Phil Lesh - Just as integral to the Deads sound as Garcia, and never content to play a standard bass line."You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Though nobody in Tool jump around and act all crazy really, their bassist Justin Chancellor is often in the forefront of the music and always right in front during shows. In fact, Justin does a lot of the traditional soloing on the albums while Adam keeps time on guitar, even though its usually a different time than anyone else is playing.

Cliff motherfuckin' Burton is a bass god. So is Steve Harris from Iron Maiden.

Velvet Rope wrote:Hmm, well, i got my ass handed to me on that one, but just answer the question, why are they always in the back, almost never a bass solo in a song, and bass guitarists arent very well known?
The reason why is because they are the rhythm, so they usually like to hang around by the drummer. Bass + Drums = tight rhythm!"Propaganda is to a democracy what a bludgeon is to a totalitarian state."

Leon Wilkeson of Skynyrd was a damn good bassist and pretty well-known by the southern rock crowd. I also agree with others on Ament, Flea, Phil Lesh, Mccartney (althought known more for his singing/songwriting I'd say). Roger Waters is great bassist as well although I know he is also more known for his songwriting, he is still a terrific bass player.0

Oh yeah I forgot Family Man (The Wailers), Bootsy Collins, Eric Avery, and possibly my favorite bassist of all time Jaco Pastorius. There are a lot of great bass players out there and yeah they don't generally get too much attention but that's not what music is about anyways.0

Flea.
The man's a legend..
and Timmy from RATM, Battle of Los Angeles is an amazing album for bass...
And listen to ANY smiths record...Rourke is incredible...'The more I studied religions the more I am convinced that man never worshipped anything but himself.' - Sir Richard Francis Burton0 -

Simple, the bass is the instrument that requires the least skill to play, there really just guitarist who couldn't make it!

anyway..
bass is the spine and legs of a band..
without one things fall apart; especially in a band that does a lot of lead work. It's a foundation. Bass isn't usually about doing fancy les claypool stuff.
bands based around the bass player are sometimes.. (like claypool)
Come on pilgrim you know he loves you..

Limp Biscuit Rule!!!
everything in this post is sooooo wrong. ESPECIALLY the last part.....
any of the bassists from jethro tull, especially the one who recorded aqualung, i cant remember his name cause there has been like 100 memebers in that band!
les is awesome, what he does with the instrument is like what hendrix did with an electric guitar. no one else plays like him....
flea is a funk bassist, he's good cause he's in the chilli's, but im sure there are 100's of other funk bassist that no one knows about who are better.
the bass is always there. you just really have to listen for it to appriciate it.+--+-Official Upcoming Australasian Tour: Member No.5-+--+

Velvet Rope wrote:Ok, now. I just have one simple question: why are bass guitarists always set in the "back" of the show, almost NEVER get a solo in a song, and are just thought of as an accessorie? just someone please post to this and keep it going. Thanks.
'cause they totally are! Bass players are even more replaceable than drummers..... think of Jimi Hendrix picking Noel Redding for LOOKING LIKE BOB DYLAN
I'm jest kidding btw! I just think it's funny how much shit bass players seem to get... A lot of times people think bass is frickin easy ( a lot of times it is... like guitar without chords or solos) but theres no reason not to do interesting hard stuff with bass and great bassists are every bit as awesome and impressive as good guitarists and stuff.....
Guitars basically have the solo market corneres, and when you've already got two guys and a drumset, there's just not much spotlight left for the poor bass player. :(everything=3
