What Is 'Metal' ?!

Walking round my local music store. I noticed that albums by bands that I'd consider to be 'pop', such as Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance etc were to be found in the 'metal' section!
Then when I tried looking for Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, AC/DC, they were in the 'pop' section!!! What's going on? These bands invented the genre!
Even bands like Faith No More, Soundgarden, Dinosaur Jr were in the 'pop' section!

Looks like I've been kidding myself all these years thinking I was a rock fan. Seems I'm a pop tart after all !!!!
Cymru Am Byth

most places you go to will group rock and pop together.

Panic at the disco fall out boy and my chemical romance being listed in the metal section is borderline criminal.

I think you had a stoned record store employee. If Panic at the Disco is "Metal" then my abs look like Brad Pitt's in Fight Club.

  • I think someone was having fun w/ the store...or the store was having fun w/ its customers.

I miss the old record store in town, they had a whole 'punk' section...tons of great stuff. Tons of actual records too. Now all there is is a CD warehouse and Best buy/target and every other corporate store.

i was going to make a crack about metal (ive expressed my dislike of the genre before), but i've got to admit, that classification blows my mind. i cant wrap my head around it. makes no sense.

there's a Shite Metal section! Nevermore, Opeth, Pantera... rarr!

    This might help:
    GRIND METAL:
The protagonist arrives, screams something completely undecipherable for about 2 mintues and then leaves...

    POWER /SYMPHONIC METAL:
The protagonist arrives riding a white unicorn, escapes from the
dragon, saves the princess and they make love in an enchanted forest

    TRASH METAL:
The protagonist arrives, fights the dragon, saves the princess and
fucks her....... easy and quick (10 mins or less)

    HEAVY METAL:
The protagonist arrives on a Harley Davidson, kills the dragon, drinks some beers and fucks the princess

    FOLK METAL:
The protagonist arrives with some friends playing accordions, violins, flutes and many more weird instruments, the dragon falls asleep (from all the dancing) protagonist leaves without the princess

    VIKING METAL:
The protagonist arrives in a ship, kills the dragon with his migthy
axe, cooks and eats it, rapes the princess to death, steals the castle and burns the place before he leaves

    DEATH METAL:
The protagonist arrives, kills the dragon, fucks the princess and
    kills her, then leaves

    BLACK METAL:
The protagonist arrives at midnight, kills the dragon and impales it in the front of the castle.....then sodomizes the princess, drinks her blood in a ritual before killing her.....then he impales the deflowered princess too

    GORE METAL:
The protagonist arrives, kills the dragon and spreads his guts in the front of the castle, fucks the princess and kills her....then he fucks again her dead body, slashes her belly open and eatsher guts, fucks the carcass for the third time, burns the corpse and fucks it for the last time

    DOOM METAL:
The protagonist arrives, sees the size of the dragon and thinks that he never could beat him, gets depressed and commits suicide....the dragon eats his body and the princess as well

    PROGRESIVE METAL:
The protagonist arrives with a guitar and plays a solo for 26 minutes, the dragon kills himself out of boredom, the protagonist arrives to the princess' bedroom, plays another solo with all the techniques learned in the last year of the conservatory... the princess escapes, and is now looking for the "HEAVY METAL" protagonist

    GLAM METAL:
The protagonist arrives, the dragon laughs at the guy's appearance and lets him enter, he steals the princess' make-up and tries to paint the castle in a beautiful pink color

    INDUSTRIAL METAL:
The protagonist arrives wearing greasy overcoat, makes an obscene gestures towards dragon, and gets escorted out of fairy tale land by security guards.

Fuck that if you want real metal, you've got to go old school. At a party a couple weeks ago after about 10 cocktails we started playing a game of who could remember the most hilarious, horrible, ridiculous....etc.... Metal band. Some of my personal favorites that came up.

    GWAR
    Helloween
    King Diamond

Does Accept or Wasp count as metal? If so they were quite ridiculous.

Pretty funny description of the various metal genres. I loved the Viking one that one!

IMO GWAR is a touring freak show, never considered them much of anything but a novelty

"old school" metal at one point consisted of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, can you believe that? wow how things have changed with metal over the years

True but Maiden and Priest actually had talent. GWAR, Helloween and King Diamond were just so bad and absurd that they were a train wreck.
