Need Some Good Chick Rock For My Wife

I'm trying to find some good female fronted rock bands for my wife. I'm trying to ween her off of Avril and Kelly Clarkson. She won't listen to anything to hard or raw though. She likes Garbage, some Cranberries, some Hole, and old Alanis. She also enjoys the Like. Any suggestions? She didn't care for Yeah Yeah Yeahs (not melodic enough and too raw). Please help me find something that we'll both enjoy together! I'm not to big on female bands but will be willing to give it a shot. HELP ME PLEASE!!!

EDIT: She's digging on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs now.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

  • Gemma Hayes is pretty cool. Her song 'Let a good thing go' is amazing.

you mean like Sleater-Kinney? cause they're good (imo); they are hard and raw sounding, much of the time; patti smith has been around for ages, and she will always be my favorite woman rocker.

  • Ooh, ooh, I forgot: 'Over the Rhine' are a great band. Their album 'Eve' is a good rock album. They've veered into alt. country in the later years, but when they rock, they rock, melodically :) They are Christians, but they hardly wear it on their sleeve. I remember being an innocent 12 year old brought up in a conservative Christian home, surprised to find the word 'Shit' on the Eve album. Wow, that was controversial ;)

Edit: have a go with the noisettes as well. Slightly like Yeah yeah yeahs, but more melodic I would say, at least more than Yeahs' first album. The second is pretty melodic.

I would agree with an earlier poster, Fleetwood Mac seems like an ideal fit. :) Then work on her for some PJ songs. ;)

She's not hard or raw .. and will get your girlfriend away from Avril and Kelly.

Not sure if KT will get your girlfriend into anything heavier, but sometimes you just have to face it .. some people won't ever get into hard rocking stuff, no matter how hard you try to educate them :)

i dont know the name and it might've already been mentioned, but what was kim deal's band post-pixies? the one with the song "cannonball"? she's one of a small handful of women rockers i really dig.

Just an update here: I picked up the Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Show Your Bones" yesterday at Target when shopping with the wife. We've listened to it twice while driving around and she seems to be digging it. She did ask "So why do you say that this is supposed to be better than Avril Levinge?" I need a good reason to give her other than Avril writes poppy crap music. Help me out. BTW, thanks for pointing me in the direction of YYYs. Finally some chick rock that we can both enjoy.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.
