Oh Yeah!
This album is really great. Metallica have finally returned to what they do best - Thrash!
I´m 30 + and I have been kind of a fan since Master of Puppets - i just can´t let them go, even tough they have made their really bad record(s)
I´ve been listening to DM all day, and it seems to keep growing.
"All nightmare long" is my favorite track after the first five spins.

I can´t wait for them to play Europe indoor this spring.

What do you guys think????
Run away my son. See it all. Oh see the world.

  • It's awesome! We've had some really great threads about it ever since it leaked, so you can get lots of opinions by checking those.

  • i really really like this album - i was pumped to hear them return to some of the things they do best like ridiculous solos by kirk, a fast-paced, un steel-drum sounding drumming by lars and some really really heavy tracks

i was also extremely happy to hear another instrumental as that used to be a staple of metallica albums - this is their finest work (not hard to accomplish) in many years and i absolutely can not wait for the philly shows as i will be on the floor
9/1/2000 - E-Centre, Camden, 'Sometimes' started and I was hooked...

"The End Of The Line" does have that "Animal" feel to it. I wouldn't go as far to say Metallica ripped off Pearl Jam, but I do hear similarities. Hell, who doesn't borrow ideas from another band nowadays?

I got it today to :) it sounds great. It's the first Metallica album I've bought on release day since the Black album, and that was the 3rd in a row. It just sounds like a really great Metallica record :)
    I came, I saw, I concurred.....

Picked up the CD today for my brother in law. Checked the tracklisting on the back and saw one song is titled Unforgiven III. I thought Unforgiven II was going too far but having a third is just ridiculous.

Musicly it's nothing like 1 and 2 it's just the lyrics fit with the other two so they called it Unforgiven 3. It's a completley different song, i think it's the weakest on the album actually but it's still not bad.

  • unforgiven 3 is a good song, and just cause of its name doesnt mean it takes anything away from the first 2, its fits in pretty well on this album and its hard to find a weakest track cause they all fuckin rock!!

I think I've listened to this album at least 20 times since it leaked last Tuesday. I can't get enough of it. Broken Beat & Scarred and All Nightmare Long are the best songs... BB&S has such a cool riff, and the drums make all the quirky time changes connect so well. ANL is really unique. The whole album is loaded with outstanding musicianship. These assholes really impressed the fuck out of me with this one.

Hetfield's voice is mostly what was wrong with Load, Reload and especially St. Anger. And he was just painful to listen to on some of the Garage Inc songs, like Loverman.

But on Death Magnetic, the Hetfieldisms are at worst just amusing. He does a hilarious growl towards the end of Cyanide. But a lot of the time, his vocals are truly badass. When he sings "WHAT DON'T KILL YA, MAKE YA MORE STRONG!" - i mean, it's looks stupid when you type it out, but it sounds fucking awesome.

i just picked up the album a few minutes ago.... got throught the first 3 songs so far.... not bad compared to the last 2-3 pieces of shit they put out...especially the last one... I have been a Metallica fan since 1982... i have seen them about a dozen times and at one point they were my favorite band. Master of Puppets for me is one of my favorite albums of all time... and still is...

i hope the rest of this album is good...just need to get used to 7.5 minute song averages again....that is tough!

and still jonesing for another show....

  • I didnt know it was out now... Well todays my day off, and I just got paid. Looks like I'll be heading over to best buy in a few. Just from the one song I'veheard and clips of other songs, it sounds very promising. This is coming from someone who doesn't listen to Metallica....at all.

Got it last night for just 5 bucks in Hot Topic! (No I was not shopping there, just walking by and saw it).

Anyway, awesome album. When I first heard The Day That Never Comes I felt kinda disappointed, thinking the album was just another over-hyped mediocre album. But as more songs were being released, and then it leaked, I was really getting into it. Now I must agree, best album since ..And Justice For All. Black is good, but it's the album where they started moving away from what they do best, thrash. This was a much needed return.

I don't know why people think it's OK to steal music. Is it just because you don't have to steal it from a store or something? I think the whole downloading thing has been blown out of proportion. Just because a guy steals say £200 worth of music in one month doesn't mean he's cost the industry £200 because chances are he wouldn't have bought that much anyway. Still it is wrong.

That is a good point, one that people often forget. I think the problem is, when stealing becomes as easy as clicking a mouse within the comforts of home, people forget that it is still stealing after all.

  • People who always bring who the napster shit 7 years later neglect to mention the reason the whole Napster battle started was because somehow an unfinish version of one of their songs (I Disappear) ended up on Napster. I would have been fucking pissed as well. IN investigating that they found that all of their music was being made available for free. Again, I would be pissed. I think maybe they went about it the wrong way but come on it. It's not like every person they "sued" got a document from a lawyer or something.

Yes I will quote myself here :) I have nothing against Lars for standing up against illegal file sharing (beacuse it was the right thing to do) what bugs me is his childlike behavior about the whole thing. Instead of gracefully standing up to Napster in court he stormed over to their central server with a list of every person who had downloaded a Metallica song (I'm sure my name was on that list ;) ) and demanded they be banned acting like it was a personal insult to him. I agree that illegal file sharing is wrong but for a man with millions of dollars to target and treat his fans like they were stealing a Bentley out of his driveway is not cool. But hey thats just my opinion to each his own.
On the other hand thanks to all those Mp3's I downloaded years ago I own way more CD's. (CD's I know I wouldn't own if it wasn't for Illegal file sharing) I bet you anything I wouldn't own half of the ones I do if it wasn't for programs like Napster.

P.S. I bought the new Metallica album and YES its awesome. So Lars I forgive you :)

I see what your sayin. A lot of people were against Lars because he was a millionaire and he didn't need anymore money BUT no one is goin to listen to some guy from a little band are they? They needed someone big to put this case forward, a lot of musicians were agreeing with Lars but they were just to cowedley to make a stand themselves.

Anywhoo this time tomorrow i'll be seein Metallica for the first time. I'm pumped for this especially after seein' the Berlin setlist.

Exactly, and this is something Lars will never understand.

I've mentioned this before but I once, rather bashfully, admitted to a musician that I had downloaded his album illegally and he told me he would rather I stole it than never get a chance to hear it. THAT should be the attitude of an artist. Lars is not an artist, Lars is a businessman. Add to this the fact that, unlike Lars, the musician I am talking about probably hasn't seen a royalty from the album since 1986 and has a 9 to 5 job. He was still just happy that I'd heard it. One day I'll reward the guy by shelling out what will probably be a small fortune for a vinyl copy of the record, since that's all that's available. I'll never put another penny in the back pocket of Lars Ulrich.

I'll illegally download Death Magnetic soon and then post my thoughts :)
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"
  • I really enjoyed this album; initially I was worried as I enjoyed Load/Reload/St. Anger and I didn't want the band to force the thrash aspect back in but they really did pull it off. Interesting that all the songs were written by every band member too; that's never happened before.

Exactly. There's really no faking on this album. It's not like they tried to go back to thrash for the sake of it, they actually were at that point as a band and were able to slide back into it. Whenever you try to force something out of yourself, that's when a bad album happens. You gotta go with what you got. And it would seem they are really back to thrash.

  • I've got The Judas Kiss as my ringtone right now.

I think each member shows their top strengths on certain songs.

James (Vocals):That Was Just Your Life
    Rob:The End of the Line
    Lars:Suicide and Redemption
    Kirk:The Judas Kiss

Great album. I was reading on amazon.com though how people were disappointed with how it sounds. Supposedly they did a lot of distortion through the computer. I'm not too familiar with this kind of stuff but anyone else notice this?
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.
  • This album is a fuckin monster.
