Ummmmmmmhh......I need to think about that one.

They sound like; Four guys going into the woods for a weekend of camping.
They set up camp underneath the pine trees and made a bonfire at the lake side. Sitting round it with guitars their feet in the sand. These guys are tripping on their own music and well, there might be some pot involved as well.
Nice spooky sound, Lo-fi recording, I don't know anybody who digs Sonic youth and dislikes Slint

One of my friends keeps telling me to check them out...I really need to pick up this cd, apparently. I'll get on that as soon as I can.

Like Gandalf said to Frodo and co: RUN you fools!!

    Really pick it up A.S.A.P.

And be sure to get Spiderland not Tweeze. Spiderland is the one you want.

I went to the record store a few weeks ago looking for Spiderland, and they were sold out. I'm gonna have to order it. I've heard nothing but great things, though.

It has an awesome cover, too.

    Yeah, hence my little story.

If you're at all into vinyl the band this you need to get it on vinyl.

    On the back it says;
This recording is meant to be listened to on vinyl.

Hahahaha, mine is CD and that works nice too.

I don't have a working record player at the moment so it looks like CD is the best option.

You seem to have some pretty good taste, between this and the Malkmus thread. Ever heard of Wilco?

They are pretty much God. Bought my copy of Spiderland a few months ago. Truly a monumental album. No question.

there's a lot of things i care about in music but maintaining a 13/7 drum beat isn't one of them..

i've tried to get into these guys but it just isn't happening. I can see why people would think they're good for they're skills and being ahead of their time, but i can also see people who think they're glorified because of their short run which makes me see them as a bit over rated as well.

i've listened to spiderland over and over and nothings really grabbed my attention. But if you're into math rock then slint is text book material.

I don't really think their short run as much as their impact on modern experimental/instrumental/alternative music (read: the entire post-rock movement) has lead to the high regard they are held in.

To me, Spiderland is about oppressive riffs, crushing drums, bleak lyrics and crashing crescendos. I find it to convey a real emotion, which is something that a lot of "progressive" and/or math-rock bands usually tend to have a large problem with. It really doesn't seem like a barren set of technique wankery and tricky time signatures, but maybe that is just me.

i think the bleak lyrics is what leaves me astray with these guys and i find it hard to convey and key in on emotions when your songs are mainly whispering spoken words with bouts of shouting...and if thats how the album is going to be sung then i think the music better make up for it, which slint is good at but the lo-fi production takes away from hearing everything that the album could have been especially in terms of dynamic range.

Well, I don't like anyone for being technical, I guess I would be in that group you called math rock though. Still not for the skill, just for the feel. This is an album that if you have an mind that provides you with images easily you can get into. It has such strong moods. I get all sorts of images. And don't say it's the drugs cause I don't smoke any more. Hahahaha
If Tim Burton would be in a band, he'd be in Slint. It's dark and grotesque in it's sound.
I guess the fact that they only made two album and that they were so young does add to their appeal, but I would not call them overrated. And I am curious what music you listen to. I'm sorry for you that you didn't like them, but there's enough other stuff so I guess you didn't lose any sleep over it.

Hahahaha, all the things you just said are like major plus points for me. The whispering makes it so fucking intimate, that it makes me cry when I hear Washer on the wrong moment.

Yeah Spiderland is really fucking awesome. The "I Miss You" at the end of "good Morning Captain" are absolutely soul-crushing
