Just got back from seeing them at Leeds festival, they were pretty good although certinally not the highlight. They had to stop the crowd becuase it was getting too hectic - I was at the front and I crowd surfed my way out because it was too much.

TBH, I was a bit dissapointed. Maybe I was expecting some jams like Queens of the Stone Age (fucking brilliant, blew Rage out of the water) did in their set before, or when Pearl Jam played in 06. But it was just them cranking out the songs with no interaction with the crowd at all.

To top it all off, it looked like Reading got the better setlist ;). Born Of A Broken Man, Wake Up, Ashes In The Fall...we did get Renegades of Funk though, although I can take or leave Down Rodeo.

So yeah, hope they get busy with a new album. They did seem very happy on the stage.

This whole reunion thing is pissing me off, They played T in the park and forbid the bbc to show footage of them and again with reading/leeds no footage over the weekend.

What gives? Surely they'd want to get their "message" to as many people as possible, It would be nice if they at least had one or two new songs to play but to just crank out the same old setlist for the millionth time just smacks of laziness and carey/Lopez style prima donnaism.

They used to be one of my favourite bands but they just strike me as music for 12 year old kids to annoy their parents to now.

Paying nearly 70 quid to see PJ at a festival? Like I did at reading 2006, I'm there, guaranteed different setlist from the previous show, good banter, good rapport with the crowd.

paying nearly 70 quid to see ratm at a festival? No thanks, no banter/rapport with the crowd, cranking out the same old songs the same old way.

yeah i agree. im a big RATM fan and aside from the fact that i dont condone reformations, they really shouldve had the decency to play something new as well as the old tried and true shit. doesnt zach or tom have anything to say? or did tom use it all for the nightwatchman?

  • I was at Reading and would have loved to have seen Down Rodeo in the place of Born Of A Broken Man. Ashes In The Fall was immense though. Zack had a great speech and the whole gig was pretty incredible just because it was RATM. They did a jam at Reading and a cool new intro to Ashes In The Fall. Brad was really mixing up the drum parts too. Still, it was a pretty standard Rage performance, but that's what they do best I suppose.
I was expecting something amazing from QOTSA but they really did bore me to tears in places. Endless three chord songs with Homme's half-falsetto vocal line in every fucking song. I'll never understand the love for this band.

I saw them in Paris last week and I thought they were great. The only words Zach said were "Hello we're Rage Againsth the Machine from Los Angeles California" and played on for 1h28 minutes without saying something else. So no interaction with the crowd, at least no worded interaction. But the show was awesome, so much energy, so many kick-ass songs. It was really intense, I couldn't stay up front though, I left after Bullet in the head it was getting a little too wild.
I don't know how to describe it but the energy and the obvious pleasure every one had (the crowd as well as the band) made this a great experience. Communication without words, I don't really know how to put it.
I did feel like a 14 year old after the show too, which makes me understand what 3manstack said :)
I'm just disappointed we didn't get ashes in the fall.

I haven't seen RATM live but I've seen lots of live footage over the years and not once does Zach Ferrero Rocher (as I call him) smile, thank the crowd, try involve the crowd ect....You can't be angry over the injustices of the world all the time. Lighten up zach....just a little bit.

i dug their set at lolla, but i was never a huge fan. i'm kinda hooked on them now though.

radiohead was the disappointment for me.
    and like that... he's gone.
  • I think people set their expectations too high coming into a RATM show, which is why they often get let down. It's like if Rage doesn't put on the concert of the year, it automatically sucks.

Rage isn't a jam band, and they aren't playing festivals now so they can test out new material or make speeches. They're playing to earn some money, and pummel you with some of the best live music you'll ever see performed. :p

queens are in a league of their own with those jams and tightness of their play, what with all the intricate tempo changes in their songs....they fuckin rock live man....i havent seen rage since 97 so cant comment, but they kicked some major, major ass in 97...bullet in the head was fucking crazy

rage's life show is out of this world. i wish they would go on a tour rather than just playing festivals.
  • Yeah they stopped their set at Lolla cause of the crowd too. The lulls sort of killed the momentum they had going at the beginning.

