  • This year some of my top records include...

    QOTSA - Era Vulgaris
    Spoon - Gagagagagaggagaga
    Wilco - Sky Blue Sky
    Kanye West - Graduation
Omar Rodriguez Lopez - Se Dice Bisoniste, No Bufalo

Wow, Kanye. He is the only Hip-Artist I listen to. Wilco is good also. I wasn't trying to start a cyber fight with you or anything. BTW, you "location" is funny as heck. pEACE

No disrespect, but if those are the kind of artists you listen to, it isn't really a surprise you don't like the foos. Kind of like me commenting on the new Beyonce album or something? See for a pop-rock album, I would say the new one is anything but generic (ok the pretender isn't that original) I really think they are pushing their boundaries here.

"Pushing the boundaries" and "Pop rock" don't really fit together...

Sure, it's new ground for the foos, but it isn't original. Plenty of other bands have done the same kinda songs before, and done the same kinda things a lot better. I'll listen to it because I like foo, but honestly (no pun intended) it's not good enough at anything to be a record I'll stick with in months/years to come.
When there are bands who do it better what is the point of listening to a pop rock jack of all trades?

I disagree, despite its many different styles I think it's a very cohesive record. The songs all work well together, and for me that is the sign of a good band. They tried it on their last album and it was a bit of a mess, this time they distilled everything that is good about them, pushed themselves to try some new things and came up with some really classy songs. And I absolutely disagree that a pop rock band can't push boundaries, as much as I'm not a fan - THE BEATLES!

Yeah, but the Beatles pushed the boundries by writing songs in different styles and different instrumentation. No two Beatles songs sound alike. I'm sorry, but many of the songs on the new Foos records sound exactly like songs from In Your Honor...an album I was not a fan of.

And what songs on the new one sound EXACTLY like songs on In Your Honour? I also wasn't much of a fan of that record, it had a handfull of good songs, but nothing remarkable (Best of You aside). It's weird cause I've never really felt emotionally moved by a foos record, but this one seems to have something different.
  • I guess not exactly, but definitely cut from the same cloth. Try "The Last Song" and "Cheer Up Boys."

So one song?! You're gonna have to do better than that! And for some reason Cheer up Boys reminds me of a beefed up REM (I have no idea why!).

See I could totally understand your comments in context with one of their previous albums, but for a band that have always stuck with their formula, they are pushing themselves to do new things - and even if those things have been done before by other people, I think for example, that Home is a very moving piano ballad by a band I don't associate with piano ballads.

What ever. I'm not trying to convince you. I just don't enjoy the album. Simple as that. I think One By On has been better than the last two by far.

But at the time Beatles were anything but pop rock. Sure they were popular, but they were shaping the genre and had plenty of tunes that were heavier than anything else that was about. It was a very different world musically back then, it doesn't compare.

They were pop rock, at least when they started. And in no way was I comparing The Beatles and Foo Fighters, just challenging the claim that pop bands can't push boundaries.

Ah I was enjoying the banter! If ever an album was in need of some hooks it was One By One. But I guess it was a less conventional record is some respects, and that may appeal to some.

Woah, accuse them of a lot of things, but there is no doubt they are trying out new things on the new album, so 'stale' wouldn't really be the word I would use.

i couldnt get passed song 3. i didnt like the pretender. so predictable....it gets all quiet then, the big chorus comes in. ive listened to it once, yet a thousand times.

i think it is mindless budweiser rock.

i like artsy fartsy bands better. ive said it before and ill say it again.

    foos = poos.

ill be happy when i hear some talent on stage tonight at the new pornographers. youve probably never heard of em

good rock right now equals = YEAH YEAH YEAHS AND KINGS OF LEON, not FOO.

i hated their Live Earth Performance of " is it the best, the best, the best of you???""" how many times do they have to sing that part? i thought they were trying to break the too legit too quit record or something!

Wow..it's hard to find someone who doesn't like The Pretender even a little bit. I think that song is one of their absolute best. What makes it work so well is , yeah it's a driving rock song that the Foos do best, but it has three big hooks. Three. There's the "Keep you in the dark" quiet into, the chorus, and the "who are you" bridge part. How many radio rock songs do you remember having three incredibly instant memorable hooks like that? It's been a while. Great fucking track. Great fucking album.

Oh, and I find Kings of Leon to be incredibly overated.
What I Should Have Said...Was Nothing.

Kings of Leon overrated but the Foo Fighters, noooooo not at all.
Great album??!!! Listen to more music.

i havent heard the new album. after 2 straight crap albums, i lost interest. thus why my post said i have no interest in the new album.

if it's one of their best, i'm definitely not buying the album. i thought it was one of the most boring, cookie-cutter foo singles i ever heard.

im sorta kicking myself for selling my new pornographers tickets... my gf's family is in town that weekend though and i ended up buying tickets to brand new instead. brand new is awesome live, but i've seen them and haven't seen the new pornographers...

But then you can't really accuse it of being stale if you haven't heard it.
  • This album is very good. Eclectic. Satisfying. Juicy.
    ??!

i said the band is stale. 2 straight albums of same old, same old, and a single that is yet still more of the same. i couldn't care less.

And that's it!!! They are more authentic than in the past. Their older ballads were all a little plastic. These are true emotions.
As I heard The Pretender i thought that it will be a typic Foo Album and I was a little bit scared. But as it was said before it has some remarquable great stuff on it... Let it die has this incredible screaming and some hard chords. (Did you ever think of me? You're so consdering! Into Deep, and lost in time, why do you have to go and Let it die, beaitiful vein and bloodshut eyes, why do you have to go and let it die, heart's stone cold and hands are tired, Why do you have to go and let this die...WHY DO YOU HAVE TO GO AND LET THIS DIE??????)
Erase/Replace is loaded with testosterones but has a little bit disappointing chorus. long Road To Ruin leaves you with a big smile. Come alive is a good song, Stranger Things Have Happened is a real good song, very catchy but already has a place n my Hitparade. Cheer Up, Boys gives you some punches than calms down to be become explosive in the Chorus. Summer's End as a very good beginning, a little bit qotsa like..., Ballad of beaconsfield miners is an instrumental song wich deserves it's place on the album. Statues, is some beatles-like, a song my gf will like. But, Honestly is accoustic and than BOOM, it's explosive, great.
Than The Masterpiece HOME!!! It's the best Foo Fighters song I've heard and one of the best in the last time. This song raises the hole album to an exellent one. For me the best Foo Fighters

So exactly what are you contributing to a thread that's asking for an opinion on a particular record, when you haven't even heard it?!

I am not a huge Foo Fighters fan. They don't bother me, but I have always found most of their stuff to be mediocre. However, I listened to the new album today, and wow, this is great stuff. By far their best work. Shocked to be saying that, but after one listen, it's one of my favorite albums of the year (along with Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, The Shins, Soulsavers, Spoon, and Tegan and Sara).
It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.
