i don't care all that much about babyshambles so i don't really know why i'm even defending them... i lost a LOT of respect for pete doherty in the recent months...
but at least respect different opinions...

i think this is what gets me. it's not enough that x band doesnt appeal to someone. they they feel the need to validate themselves and their opinion by labelling them no-talent hacks or something and claiming that anyone who likes them must be mindless followers of the press. ive never listened to the libertines, dont know a thing about them. but as you said, if they're getting people this riled up, there must be a reason so now i want to check them out.

it's like some people feel the need to trash anything that is considered popular at the moment. when the strokes are in, they hate on the strokes to be cool (yet ironically when ed starts saying how much he loves them the haters get quiet). i like oasis, i can see why not everyone does but i can't see why anyone would say they're a no talent worthless band that nobody should ever listen to unless they're sheep. that's pretty high and mighty of them. at the same time, i dont much care for radiohead. i have my views on their music and it just doesnt appeal to me. but i can see why some people might enjoy it.

everyone's got their preferences, i just think a little more respect for differences in opinion is in order, on both sides.

I know what you mean. Occasionally i will say a negative comment about a band, but i honestly couldnt be bothered attacking people's personal opinions on them.

I'd rather just listen to any music that i happen to like and let other people do the same.

Anyone who can write the line "if you've lost your faith in love and music then the end won't be long, cuz if it's gone for you I too may lose it and that would be wrong" is worth a listen. The Libertines debut album is brilliant. Get it as soon as you can.

I really like the Libertines stuff. Its hard not to get annoyed with the media tabloid stuff, but they have some great music on their albums. Definitely worth picking up, IMO.

I love that song. 'music when the lights go out' on the self titled album is great as well.

"is it cruel to be kind not to speak my mind and to lie to you rather than hurt you
well ill confess all of my sins after several large gins but still ill hide from you, hide whats
    inside from you
and alarm bells ring, when you say your heart still sings when your with me, oh darling please forgive me,
but i no longer hear the music oh no no no no

and all the memories of the pubs and the clubs, and the drugs and the tubs we shared together
    will stay with me forever..
but all the highs and the lows and the to's and the fro's they left me dizzy oh wont you please
    forgive me..."

For all his problems i still love his song writing.

  • Gosh this is a popular thread!

OK, so I've thought about it, and I am sorry for some of the harsh words up top. I'm an opinionated *&^%$)_) sometimes, and I splurt off things, and then regret them later.

Acting all 'no one is allowed to like the Libertines' and stuff is ridiculous, and I'm sorry to whoever I was rude to about it (I'm sure there are a couple of you, and I'm sorry). I'm passionate about music, that's all.

As to my unadulterated, yet un-rude opinion: I just can't tell the wood from the trees (or the press from the music) when it comes to Pete Doherty. It is very strange how many people herald him as a rock god in the UK on a par with Cobain, when many of us hadn't heard of him a year ago. I do try my best to be 'OK, fair enough', but I don't get it. I saw a dvd called something like Pete Doherty: Rock Legend' in a shop the other day, and the blurb on the back talked of him as if he was a 75 year old blues legend worthy of a life time achievement award. To be honest, my little bro gave me a listen of the Libs on his headphones. It was OK, musically. But I can't past the fact that he was into LL Cool, Slim Shady and Snoop Dog a year ago. He's just gone to a posh London University, he does that side swipe of his fringe, wears a wavey-haired mullet and a long corduroy jacket and a scarf, and talks about 'new wave' like it only started happening last week. Now the Libs, Baby Shambles and DPT are what is COOL. What's next?

Again. I didn't mean to cause any offence. Reasoned debate is good.

People have to stop worrying about how many drugs Pete will take this night or how many times he can get arrested in a week and just listen to the music. That's what it's all about anyways,

Agreed 100% and i have yet to get a chance to listen to anything from him. I can care less what kinda of drugs he does as long as hes puting out music that i like to listen to. It's your life. Do whatcha want. Drugs sometimes inspire great music. Not that i recommend you go stick a neddle in you.

I wouldnt encourage anyone to do drugs at all, but if i was gonna stop listening to musicians who had at some stage used drugs, my music collection would be pretty shit.

Babyshambles are about to record their follow up album and I must say (I may be biased cuz I loved DIA) the tracklist that they've said it would be looks very good.

And Dirty Pretty Things' debut album is top notch in my book, some catchy songs with some above average lyrics.

neither are as good as UTB though

The follow up album was never actually confirmed, they have a 5 track ep due out very soon which i have heard and its pretty good. Couple of great tracks, worth picking up for the song Sedative alone in my opinion.

'What a Waster' and 'Can't stand me now' are 2 good songs from the Libertines.

And they also describe my feelings about that Pete guy...

  • He played gigs for his fans in his living room for drug money...honestly, I just don't get the drug hype/reality of this guy...when I hear the Libertines, all I hear is beautiful, clean, wonderful pop music, as pure as it should be...they should be proud as hell for that musical contribution...not fucking it all away...but that said, they are one of my absolute favorites...ORIGINAL POSTER: give them a shot...
