember. They played a lot of songs that they normally don't and well.
    SLC 11/2/95, Park City 6/21/98, Boise 11/3/00, Seattle 12/9/02, Vancouver 5/30/03, Gorge 9/1/05, Vancouver 9/2/05, Gorge 7/22/06, Gorge 7/23/06, Camden I 6/19/08, MSG I 6/24/08, MSG II 6/25/08, Hartford 6/27/08, Mansfield II 6/30/08; Eddie Albany 6/8/09, 6/9/09; Philly 10/30/09, 10/31/09; Boston 5/17/10
I thought the world...Turns out the world thought me
  • I was there and I agree somewhat.
Very good show, but I liked Mansfield 2 much more.

I think it is a great show, especially if you are looking for rarities. Its great to play it and hear all those songs. But as for the best show of the tour? I think MSG1, DC, and Bonnaroo were all better overall.

BeerBaron is right on. It was very humid and hot. The band was tired - very tired. Stone has said that Ed pulled it out and let loose to save the show. And I think that is what showed - when Ed lets loose and saves a show in the spirit of the Bat Wings, the show becomes a classic, especially to those of us that were there and witnessed the energy he put into it despite the conditions. That's what makes Ed Ed and is why we all know what a bad-ass he is.
  • The boot isn't a clear indication of how good the show was. The sound in DC wasn't that great in person in my opinion, but the boot sounds excellent. I agree that they started out sloppy in Hartford, but most of the show they were clicking on all cylinders.

can't speak for the boot quality of any of the '08 shows as i haven't even managed to find the time to sit down and listen to them; however, you can NOT judge a show based on a boot, just to emphasize the point made above.

you had to be at Hartford '08 to fully appreciate the experience,...it was obvious right from the opening notes the band intended to make up for the chilly evening that was Hartford '06. the band was indeed firing on ALL cylinders, and just having a GREAT time.

perhaps that's why the band members' wives never made the trip out to Hartford (as had been reported),...the boys wanted a "night off" to just let it all hang out ;)

p.s. i'll bet those that were delayed in the 10C pick-up line are gonna have some negative things to say about the evening :)

I was just getting my tickets during Sad and heard Brain of J walking in the building... Big Wave was exactly what it felt like walking to my seats...it made me forget all about being pissed off in the line outside. Then came "in Hiding"....I was all set for the rest of the night

I have always said that Mikey is the bellwether of what kind of show band will give you..

If he is on... buckle up.. you are in for it!

He was smokin' from "Breakerfall" on.. and the Porch solo is close to spontaneous combustion..

A "take no prisoners" performance by my favorite band...

PLUS F##cking Up instead of the usual encores..

  • I was not at the show, but this it is becoming one of my favorite bootlegs of all time.

I was at hartford as well as mansfield 2 and after the shows I felt that hartford was better in all areas. and listening to the boots only confirmed this. it was amazing, enough said

I totally agree! The atmosphere was really hot, and so was the show.

...also the OP is right about D.C., great show I just wished I was there for that one as well.

  • I haven't listened to the boot yet, I'm afraid

That show was amazing, It's the only show I've ever sat in the very last row from and all the way back there the band kicked my ass.

I almost vomited on several occasions due to the sheer exhaustion in the first half hour.

Someone in my group got their nipples pinched by a stranger from the energy of the show (dude on dude pinching), someone broke their toe, there were FIREWORKS in the walkway behind us during the show, riots and arrests.

Hartford is now a verb in my circle of friends.

Maybe you had to be there, maybe you just need your nipples pinched.
  • Took my brother to the Hartford show. He's been to a lot of concerts for other bands - ranging from DMB, U2, Phish, Rage, etc. - and he goes to a lot of clubs to see live music.

But somehow, he had never seen a live PJ show - so Hartford 08 was his first and I was eager to hear his opinion after the show.

