Matchbox Twenty. I've loved everything they've done so far
    "I'm a thief, and I dig it"
  • is the hold steady album really due out next year? they played a few new songs at the show i went to a month ago and they were all excellent. that definitely goes on my list.
Yep! And I agree, the new songs are great! I think they played 4 or 5 new ones when I saw them in Minneapolis last month.

Pitchfork: Craig, tell me a little bit about the progress on the new record. I read somewhere you had some instrumental tracks on your iPod, and you were working on lyrics...

Finn: Well, it's more than instrumental. We went in and we did 14 songs demoed. We've been playing four or five of them live. We're going to introduce more during the tour. Some are pretty well done; some are really just, I don't even have words for. So it kind of runs the gamut. Some, I went in and started singing stuff when I didn't have it, and now it's maddening because I've written real lyrics and I try to sing them over the bad lyrics.

It's gone pretty well. It's pretty weird with modern technology. I mean, playing songs live is like releasing them in some ways. Because all of a sudden, now they're on YouTube or whatever. I think we just kind of had to let go of that. The songs will change. We're likely to work with [Boys and Girls in America producer] John Agnello again. And I know he'll chop them up-- he'll say like "That bridge isn't working." So they will change, and those will just be documents of how they evolved, I guess.

Pitchfork: Do you have a timeline for getting that record done?

Finn: I think we'd like to start recording in the middle of December and end in February or something. Of course the date gets out of your hands, but I'd like to see it in the second quarter of 2008. God that's the worst thing I've ever... second quarter of 08? Last night, I woke up in the middle of the the night and I got two really good things. So it's coming in spurts, you know?
"I'll do whatever the song dictates - if it doesn't need a real lead, then I won't do one. But if it does, then I'll fuckin' go off." - Mike

"Japan is awesome; the fans there knew all the words to all the songs...at least phonetically." - Stone

"I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version." - EV

I don't really know many albums that are coming out next year, but one I heard about this week, which was mentioned here once is Kathleen Edwards, I am looking forward to that now that I know about it.

Oh and if The Verve are going be putting one out now that they played some shows, that would be very cool, I hope they do. Is that fact or wishful thinking by the way?
I know someday you will have a beautiful Life

The band announced they would tour in November 2007, and are also set to release an album in early 2008.
    ....
On October 15th, bass player Simon Jones revealed a number of new song titles the band had recorded since reforming. They include "Sit and Wonder", "Judas", "Appalachian Springs", "Mona Lisa" and "Rather Be".

I hope it's not the usual rumor, but I have read on various sites that they are just finishing up in the studio. And they just played a live show in the UK.

Here's a video of Portishead performing one of their new songs, "Mystic". The audio's a bit distorted but I can tell it's going to be great once I hear the studio version.
