I just downloaded Holland, 1945 the other day after hearing Jason from DBT cover it.
I was turned onto Slobberbone recently as well.

"We paced ourselves and we didn't rush through it and we tried to be as creative as our collective minds would let us be over some course of time instead of just trying to rush through a record"
To me indie is a vague term also. So by definition, Death Cab for Cutie is no longer indie, you know?
Many of the bands listen I like or am interested in learning more about. I remember back in high school and just after knowing people who were big into Husker Du and Fugazi but never really heard their music. Can someone explain their sounds? I can't listen to music at work online. :(
"What’s Orphans? I don’t know. Orphans is a dead end kid driving a coffin with big tires across the Ohio River wearing welding goggles and a wife beater with a lit firecracker in his ear." - Tom Waits

Husker Du I have always thought of them as a more aggresive Pixies. Their SST releases are downright raw. Their first couple borderline on the unlistenable IMO (Land Speed Record, Everything Falls Apart), however Metal Circus EP, Zen Arcade, Flip Your Wig and New Day Rising are the shit. Catchy hooks abound but aside from a few tracks not radio friendly. The production SUCKS on them however. They did sign to Warner Bros and their most accessible and much better production wise CD and a great start is Candy Apple Grey. Very catchy and quite depressing at times. Songs to check out if you get the chance
Pink Turns to Blue
Never Talking to You Again
Something I Learned Today
Diane
Flip Your Wig
Games
Divide and Conquer
Celebrated Summer
New Day Rising
Books About UFO's
Too Far Down
Sorry Somehow
Ice Cold Ice

"Reality continues to ruin my life." - Calvin & Hobbes.
lots of amazing bands listed so far. I remember threads like these turning me on to 3/4 of my music current catalog just a couple years ago . It's like a whole new dimension of music.
I don't think these have been listed (nor am I sure if they fit the "indie" bill but they're worth listening to regardless):
The New Pornographers (as well as Neko Case and AC Newman's solo work)
Iron and Wine
Arcade Fire
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Decemberists
Kaiser Chiefs
Minus the Bear
Paul Westerberg
The Shins
Talking Heads
Toadies
Ugly Cassanova
The Walkmen
"I'll do whatever the song dictates - if it doesn't need a real lead, then I won't do one. But if it does, then I'll fuckin' go off." - Mike
"Japan is awesome; the fans there knew all the words to all the songs...at least phonetically." - Stone
"I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version." - EV
the cure, the church, echo and the bunnymen, b.a.d., psychedelic furs, pixies, swervedriver, blur, charlatans, archers of loaf, morrisey, sunny day real estate.... the list could go on forever.
tom waits isnt really indie....but hes sweet as hell.

Oh yeah, thanks for reminding me. Death to the Pixies! Yeah, I'd say that Sonic Youth and the Velvets most certainly deserve the regality.
And while we're at it, didn't Husker Du influence Pearl Jam somehow? I think I remember reading something among those lines.
-Dick Cheney
"Are you taking over or are you taking orders"
-Joe Strummer 1952-2002
"All the war-propaganda, all the screaming and lies and hatred, comes invariably from people who are not fighting."
-George Orwell
I agree, but One Foot In the Grave is his only album I consider "indie."
WAR + MAGIC BEANS = PEACE
