Give the band Mono a listen - they are pretty nice in ways similar to the ones you've listed as 'likes' - yet pretty different as well. More like ambient post-rock type of stuff...I recently bought 'You Are There' and really like it. Good stuff to work to while on the computer.

I am not sure you'd get the full impression of them from samples on iTunes as their songs are longer and drawn out. Fwiw, I love Opeth too -- NIN, PJ, Tool...

how heavy do you want it?

two bands i draw your attention to are:

    the butterfly effect

    tourette's

both are australian. tourette's are the heavier of the two. plus their singer is a girl. and she just knocks my socks off. she's awesome.

This thread made me flash on a conversation I caught part of while I was strolling through the mall last night:

Dude #1: "Oh yeah, fuck yeah...they are the heaviest for sure!"
Dude #2: "Fuck yes...H.I.M. is totally heavy!"

It made me laugh. Heavy is indeed in the ears of the beholder.

I'd like some recommendations, as well. Shadows Fall & Lamb of God are decent new metal.

I'm tired of bands rapping over fourth-rate Pantera riffs.
Do you remember Rock & Roll Radio?

F*&K yeah, Goatwhore!!! We played with them a few times and they are bad-ass!! The drummer is insane, if you like them you should like Soilent Green (Ben - the singer's other older band) they arent as crazy death metal like, but they are still great.

I also saw some one mentioned Candiria, they are one of the best bands on the planet (aside from PJ of course)
If you like crazy jazz influenced metal, then they are def worth checking out...

I guess they aren't death metal like Entombed, At The Gates or Morbid Angel but SYL is pretty fucking heavy. Let's just call it metal.
