Queens of the Stone Age - Where to start?

Don't ask me why, but I've never bought a Queens of the Stone Age album!

I've always like the tracks I've heard, it's just there's always been something else around that I've spent my money on instead.
Big question is now, where do I start? Someone mentioned that maybe 'R' is the album to start off with! Help?!

songs for the deaf is the easiest to get into, after that i'd go with lullabyes to paralyze then rated r. the first album is probably their weakest imo.

    I rank them like so:
    Rated R
    Song for the Deaf
    Self titled
    Lullabyes

Lullabyes is not bad i just dig the others better. Their are monster riffs and jams on the self titled.

Mexicola is a must listen for any fan of the band. Guaraunteed to make you bang your head or your money back :D

I only got into them over the last week.
Heard the song 'Medication' which a sound guy played between bands at a gig.
I was like who is that song by?
My friend urged me to check them out so I purchased Rated R, Songs for the Deaf and Lullabies to Paralyze. I like Rated R the best on first listen.

I just got into QOTSA the past half year and I agree Like Clockwork is absolutely phenomenal! So happy to discover them.

Absolutely. I love all of their albums (and btw, I think that Era Vulgaris is underrated, plus the vinyl sounds great, with a neat 10" format), but ...Like Clockwork is their masterpiece for sure (so far!).

I am working my way through their discography and have been spinning Lullabies to Paralyze the last few weeks. I started with Songs years ago then discovered Like Clockwork just a few months back and have followed with Rated R/X and I have yet to be remotely disappointed. So I was eager to spend some time with Lullabies the past few weeks. It has a lot of really good songs, but I am having a hard time digesting the album. FWIW I am an album listener, I don't just listen to songs. But this album just doesn't flow very well...at all. Any thoughts?

I personally love Era Vulgaris. There are some fabulous songs on there that I always kind of tend to forget about. I'm Designer is such a hot piece, for example! I also love Suture up your Future, Misfit Love (You gotta watch this performance of it, drool:) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYw0KhwXdAY,
and, last but not least amongst all the rest of the goodness... The Fun Machine Took a Shit And Died. One of my favourite songs in general. So many twists and turns in there. I lost my shit when they played that at PJ20

Also, I would like to recommend their unplugged show. Here is I Never Came from that one, another song that I absolutely adore. The whole show was out on youtube for a bit, no idea where it is now. I love that Josh talks dirty in German in there too haha Well, and overall the songs sound great in acoustic as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPxLWIJYr-k

Lullabies was the album that brought me to them. I think it flows fantastically. I must have listened to it a thousand times  It was odd when they did the reissue that suddenly Skin on Skin was not at the end of a side but in the beginning. But god yeah, I love this album.

Ahhhhh! What am I missing with Lullabies? Maybe I am getting over saturated with QOTSA since I basically rediscovered them just in the past half year and have been binging on their albums ever since. I have yet to hear their self titled album or Era Vulgaris just yet. Let me get back to spinning some Lullabies. By the way, is Like a Drug considered a Lullabies song because that song just screams coolness.

Hmmm, to me it is a Desert Sessions song, I guess. But Qotsa as well. Have you ever seen their concert movie? Great version sung by Josh at the beginning too :)

It's legitimate music, some of it very good some not. It's basically a rotating collection of Palm Desert musicians getting together to write and record music. In not a vinyl listener so I can't really say how they sound.

There are fake Desert Session albums out there and there are legit ones. The legit ones are of course more expensive. I have some fake ones and they are ok in my book. I don't like all of them, my favourite is Black Anvil Ego, Vol 6. And I still want to get Vol 9/ 10 one day. The cool thing is that some of them contain earlier versions of some Qotsa material, pretty interesting to see how they evolved and developed. This is one of my favourite songs. Definitely worth checking out :)
