I actually saw him murder it live in San Francisco

His beard was worst than his vocals though.

yeah right. Layne would probably feel honored that Hetfield (who is twice the musician that Layne ever was) is singing one of his songs. does Hetfield do a good job here? not really, but it's a tribute if anything

I had to laugh when Hetfield was held up at Heathrow for potentially being a terrorist.

Metallica have done some pretty poor covers but I think their cover of Turn The Page is quite good.

Phil Anselemo does a better job, his voice is more fitting, Hetfields does'nt fit well with Cantrell.

    I can't agree more!

Hettfield's voice isn't made for songs like that, Hettfield is more from:

    HOO - HA - HEY!

And AIC needs a voice like this:

    HOOOOOOOOO - HAAAAAAA - HEEEEEEY

sorry just had to do that -_-'

Well since Layne was a singer, not much of a musician, I hope That Hetfield is a better musician!!!

just because you don't play an instrument doesn't mean you're not a musician. Ozzy and Roger Daltrey are musicians aren't they?

Dude I hope you were being sarcastic, that was rubbish. His voice was wobbling all over the place - nowhere near the range or power to pull that song off.

    Well that's ok then!

If you wanna hear an AIC song with a decent guest vocalist, track down Mark Lanegan singing Rooster - damn good!

It wasnt that bad....it's just that their voices are too different, comparing Layne Staley to James Hetfield, is like comparing apples and oranges.

I agree with this as well, and that is the only problem with the performance.

WOAH. Anselmo has a very powerful voice and a bigger range than Staley. He doesn't have the emotion in his voice however; it's angry or nothing.

First off.... How dare you bash Hetfield on this site. Second let Layne get up and sing....oh yeah he can't, so they got some hack (I don't recall his name) to sing these songs. Whoever he is he puts nothing of his own into it.
Now then James even says he's no singer to quote "I still sing like a sailor". Layne had one of the best most distinct voices in rock, and no one will come close to him.
But save the bashing for those that deserve it, those two bands were/are friends and James went up there to do a song that most fit for him. IMO WTF do you sound like when you're rocking Would? in your car or something. Let me say I've been to my # of concerts and 99% of the people can't carry a tune to save their life....so save the armchair quarterbacking or get up there and do it yourself.

Well, I didn't hate it. I didn't love it either. Layne had such a unique voice its hard to imagine anybody else singing his song and it sounding right. James' voice is raw metal, and doesn't have that long-a-way power that you need for a song like this. But I thought it was a decent tribute. Surely, it can't be perfect. Everybody knows that, because really the only person who can do it justice is Layne and he's gone. :(

where is the video with the singer from Metallica? the video that was linked in the first post is retired baseball player, Mark McGwire. James Hetfield has a long mullet and a thick handlebar mustache and was kidnapped from Metallica around 90-91 and was replaced by McGwire in order to turn Metallica from the greatest metal band ever to a sad pathetic parody. so if anyone actually has a vid of the real James Hetfield doing an AIC song, let's see it.

Purely judging his singing on that performance, no he does not have Staley's range at all.
