you can't go wrong with Guided by Voices.

Geronimo is also a band on the rise http://www.myspace.com/geronimonow
They are an aquired taste however.
    Which came first,
the bad idea or me befallen by it?

Anything from Coheed & Cambria. I've just discovered them myself, nobody's ever heard of them here in Belgium, but they're really really great. And Strapping Young Lad, the drummer kicks ass!!!
I tell people I have the heart of a small girl, than I tell them it's in a jar on my desk.

check out the NPR music pages many of the bands you mention are the bands they feature, including complete live concerts archives.

Sticking with your Canadian theme, here are a few singer/songwriters you might want to check out:

Kathleen Edwards (Great songs, whip-smart lyrics, and a dirty mouth. What's not to love?)

Joel Plaskett (his album "La De Da" is one of my favorite records of the last 10 years)

Chris Brown & Kate Fenner (also check out Kate's solo album "Horses & Burning Cars". That woman can sing me to sleep anytime she wants)

Ron Sexsmith (no explanation needed. I swear this dude writes melodies in his sleep)

The Weakerthans (my favorite Canadian indie band, and the only punk-rock/power pop/alt-country folk band I know of. John K. Samson gives Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Gordon Downie a run for their money as one of the greatest lyricist/songwriters this country has ever produced. It's been 3 years since their last album "Reconstruction Site", and I'm still waiting for a follow-up, but I have no doubt it will be brilliant as always.

Cuff the Duke (seamlessly mixing rock, pop, and alt-country into a deliciously original stew. Check out their 2nd self-titled album. It's good stuff.

C'mon (the latest project from Toronto indie-rock guru Ian Blurton. It's loud, it's heavy, it's stubbornly old-school, and it'll kick your ass. This band makes Woflmother look like a bunch of sissies.

    all GREAT suggestions.....

Love Kathleen Edwards - have both her albums (Lone Wolf, Hockey Skates and Mercury are my personal favs)

Love Ron Sexsmith - have ALL his albums, the new one is GREAT (Other Songs is my favourite album though)...when you can site Bob Dylan and Elvis Costello as fans you know youre doing somethin right

Love Joel Plaskett - was a HUGE Thrush Hermit fan and he has just gotten better with age

Saw Cuff The Duke open for Hayden (probably my favourite singer/songwriter - him or Sarah Harmer) on his last tour...they were GREAT, but I havent looked into them since

I've heard great tings about Chris Brown & Kate Fenner (from Sarah Harmer) -I plan on checking them out SOON

and the Weakerthans are one of my favourite bands.....my list to start this thread could have been a mile long

Guided By Voices is one of those bands that I have heard so many people rave about that its almost too overwhelming to try to get into them at this stage....where to start - its like if you wanted to get into Sonic Youth now, so many albums that are all great....if you do like them its gonna send ya straight to the poor house. That being said - they will be added to my "CD's I NEED list"....which album should I try first

go with their best of - "human amusements at hourly rates". It has a good mix of new and old GBV.

Have you checked out Wintersleep yet? http://www.wintersleep.com

I checked them out awhile back based on a recommendation made to me on another thread.....they were really good. Wasnt crazy about the vocals at first, again (same story with Sylvie)....and that yelling bit in "Orca" kinda turned me off. I guess I'm picky about vocalists....they dont necessarily need to be great singers (i LOVE Pavement - for example) but....

i went back to listen to them while typing this response...hence the unfinished sentence above...and Faithful Guide is a GREAT song - perhaps I need to give them some more time

Perfect - a best of.....dont usually go for "best of" CDs (most of the bands I really like write albums that are meant to be listened to as full albums), but it seems like a good place to begin a journey in a case like this

it is. you will most likely end up buying some of their other records anyways, so it's better to know a few songs from each one.

it's the record that got me hooked on them.

Toms great.....I own Alice, Mule Variations and Beautiful Maladies (hows that for proving my "best of" point - kinda a GBV situation where he has so many great albums that I figured I would buy the "best of" album to cover his early stuff and then try to keep up with his more recent catalogue)....I love all the stuff I have - Time and House Where Nobody Lives give me chills

The New Pornogrpahers. All of their albums are supreme, though I'd start with "Mass Romantic."

    M. Ward. Mentioned already a couple times but I will mention him again because he's so fucking talented. Check out "Transistor Radio."

Pinback. Also another band where everything they've done is awesome. Try out the album, "Blue Screen Life."

Who isn't! I've been lucky enough to be in her presence twice. Way back when "Furance Room Lullaby" was released, she played a small club show here in Calgary at a place called The Republik, and it still stands as one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. She's definitely got the most magnificent pipes in indie-rock. Her voice absolutely fills a room, and I get goosebumps every time.

The second time I saw her was at this year's Sasquatch Festival. We got to see her play about 4 songs before the weather gods unleashed the hail storm of the century, which put a stop to the show (the stage crew had to sweep all the snow off the stage, and make sure none of the musicians would get electrocuted). I was pretty bummed that her set was cut short, and I think a lot of the other musicians were bummed as well. The Hip were the first band on after the storm ended, and at the end of their performance, Gord Downie dedicated their set to Neko Case. I thought that was pretty classy.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

  • Noticed you put Ween on there, did you hear of RANA and/or Scott Metzger? He is fucking amazing, I just saw him for the 1st time last week with "Bustle in Your Hedgerow", Dave Dreiwitz of Ween plays the base in that band. RANA is playing CB-GBs in 2 weeks and Scott is back in the band (he was in Particle earlier in the year, but apparently quit them right before Lollapalooza).

btw- here is a link to my write up on this show over on the Tool message board, check out the links in that thread to jambase articles:

read your write up....I can't stand Zeppelin - not sure that I'd be into a Zeppelin cover band, do they do straight covers of Zep songs or do they try and make them good??

  • I was at that Bustle show...INCREDIBLE! I'm not a HUGE zep fan, but I def. like em...it was all instrumental and definitely done in their own style. Joe Russo and Marco Benevento are incredible musicians, as is Metzger of course. He left Particle to move home to NY to be near his family, as his mother is sick. I don't blame him either, L.A ain't all that imo. Metzger's a great guy though, I wish I would have gotten a chance to know him better when he was in Particle(I work with these guys). I was disapointed when I heard he wasn't going to be at that show...but his replacement more than brought it!

And wasn't that 18 year old guitarist incredible! I met her backstage after her performance and she was very humble. I think we'lll be seeing her in the near future.

For a somewhat new direction, I'd suggest The Gossip. Worth at least checking out some snippets of their music on myspace or something. Anyway, they're a great Portland band.
