OK there's been quite a lot of talk about Myles Kennedy lately since he's supposedly going to be singing with Zeppelin.....anyway, I just wanted people to hear this song from his old band Mayfield Four. It's called 12/31, and in my opinion, it's pretty much a vocal masterclass. There's a lot of Jeff Buckley influence both musically and vocally.

From the Fallout album. My ears have been blessed by this many times :)
I am lost, I'm no guide. But I'm by your side...

Yep, now THAT'S what I'm fucking talking about!

This is precisely why I listen to Alter Bridge, for that voice! I would never argue that musically they are the most innovative band going, but Myles Kennedy is one of the most gifted vocalists to emerge in a very long time, and it's time people realised it!

Although this just isn't the kind of music I'm interested in, I respect that Kennedy is a terrific singer. The only thing is, technically superb or not, he sounds like an amalgamation of other 90s vocalists who he no doubt loved. Half of this song could easily be Jeff Buckley and the other half could easily be late 80s Cornell. I mean, the resemblance to Jeff is uncanny. While that might be an exciting prospect for some, I'd rather just listen to Jeff since the songs appeal more to me.

    Still, a very gifted singer.

I respect that. I actually prefer the Mayfield Four's stuff because he really got to show off the more soulful stuff - they did an awesome cover of Marvin Gaye's Inner City Blues, he really goes to town with it.

I do get what you're saying about his influences, but he had a pretty established style even back in the early 90's, he's said in interviews that he was mainly listening to soul music back then. I guess the Cornell comparison comes from the fact that there aren't many alt-rock singers who sing that high, so it's an obvious comparison.

The Mayfield Four do seem a lot more interesting musically than Alter Bridge... I always thought in Alter Bridge, Kennedy was fighting for space up front with Tremonti's shredding stupidity.

Weirdly I don't mind the shredding, most of the time I'm put off (i.e. dragonforce), but I think most of his solos are pretty tasteful and melodic.

But yeah, Mayfield Four were far more alt-rock (for want of a better term!), I'm hoping Myles' soulful style seeps into AB's music eventually.

facepollution, You know I'm happy You wrote this thread:)

Myles's voice give me this kind of feeling, which I haven't got from the first time when I heard Ed Vedder. Of course I can't compare Ed to Myles - to many differences, PJ is my past, present and future, Kennedy is just... great, but He's not a part of my life.
But, everytime when He sings so high and so long - I can't breathe! So, if I die - it will be strangulation - You can accuse Myles Kennedy for this!
    :)
Of course Alter Bridge is far to perect rock band and I hope Myles will go farther. And I also prefer Mayfield Four. Myles should sing more often like there. Even in Citizen Swing - for me Deep down is great, what I can't say about Cure me with the groove. I love: "Pacify", "All the same" and like some others.
And Fallout is just amazing! My favourite is... Fallout song - so ... mad and real;)

and 12/31, and Overflow, and Inner city.. and Big verb and.. from Second skin Summergirl (http://pl.youtube.com/watch?v=ymMs0bD9w0k) and Lyla, and Believe and... and Travelling riverside blues - the cover makes by Myles and... ohh, sorry I bore You...
IMO Myles is closed in AB. Ok. Mark Tremonti is really good technically in guitar playing, but his style is not so unique.
And Myles... I really love the way He can find Himself in so different musics. And He seems to be so sincere

Yeah I can't help wishing that they they would explore some different sounds, and Myles could definitely lead them in some really interesting directions. But as far as mainstream rock music goes I still enjoy Alter Bridge, and they put on a decent live show.

I hope someday they will visit my country. Guys, for one I'm jealous being not American - only for these chances to see so often great bands live:)

I live in the UK, they tour Europe more than they do the US!

    Really?
And they put bonus tracks on their albums especially for UK...
    You are blessed;)
I wonder what we should do to have the same privilegies? Probably increase our currency (is it correct in english?). well, this might be a little difficult to do.
BTW. Do You know why they don't tour so often their own country?

They tour more often in Europe because they've been far more succesful over here than they have in the states.

Not entirely sure what you mean about increasing the currency?!

I mean if zloty (our polish money) was stronger like pound
so how is it correct in english?

Ah ok I see what you mean, yeah currency is the correct word. I guess at the moment they tour the places where they have a track record for pulling in the crowds. But you do get some big name bands in Poland right? I know a certain Seattle band play there sometimes.....;)

Of course, but it's not so often. i mean - often it's 3 or more cities in one tour of any band:)

Nice thread. One of my all time favorite singers. I used to see the Mayfield Four play club shows in Seattle. After the shows, Myles would just be walking around on the floor, chatting with people, thanking them for coming. He's an incredible talent, and a real person.

It scares me that people see only a new-Led Zeppelin-vocalist in Myles.
    It is so fucking unfair.

Well I guess that's what happens when you align yourself with 3 ex-members of Creed. I was all ready to hate Alter Bridge when I first heard about them, but once I heard that voice I was absolutely blown away.
  • halszka123halszka123 Posts: 1,109
I was in better position. I didn't hate Creed. I was curious what's happened with this band (it was so quiet about them) and found out they broke up. And went further, and found on youtube Alter Bridge. But I saw two songs - it wasn't soooo big thing..
And then - I watched AB acoustical. And I wanted to know - who is Myles f***ing Kennedy? What He did before?
And now I wait... what this man will create more. The same as I can't imagine Eddie Vedder in another band, the same I can't imagine Myles would stay forever with Alter Bridge. You know - I can write it here, I can't write it on AB message pit, but it's how I feel.
I hope Myles will be famous one day - imo he deserves it.
And I still can't believe it that Creed was so famous and in the same time the Mayfield Four had only small group of fans.

  • Myles Kennedy, is an average singer. With average lyrics. Not a very good live performer either. Cant believe all the hype, he gets on here.

I can't believe you type pretty much word for word the exact same post EVERY time. Clearly you don't understand what singing is.

The show I saw them play in London a few weeks ago was just shy of 5000 people, which is pretty damn good. They certainly rose to the occasion, Myles' voice was on incredible form - this song in particular floored me, and proof that he certainly can sing live:

    Thanx for the link:)
I hope I will have a chance to see Myles on show, though I have mixed feelings- sometimes I don't like to watch Him on stage. There is sth in His behaviour, sth like acting, I don't know.. I'm not sure if I like it. But definitely, definitely I LOVE His voice and the way He use it. Recently I can't live without it:)
Thank You again for the link:) If You have some more - please, give me a sign
