Yes that would be what I'd say, but I guess it depends on peoples' ages. Many are saying the Stones logo is more recognizable, but I wonder if that's true to the under 20 crowd? And for NIN, would it be true for the over 50 crowd? Probably not I think.

iron maiden's typestyle is pretty well known though - especially as the band have never changed it. if you are going to change logos, do it with every release - unlike metallica who stuck with their 'classic' style until load then they changed it which buggered everything up (including the music)!

Surprised it took as long to be mentioned on this board as it did. Nice call by all who pointed it out.

I thought the man who created the logo was Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol did the Sticky Fingers album cover with the zipper on the front. I remember being in fourth grade and someone brought the album to school and a few of us took turns zipping it up and down. We thought it was so cool.
My top three were Stones (tongue), Dead (skull) and Zeppelin (angel), but the only one that I've never personally been asked about was the Stones one. I'd definitely say it's the most universal.
Edit: One more that is fairly recognizable, but nowhere near as much as the other three mentioned above, but still not mentioned yet on this list, is the smashing pumpkins.....the SP in the heart..... http://www.smashingpumpkins.com/profile/drsaamah

The symbol is the logo of Led Zeppelin's record label formed in 1973 called Swan Song. Zeppelin started their own record label so they could sign other artists with whom they felt a love for. The most famous of other Swan Song artists were Maggie Bell and Bad Company. After Zeppelin disbanded in 1980, you can still see the Icarus (Swan Song) logo on albums from 'The Firm' (with Jimmy Page and Paul Rogers from Bad Co.) and the first 3 solo albums from Robert Plant.
The symbol is taken from a 19th century painting by William Rimmer of Apollo, the Sun God. It has, according to Robert Plant been transformed into a formation of Icarus. The stunning original painting can be found in the Museum Of Fine Arts, in Boston.
There's no info on why Zeppelin chose that particular symbol as their logo.

It is time to admit that we used to rock like hurricanes. It is time to run for the hills and go round and round. It is time for us to shout at the devil. We've got the right to choose it, there ain't no way we'll lose it, and we're not gonna take it anymore.

Black Flag- 4 bars. Perfect logo for a punk/hardcore band. Silly but somehow menacing