I saw them at Voodoo in New Orleans back in October and it was amazing. The crowd was chill and they played a shitload off of Evil Empire including Vietnow and Down Rodeo. I don't think that show will ever be topped.

Lil Wayne is better than Pearl Jam.

i saw them at voodoo as well, i thought it was a great performance.

i'm glad to hear that they are being responsible for a change and stopping the crowd. i saw them at coachella, their first reunion show in 07, and the crowd was ridiculously out of hand, a lot of people got hurt and it was packed in the medic tent. i was front row on the rail, and could only bear 6 songs before i had to pull out.
    "Don't go BP Amoco!"
  • Yeah, new stuff? start recording? They already said that they weren't getting back together to record, just to tour and have fun. Enjoy it while you can...

I'm seeing them here in Mpls Sept 3, not a festival but will be during the Republican National Convention across the river in St Paul so I'm sure Zach will have something to say.

Saw Rage at the weekend, and they were outstanding, simply as good as a band ever needs to be, and everything it promised to be.

my word, what a band, what a performance, what intensity, and most of all what energy. Its like they've never been away they were that tight.

Most bands of that nature have a few slow ones to catch your breath, not Rage, it was pure balls to the wall rock...

They just raised the bar once again, and thankfully the sound was perfect

Security even had to stop the show...due to fears of injury. crazy.

The OP needs to think long and hard about what to expect from a RATM show....a comfy ride? fucking hell get in the real world, the crowd was immense. And do you really want Zach to waste precious playing time to tell you about an innocent cop killer? no thanks...

RATM were sublime, and the true highlight. personally didnt dig Queens so much, seemed a little boring to me.

The fuck are you talking about? It's Rage Against The Machine, the key word been Rage. Of course I don't expect a comfy ride.

And yeah, I'm interested in what Zach has to say. If he just wants to convey that through songs, then that's fine - it's a festival after all. But a bit of crowd interaction wouldn't hurt.

    Were you at Leeds btw?
  • What about the big speech during Wake Up? And by the way guys it's ZACK.

EDIT: Just saw that you were at Leeds. Nevermind.

    Yes guys at Leeds

missed all the boiler suit antics and all that, but still very very pleased with what i saw.

The thing thats puzzling me a bit here, is that I've seen Rage in 1993, 1996, 2000, and now 2008 and they have NEVER interacted with the crowd much....its always the same....we're rage against the machine from los angeles california...and thats it!!!

as for spelling his name wrong, I'm ashamed.....

in the meantime, did anyone pick up the soccer shirt RATM 08 from the merch stands and decided its not for them?
  • I got the red star t-shirt with the European tour dates on the back. For some reason I kept getting compliments on it from random people calling it "the best t-shirt at the whole festival". Weird.

I saw them at T in the Park in July and they were excellent, Zac's speeches were a bit tiresome though, especially when was encouraging the crowd to burn US embassies and not buy American products anymore, both brainless things to say to be honest. I remember him running about the stage shouting to the crowd about people power, and basically saying how the government were scared of people power. I remember him screaming constantly 'They're scared of you, they're scared of you!!!!!' I remember thinking afterwards, im bouncing around absolutely wasted in the middle of a muddy field in rural Scotland, im in no state to be a threat to anyone!!
People say im paranoid. Well, they dont say it, but i know that's what they are thinking.

I saw RATM at Wembley in 2000 and they were immense, blew me away. I was in the pit and it really kicked off.
The only downer of the night was I forgot to pick up my ticket stub on the way out, if anyone knows of a spare ticket stub lying around then I would be eternally grateful.

Just got back from seeing Rage in Mpls, unbelievable show, I haven't seen an arena crowd go that crazy ever. The band came out in orange jumpsuits and hoods, stood there for a minute with sirens blaring and then launched into Bombtrack still wearing the outfits. They played about 90 minutes, closed with Freedom>Killing In the Name. After the show was over Zack asked the crowd to leave peacefully as the police were looking to start things outside. Once outside the whole fucking arena was surrounded by police in riot gear, it was crazy, cops on bikes, motorcycles, horses everything waiting for the crowd. Thankfully nothing major happened, I guess a couple dozen were arrested but most left peacefully.