His comments after the show and on the ride home made me realize how much we take this band for granted. I mean, I've been to 20+ PJ shows and felt Hartford was one of the best. But my brother summed it up this way:

    - "Holy (expletive) - Eddie Vedder is THE BEST front man ever - I could not take my eyes off him all night"
    - "I can't believe how long they played and with so much energy. And at the end, they didn't seem to want to leave, they looked they wanted to play more songs."
    - "Mike McCready is unreal."
    - "I was worried at first because I didn't know a lot of the songs, but they played so many songs I heard so many songs I knew.
    - "Now I know why your a psycho when it comes to Pearl Jam and why you've seen these guys so many times."

Anyway, I think the coolest thing about my brother's comments, is that he would likely have made those same comments after seeing ANY PJ show for the first time!

holy crap, talk about a first show to experience!

i was at this show and it blew my mind. beautiful. one of the best i've ever seen, and i've been fortunate to be at some amazing shows over the years.

this reminds me of a louis armstrong quote, when a reporter asked him to define jazz. he said 'if you gotta ask, you ain't ever gonna know'.

if you can listen to mike's solo in immortality, the sheer brutality of hearing comatose/leash/blood *in a fucking row???*...and still say it isn't all that....ain't nothing anybody here can say to lead you to the light buddy :)

I haven't listened to the boot....but you probably had to be there.
It was one of the most amazing shows I have ever seen and I saw REM open for the Police waaaayyyy back.
I could not believe the setlist and I thought they sounded great. It is a LIVE experience...there are bound to be fuck ups.

    best PJ show I've seen

  • Ill admit that Can't keep and last exit were kinda sloppy, but the res were great. Ed was NOT tired, he was moving around the whole fuckin time. Standouts for me:

    Breakerfall- opening verse sounded intense
Not For You- Longer than normal, extremely intense.
Immortality- Fucking awesome solo, but Ill admit the ending wasn't incredible. (matt really only cymballed out for the ending, kinda boring)
Porch- The jam was circa 1992. They were on fire!
Even Flow- Great Mike solo, Entire solo was played behind his back.
Blood- love the atomic dog tag
Smile- although I wish they extended the outro like they usually do.
Fuckin' Up- Intense version, great way to leave the crowd on fire
Yellow Led- Little Wing tag was a great little ending

You had to be there, the band was loving it that night.
    5/28/06, 6/27/08, 10/28/09, 5/18/10, 5/21/10

  • and can we talk about the rumor that Jeff wrote the setlist?

Having seen PJ in Hartford in '06 and actually thinking that I could pass up that venue in the future...I flew from cali just for that show and I cannot be more glad that I did.

I've seen the boys 24 times now and Hartford is definitely in the top five or even three of the best shows I've seen, even counting non pj shows.
  • yeah this show was the best for me as far as set list are concerned plus 4th row dead center had alot to do with it, but the crowds in both the MSG shows were the best of the whole tour, and i hope they never play this HARTFORD venue again the same goes for that dump in MANSFIELD .....both of these places suck ...
jesus greets me looks just like me ....
  • i was at camden 1, msg 1 and hartford and hartford really tops the list. i really don't think the band was as sloppy as everyone thinks. i can't begin to say how amazed i was by this set and the energy in a lot of these songs. Can't Keep was much better there than the boot, it sounded great not that sloppy. Breakerfall and gods' dice were a great start. Brain of J. also sounded awesome that night. In Hiding wasn't as great as camden but it was still amazing, just like garden was amazing not as good as msg 2 but still great. Immortality and Not For You sounded the best i have ever heard them on any bootleg and jeremy sounded as great as it should, even if i've heard it a million times i still loved it this night. then the encores really were nothing but energy leash, blood, dte, smile, fuckin up and ending with an amazing little wing tag was a perfect ending. i don't think this is the best show they have ever played but it really in my opinion was the best of the tour and really a stand out show for them. i don't know how you could say this is over rated.

I could be guaranteed a show the same as this and I still wouldnt go to that hell-hole called the Meadows. Jim Koplik is an asshole. Even the greatest concert experience such as this was tarnished for many.

the crowds at MSG were definitely awesome. the lawn at hartford was crazy loud, i remember looking back during jeremy and just taking it in. i was with ana's group, we were in the back of the seated area so we had a great vantage point of the whole experience

if they had the hartford setlist at the 2nd MSG show, i would have needed a cigarette afterwards lol
