Exactly what the title says...name some songs that bands have covered (in the studio) which you think are better than the original recording.

I know this is gonna be a topic with alot of arguements but i'll start

Original:Bob dylan - Knocking on heavens door

Cover:Guns N Roses - Knocking on heavens door
"Be what you want to be, see what you came to see"

i know everyone HATES Last Kiss, but hearing the original might make you appricate it more. i heard it at a block party and it sucks. the guy sings it all happily as if to say "Hooray! my girlfriend is dead!" Seriously, PJ's version is better.......but if i don't hear it for the rest of my life, i'll be fine.

also, and some people might hate on me for this, but i enjoy Metallica's cover of Turn the Page more then Seger's original

Very true. Most of the examples that come to mind at first are dylan originals but no one said this has to be fair.

I'll throw another very huge one out there

Original: Bruce Springsteen - Blinded By The Light

Cover: Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Blinded By The Light

Side note:i do not agree with metallica's Turn the page being better than seger's

I personally like Corgan's Landslide better than Stevie Nicks...

just so we can get this right. springsteen had the music and the chorus down when he handed this to patti smith. he thought it would better suit her. she listened to it and despite misgivings of using such a well known artist's work, she wrote the verse words in one night.
so if you're gonna attribute this song to springsteen please do so to patti smith as well.
though i love both springsteen and patti smith, to me this will always be patti smith's song.

I like the Verve's version better as well, maybe thats because the Stones never recorded a song called Bittersweet Symphony.

    From wikipedia-
Although the song's lyrics were written by Verve vocalist, Richard Ashcroft, it is also credited to Keith Richards and Mick Jagger because the song uses the Andrew Oldham Orchestra recording of The Rolling Stones' 1965 song, "The Last Time" as its foundation.

  • Dylan: All Along the Watchtower...covered a million times, but just about every Jimi Hendrix version trumps all.

Outkast: Ms. Jackson...The Vines turned this into such an incrdible, dark tune...gives me chills actually.

the only Dylan cover that sounds better than the original is All Along the Watchtower. A lot of artists have successfully pussified his songs and stripped the life out of them for top 40 radio.

cover - Moby: That's When I reach for My Revolver
    original - Mission of Burma

    cover - Metallica: Astronomy
    original - Blue Oyster Cult

    cover - NIN: Dead Souls
    original - Joy Division
