You guys are making the this album out to be way better than it is. IMO it doesnt touch "because of the times". There are a couple good tunes but the album overall is a B- at best. I will be at webster hall though and it will rock.
I LOVE BOTT, but this album is really growing on me the more that I listen to it

I agree....
It starts out with 3 killer songs and realy drops off. They need to rock a little more on the tail end of the album

Pitchfork agrees with you. Not kind.
"Next thing you know, "Sex on Fire" starts and Kings of Leon's fourth album has peaked after seven minutes. Surely, we can do better for the platonic ideal of a rock band than four guys gunning for a spot rightfully inhabited by My Morning Jacket but instead coming up with the best songs 3 Doors Down never wrote."

my friend just sent me that... pretty much what i would expect from pitchfork  fuckin indie wannabe hipsters.... theyd probably have plenty of good things to say if no one knew who KOL were
wow alot of people are ripping on this new album ( on other sites like youtube), but thats what people do i guess...what i've heard so far i love.
Cant wait for the album.
Who cares if the world is going down the toilet? Eddie Vedder got his mojo back!
USE SOMEBODY - sounded to me today like it should be the new theme song for 'Friends' or '90210' or something along those lines, don't you think?
you mean that in a good way? Cause I agree, but that sums up why this album isn't very good.
I love all previous KOL albums, one of my favorite bands, but the first three songs on 'Only By The night' are amazing, and then nothing! Just boring song after boring song.
And just for the record, Pitchfork has never liked KOL, even Youth and Young Manhood got a bad review, so I'm not surprised they're ripping this album extra hard.
I have heard most of the new album on lastfm. While I made
sure not to listen to any of the songs in their entirety, I have a strong
feeling that I will be disappointed with Only By the Night.
1) Youth and Young Manhood was a great first album for such young guys, and the next two albums were classics that were completely different from each other; I loved Aha Shake and Because of the Times on first listen. I was shocked that America ignored both those albums.
2) It's only been a year and a half since Because of the Times. Kind of rushed?
3) I know the guys want to get their just due in the USA. I'm afraid they may have watered down their sound to appeal to the masses.
4) None of the songs I've heard were standouts. Sex On Fire is particularly a letdown because it sounds as if it's on a loop. KOL songs rule because they have so many different parts to them. Sex On Fire repeats itself throughout. Furthermore, the sound throughout the album is the same. Because of the Times and Aha Shake had varied moods throughout the albums.
I hope the album grows on me. That would be an awsome surprise.

This album is a "grower" as they say. Believe me, when you listen to it a few more times all the way through you'll come to like some of it. Definitely isn't as good as BOTT but there are still some very very good songs on it.
I pledge to you a government that will not only work well, but wisely, its ability to act tempered by prudence, and its willingness to do good, balanced by the knowledge that government is never more dangerous than when our desire to have it help us blinds us to its great power to harm us.

I appreciate the fact that KOL is not being lazy and/or predictable and repetative. Youth and Aha are genius and moments in their time. Past.
Although you wouldn't know it by those daily juvenile videos that they're putting out, everyone's got to grow up and they're doing just that, musically. If all you want is southern rock at a breakneck pace, Youth & Aha are always there for you. I'll take those plus the progress and maturity of OBTN.
By the way, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I've been a huge KOL supporter through their first three albums... If I don't think their new record is up to snuff I'm going to call them out. That's a fan's right. I'm still going to buy the record and judge it for myself. I hope it is an album that grows on you, those are the best. I just have fears that it'll sound less bold, more watered down, more commercial, and rushed. I hope I'm wrong. That would be fantastic.
OK I'm going to be a bit of an asshole but KOL basically.....sucks.
How many threads do we need about this band? They not only sound like a typical mainstream teeny bopper rock band but LOOK like one too. I tried getting in this band a bunch of times, in fact I just tried once more before deciding to post this. But not to my surprise, I did not like what I was hearing.
Look to the right of the video, that ad. They look like fall out boy. Nice screams by the singer too. It seems the whole song is basically a chorus, filled with catchy hooks. Lame

Only is a good way! I do think they compromised a bit on this baby, but I love them no less, and I can't wait to see this one live!

Sorry guys, Kings of Leon flat out sucks.
I can't believe you referred to them as a "typical mainstream teeny bopper band" then posted a link to Charmer - yeah a really typical mainstream teeny bopper song what with all that screaming........
They might look like FOB (which I personally don't think they do), but they sound nothing like them. And who cares what they look like anyway?
OK, here's your last chance for redemption, if you don't like this song, your opinion means nowt!!!!
Closer is one of the best songs I've heard in a long time...I love it! Enjoying the album as a whole too, and looking forward to Oct 12--San Diego HOB :-)

it's an interesting album I love closer and manhattan. Use somebody and be somebody are pretty good also but I can't help but notice it's no where near their first 3 albums. I do prefer the 'southern' version of KOL.
I'm just flying around the other side of the world to say I love you

I really like this album because it actually kinda challenges me. I'm struggling to fully grasp what their going for, and that's actually getting me into it even more. Every time I listen to it another piece falls into place.
It's an interesting album. It seems as though a lot of the songs refer to their youth as an adult would look back on their past experiences. It deals with certain elements of life before fame (Manhattan, Seventeen, I Want You, Closer), as they were working towards fame (Be Somebody, Crawl), and how fame changed everything once they got it (Use Somebody, Sex On Fire, Revelry, Notion, Cold Desert).
Musically, it seems they're trying to give us an idea of the vibe of their hometown and what their home life is like. And it's not the party-hard kinda home life, but the hang out in the backyard at 1 am drinking beers and playing guitar kinda home life. This is the reason it's a more mellow album, as opposed to Youth And Young Manhood and Aha Shake Heartbreak, which were party albums. There's also a kind of musical sadness in the album, like going home is bittersweet. They like being home, but also find it kind of depressing and lonely, which I can relate to myself.
This album kinda builds on a theme first seen in the song Talihina Sky from Youth And Young Manhood, which deals with this same theme of home being bittersweet. It's a beautiful, comforting, and often-missed place, but at the same time it's depressing, lonely, and imprisoning. They want to leave but miss it once they're gone. And it's still an inherent part of them, a part that they'll never be rid of, that gives them inspiration. It's this theme that I really like about this album because I personally relate to it a lot.
I love this album.

Evidently. I just read their review of BOTT: http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/42085-kings-of-leon-because-of-the-times Wow, are they trying to rival NME in the art of pretentiousness? It reads more like a piece of fiction than a music review, shit fiction at that. You begin to wonder if these people are even capable of enjoying music.

I can't understand how anyone can say "it's not a good album" !!
It's not up to us to say what's good or bad, but mearly what we like & don't like.
If you like the album, then listen & enjoy. I know I will !
If not, then don't and listen to something else!
Just cool it with the negativity. It's all about opinion.
