I like the Verve's version better as well, maybe thats because the Stones never recorded a song called Bittersweet Symphony.

    From wikipedia-
Although the song's lyrics were written by Verve vocalist, Richard Ashcroft, it is also credited to Keith Richards and Mick Jagger because the song uses the Andrew Oldham Orchestra recording of The Rolling Stones' 1965 song, "The Last Time" as its foundation.

Your first sentence made me laugh out loud.

I don't listen to The Dead that much anymore but actully like Sublime's cover of Scarlet Begonias better than the orginal.

I like the Indigo Girls cover of "Uncle John's Band" better than the original and Counting Crows cover of "Friend of the Devil" as well. To be fair, I am not a dead fan and did not hear the originals of those songs until after I heard the covers.

Is Fiona Apple's version playing over the credits of "Pleasentville"? I walked in the other day and my wife had just watched it and I heard the song and stopped to figure out what song it was. If it was, I agree her version is better than the Beatles.

    yes it's her.

and i like her version because it's more mellow and slow than the original.

speaking of Bruce Springsteen covers, Rage Against the Machine doing Ghost of Tom Joad is pretty awesome.

Good call. Lot's of good Lenoard Cohen covers. Billy Joel does a pretty good version of "Light as the Breeze".

Where did you sleep last night is credited as being written by Hudie Ledbetter or as he is commonly known Leadbelly. His version is awesome if you like folk music.
I agree on the Johnny Cash "hurt" cover- absolutely amazing.

I like Nirvana's cover of Lake of Fire, originally by the Meat Puppets I believe. I also like Rage's cover of The Ghost of Tom Joad.

I gotta disagree with the Crown of Thorns cover though, which might be controversial. Andy Wood's vocal register fits the song perfectly imo and it sounds like Eddie has to try too hard and sounds a little forced when singing it.

Eddie Vedder and Beck doing Sleepless Nights, who Eddie credits the Everly Brothers for. Also Eddie and Beck doing Little Hands, original by Alexander "Skip" Spence.

Although if I had to stick with studio only, I'd go with

cover: Harry Nilsson- Many Rivers To Cross
Original: Jimmy Cliff- Many Rivers To Cross

    I Can't Quit You Babe

Led Zeppelin's cover of a Willie Dixon song

kicks ass all the way home
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green
