I think that is an oxymoron for the most part.

Indie is not a sound. It's a band that has not yet signed to a "MAJOR" label. Usually you are stuck picking up their cds at local record stores or at bar shows.

There's a few small independant labels (hence Indie) but some of the supposed Indie labels are simply arms of a major label.. something like Hellcat/Warner situation.. Warner's way of getting in on the mini-punk explosion a few years ago was to sign deals with Hellcat and use their roster.

    Thanks

And I know what Indie is im aware that it means you arn't signed to a major label. Maybe I should have rephrased that to what are some good bands not signed to a major label.

  • Modest Mouse (the kings of modern indie music - ripped off countlessly cuz they've been around since the early 90s.. once a sub pop band), kings of leon, strokes,.. listen to college radio and you'll get your hands on the best of the real indie crop.

    i hate that it's become a genre :(

There are a lot of really good bands out there, it depends of what yo like to listen but if you want to start with indie rock bands well, from the 90´s-00´s:
Pavement, Built To Spill, Modest Mouse, The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Death Cab For Cutie, Wilco, Yo La Tengo, Luna, Snow Patrol, Belle & Sebastian, Elliott Smith, Heatmiser, Teenage Fanclub, Sebadoh, Modest Mouse.

...and if you are looking for early indie bands well: The Smiths, R.E.M., Sonic Youth, Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Bauhaus, Joy Divsion etc.

But if you want to start from the beginning: The Velvet Underground.

    Interpol.

I love these guys. I think they have some quality stuff that is so hard to find lately. Click http://www.myspace.com/interpol and listen to 'Narc'. Some people say they're a Joy Division copy but I don't care I think they're great.

I love their first cd, Turn On The Bright Lights, Antics it´s great also but TOTBL it´s special.

  • If you like cheesy Jeff Mangum wannabees it is.
  • I'm not sure if these are considered 'indie', but Husker Du and Sonic Youth are excellent too. They sure did influence a lot of bands since then.
