    amen.
  • I listened to the album for the first time last night when I went to bed, and then again this morning on the bus ride to work.

So far I'm digging it, although some of the songs are very different to what the band have done before. But i'm grateful for that, because it's always good to try new things.

Saying that, I think '17' is pretty awful. Revelry is also a bit subpar but might grow on me. The rest is very good.

I've listened to it 10 times now. I hope I don't "play it out" even before it is officially released :).

    Okay, here's my breakdown.

Closer - love the spacey sound to this. Almost as good as Knocked Up in terms of album openers.

Crawl - another great one. Suck a badass riff. Very grungey.

Sex On Fire - love it, played it to death though.

Use Somebody - this is great as well but I always pictured it better in my head when I was listening to the snippet we heard in those home videos. Doesn't sound as epic.

Manhattan - sounds waaaay too similar to Fans but this is still a quality track.

Revelry - this is where the album slips. Just a boring track.

17 - worst song on the album, Christmas bells sound a bit out of place.

Notion - picks up the pace a bit. Love the vocals in this song.

    I Want You - rubbish

Be Somebody - one of my favourites on the album, love the drumming and the sudden upbeat chorus.

Cold Desert - Eh, this is just a boring album closer IMO. They needed a really hard rocking song.

So yeah this album is good, not amazing though. Caleb needs to reign in his voice a bit. The songs are starting to blend into each other becuase his vocals all sound very similar on all of them. But if that's his style, then cool.
  • I fucking love Notion.

I kind of get where you are coming from in terms of a couple of the tracks, but I don't think anything is unlistenable, and there are some WICKED songs on there. I think Closer is damn near genius, and I actually found Use Somebody to live up to my expectations, I especially love the bridge.

I don't think this has been quite the same leap in progress that BOTT was from the previous record, but it's still an incredibly solid record.
  • Anyone hook me up with a link? The last one is deleted :(:(:(

Yeah I do like Use Somebody. I think I just had unrealistically high expectations. The "I hope it's gonna make you notice..." bit gives me chills.

Need to find the lyrics for that actually. Sounds like a situation that I can relate to.

Yeah that line gave me the chills too, and the "someone like me" part - I think we've all been there........ I think this song is really going to do a lot for them, it's got hit single written all over it.

Hope so, although Sex On Fire seems to be doing quite well also. Number 1 on iTunes, not too shabby.

    That UK Itunes or US?
  • I am really digging the new album. I have listened to it quite a few times now and I am liking more every time I hear it. The only thing I am a little disappointed with is that there only a couple rockers. Most are mid to slower tempo songs.

Looking forward to seeing them at the end of Oct.

Ah, doesn't do it for me. Because of the Times was an amazing record, but this kinda pales in comparison. The balance of tracks isn't there and the riffs aren't nearly as catchy. Maybe it'll grow, but it's too early to say yet. Will have to wait and see...

  • I've had a hard time getting into Kings of Leon, BUT..

This new album has me HOOKED! First Sex on Fire, now Closer is stuck in my thoughts.. great stuff.

The balance isn't there... too similar of tempos, styles and approach.... it's a digression from BOTT.... I anticipated evolution but retaining the freshness that has been present on their first three albums and for that to continue....You can hear this in any number of bands out there.... I'm all for evolution, but not when it comes to losing touch of who you are and where your roots are. That said, KOL needs a road map.

Prior to hearing the whole album I was sold on Crawl. Sex on Fire seemed the necessary radio hit on this one, and was not impressive. Turns out it's the second best song on the album behind Crawl and in front of Closer... I agree with the earlier poster... the second half lacks...

The maudlin lyrics that call to mind everything that is horrible about pop rock radio today; an over-experimentation with noise... MTV reports Caleb wanted to make his vocals more decipherable, and it wrote that was one of the strengths... I agree. I know you are talking about sex drugs and rock and roll, but on YYM, ASH and BOTT you couched it in innuendo and imagery... Now oyu just tell us....

Then there is the blow-dried hair.

Call it conspiracy theory or whatever, but I like to think about the album they did make, and where in the vaults of a record company it now lies. Everything about OBTN screams "We rushed this sucka out. Come see us play and make us big in America." Oh to have taken the other fork in the road.

I looked forward to this album with much anticipation but..... Will it get better? Don't know.

I do know I played it again today-- this time in the car and it's not any better driving -- and when I got to Manhattan I had to pull it out and throw in Aha and searched for what worked about that album vs OBTN.

I haven't found it yet. I have faith in all of you for having found something to grab hold of and I will continue to look for that. Maybe my expectations were too high...

    Got my copy last night!

Listened to it about 6 times already, and I think it's awesome. Maybe not up there with Because of the Times, but that album's still furiously working it's way towards my top ten!!

When I heard Sex On Fire on the radio, I wasn't all that impressed, but as part of the album, it sounds great.

One problem I've had with KoL, even though I love the music, is that Caleb's voice can sometimes sound samey from track to track!
But I think his voice has a new edge on this album.

It's deffo gonna grow on me in the weeks to come.

  • The album as a whole is great but I could have done without Revelry and 17.
  • The drums are disappointing to say the least. I'm not saying they suck, it's just that I can't bloody hear them...

I agree with your comment on tempos, but I think what is most missing is a sense of the energy their other records have. I was hooked on BOTT after the first verse of Knocked Up. That is a slow song that just builds up as it goes. I've listened to OBTN four times now and the first time through I kept waiting for it to grab me. It took me to third listen to sort of get it.

I think Crawl and Be Somebody are the best tracks. Sex on Fire and Use Somebody are good and I think those two and Manhattan might have potential to be better live. Notion is kind of a diamond in the rough. The rest kind of make me sleepy.

I'm hoping that in five years or so I'll be at one of their shows and they'll play Closer or I Want You and it will be kind of like when Pearl Jam breaks out songs like Tremor Christ or Ghost and I'll be able to say, "Cool, they never play these songs."

  • Everything is mid-tempo. There's nothing particularly fast or slow. Regardless of the songs themselves, it gets a tad boring for lack of change. But with that said it is growing on me. Be Somebody is a great tune!

use somebody is fucking epic. one of the best songs they have imo.

I'm loving this song. Although . . . gasp . . . . it almost sounds like an Angels and Airwaves song ;):D
    NERDS!
  • I gotta confess: people on this message board got me hooked up on KOL (thanks a lot guys:)). Although their first two records... I think I will need some time for them to grow on me.

But BOTT was an instant blowaway for me. And now OBTN... What can I say, I fucking love this record!!!
However Crawl and Sex On Fire are not that interesting for me because they were kinda overplayed.
Gotta agree with the previous posters, I too could live without 17, Revelry, Notion and I want You. On the whole it's a great record, not as great as the previous one but still great.
    Don't go messing with machoes!
  • You guys are making the this album out to be way better than it is. IMO it doesnt touch "because of the times". There are a couple good tunes but the album overall is a B- at best. I will be at webster hall though and it will rock.
