I agree with two of them haven't spent a lot of time with sufjan stevens but the other two are pretty rad, my nominations are Mark Lanegan (kind of known at least in these circles) Sould Coughing and the new pornographers. I'm electing to not pick these really obscure or local bands that people have not heard of at all but rather those who are kind of known about but not to the extreme they should be which I think is the purpose of the thread

My Morning Jacket - I know these guys are pretty well known to people around these parts after opening a lot on this current tour, but it seems that outside of music freaks and Pearl Jam freaks, these guys are relatively unknown. Z was starting to grow on me before the Pearl Jam shows, but I was completely blown away seeing them live. Great energy. Great live show. Similar to Pearl Jam in that the songs are actually better live than in the studio. It seems that everybody who hears One Big Holiday seems to dig it. I downloaded their set from Bonnaroo 2005 and it's amazing (http://www.livebonnaroo.com). The version of Lay Low from that show is amazing.

Iron & Wine - I really can't say enough about Iron & Wine, aka Sam Beam. He is nothing like Pearl Jam, but he is nothing short of amazing. Like Nick Drake, he does so much with so little. His more current releases are infinitely more polished than his early releases, but are stellar nonetheless. A couple of his songs, namely Naked As We Came, have appeared on a couple of soundtracks and TV shows. If you get into him, search for his demos. They aren't that hard to find, simply incredible what he does with a couple guitars, a banjo, and a 4-track analog recorder. His style of playing guitar is relatively simple (few chords and primarily open chords at that), but his voice and his lyrics are second to none.

Beulah - They actually broke up a year or two ago, but I still really love these guys. Great summer music. The band has a kind of Cali / Indie pop sound. Their last release, Yoko, is an incredible album. Again, they are nothing like Pearl Jam in terms of musical style. I stumbled onto these guys after reading great reviews for Yoko and was actually a bit surprised how much I enjoyed the album. If you are a fan of 'indie' pop at all, definitely check these guys out, if you haven't already.

Others on the list: Band of Horses, Tegan & Sara, n.Lannon, Islands, Jose Gonzalez.
And some who are a little more popular: The Arcade Fire, The Shins, and Pete Yorn

Iron & Wine is excellent. Trapeeze Swinger is the track that did it for me. Check out the In The Reins ep that has Iron & Wine and Calexico for Sam with a full band.

Speaking of Calexico, I should have mentioned them on my list too. Excellent band, with a bit of spaghetti western feel. Feast of Wire is a good place to start, or the above mentioned In The Reins ep.

I agree with both MMJ and Iron and Wine. Both deserve heaps of praises for their music.

Now, it's funny because I only just heard of Beulah last week. Someone recommended me their album called "The Coast Is Never Clear." Now you're suggesting "Yoko." I guess I should check these guys out.

So my question is, do you have both of these albums and which do you think I should get?

  • jeez, I was kinda hoping for something other than a long list of extremely well-known bands.

I do have both of those albums. I like "Yoko" a little better, but "The Coast Is Never Clear" isn't bad either. I would start with "Yoko" and if you like what you hear, then pick up "The Coast Is Never Clear."

Glad to see we have very similar musical tastes.

les Thugs, a band from Angers, France. They were on Sub Pop and Alternative Tentacles labels.I saw them in a small club in San Francisco in the early 1990s: it was one of the most amazing rock shows I have ever experienced, up there with the 7/15 PJ show. I don't know if they are still together, I have not seen new releases from them for a long time.

i would sleater-kinney, broken social scene, and doves.

i think doves should be the biggest band in the world. while i do not think they are best -still damn damn good, doves is a band that has very anthemic songs that i am surprised have not caught on, where as a band like coldplay gets all the hype. i guess my friend put it best: when you a guy that looks like grizzly adams -doves-the commerical potential is not that good.

Paw made one of the best cds of all time, IMO. Dragline is a masterpiece but yet so overlooked. Their second record "Death to Traitors" is also excellent but impossible to get any longer....I highly recommend them both...sort of grunge with a country vibe to it
