Just wondering which Irish band or singer people think is the best.I know U2,Thin Lizzy or Rory Gallagher seem like the obvious choice but I have to say Ash are are my absolute favourite ever.Very under-rated band.

Wasn't Christy Moore in Planxty?I heard an Eric Bogle song called Cry of the Hump Back Whale and liked it a lot.

Well, in terms of newish Irish band, Bell X1 (they used to be called Juniper when Damien Rice was their lead singer) are fantastic, beautiful melodies.
The Chalets are really interesting too, it's probably quite a lazy comparison but they remind me a little of the B52s, foxy girls chatting back to boys.
Here's a few videos of them on youtube

Smart arse video for their single Feel the Machine:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_Z95cPQWxw

Live version of Love Punch which features a chorus with the immortal (& irredeemably Irish) line "I know you love me but you're fucking crazy". Wahey! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSH_8lK-Dwk

Christy Moore is of course, a complete legend and he used to be in both Planxty and Moving Hearts.

Ash & Snow Patrol are worth considering too... :)

But you left out Mulligan & O'Hare. Their seminal album "TIttybiscuits" was a musical revelation.

Boomtown Rats had a song or two in their day.

I dunno,I saw them at Oxegen last year and everyone I knew, even those who were big Frames fans, said it was the most boring thing ever.Maybe they just got a bad time or something.

I HATE The Frames, can't help myself - they seem to represent all that's wrong with the maudlin moaning git tradition of Irish singer/songwriters, all angst and no charisma (You can't frickin move in Dublin for bumping into this type of soppy bastard!)

They're eternal underachievers, seemingly content with being big fish in a small pond. That and Glen Hansard appears to have an ego the size of China (although he was good in The Commitments).

Wow,my thoughts exactly.Basically they represent the Irish music scene and all the crappy parts of it.

I don't think we're alone in thinking that either, it's usually a love/hate thing with the Frames. You've got the crazy, wannabe Glen-fucker cult members who still sigh wistfully everytime he segues into that Willy Wonka song from Star, Star and you've got the haters.

    I'm a hater.

But I don't feel good about it :)

Rory gallagher is number one for me. He is the most underrated artist ever Imho. everyone in Ireland has heard at least one Thin Lizzy or U2 song but how many have heard Rory Gallagher? Irish Tour is my favourite Irish album of All Time.
    Lizzy were very good too.
I like the Revs and The Frames of the current lot.
U2 are good too even though Bono acts too cool for my liking.

Well, I can't claim to be any kind of a musician but I did go to college and I didn't like them then either. :)

Anyone for a bit of Jack L? Occasionally dodgy own material but best voice in Ireland/The Universe?!

I used to be heavily into Enya and Clannad. I still like them but don't listen as much as I used to. Van Morrison is Irish I think and he's good. I'm Irish and I'm good but I don't play and instrument or sing. My dog isn't Irish but I was going to name him Seanchai until I discovered an Irish rapper using the name and it ruined it for me. Seanchai...shan-uh-kee...means storyteller. Anyway, I can't name my dog after arapper so I named him after a real storyteller instead...Dashiell as in Hammett. He's a good dog. What are we talking about again?
