I have a LOT of these:

Pearl Jam - Vitalogy (used to be my least favorite PJ album - now it is my 3rd favorite behind Yield and No Code)

Anything by Kings of Leon (these guys took me forever to "get")

The Arcade Fire - Neon Bible (originally saw it as a huge step down from Funeral...now, not as much - though nothing will top Funeral for me)

The Postal Service - Give Up

The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America (kept climbing, slowly but surely, until it found my #2 spot of 2006 - right behind Avocado :)
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

    Radiohead - In Rainbows
Radiohead - OK Computer (had to listen to 'The Bends' first, then I 'got' OK Computer)
Arcade Fire - Funeral (bought it, didn't dig it, then I bought Neon Bible, went back to Funeral, and holy shit).
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V
  • Chris Cornell's Euphoria Morning. It was just so completely unexpected after Soundgarden, I couldn't wrap my head around for a while.
Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.

    DJ Shadow - Endtroducing . . .

Wow, i thought I was the only one here who listened to that cd. I basically hate rap, but that cd is very good. Its made out of nothing but samples.

I thought every vaguely clued in kid who cares about being hip in high school had a copy of endtroducing :p Nah, I'm semi-joking. Great album.

For me, 36 Chambers by Wu-Tang Clan. From the ages of about 8 to 16 I only really enjoyed C.R.E.A.M, Shame on a Nigga and Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nothing Ta Fuck Wit, even though I was into hip-hop. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks. In my top 5 of all-time almost certainly.

    haha, I love Wu Tang.

lots of albums took time to grow on me, off the top of my head:
    BRMC- Howl
    Radiohead- Amnesiac
The Strokes- First Impressions of Earth
    The Redwalls- De Nova
The Doors- when I first heard their self-titled, I didn't even listen through. came back later and was stunned, then I got into the band.
Pearl Jam- Yield; I only heard Do The Evolution from it, was kind of like "what" and left it alone. then I came back to the entire album and that's how I became a huge PJ fan, lol.
The Clash- self-title;d same scenario as with The Doors.

eh, I'm sure there are others, but that's enough for now... i'm sure people will freak on me for not liking The Doors and Clash right away, since even I'm surprised that I didn't these days, haha.

back in 1992, it was Ten. :D a friend had left the CD at my house, and the first few times I listened to it, it just sounded like noise to me. but something in Eddie's voice intrigued me, and it wasn't long until I was a massive Pearl Jam fan - it really changed the way I experience music.

My first Iron Maiden album was Iron Maiden, and instantly I loved it. The next one I got was Piece Of Mind. Now between the two albums Maiden had released another two albums, one with Paul D'ianno (the singer on Iron Maiden) and another with Bruce Dickinson after D'ianno got the boot. Piece Of Mind was quite different in sound to all its predecessors, mainly due to Bruce's voice and the new direction they began to take when Bruce joined. It was the first to feature Maiden's fantastic, full blast, over-the-top, larger than life sound and it took me a while to appreciate. BUT since I came to see the light, I've gotten into every other Maiden album almost straight away...

Just an observation for anyone beginning to listen to Maiden. If it doesn't strike up immediately, give it a bit of time. ;)

EDIT: And with that I become a Love Boat Captain. :D

Did you ever hear Smile from the Streets You Hold? Now THAT'S a difficult album. Definitely a grower though. I don't enjoy it as such but my god do I respect it.

Frusciantes most difficult album to get into is easily "a sphere in the heart of silence" i doubt most people make it through the first track.

yeah,I really tried with that album mainly because I remembered Seasons from the Singles OST. Pillow of Your Bones and the French version of Can't Change Me made their presences firmly known to me, I could still listen them anytime.

A Sphere in the Heart of Silence has nothing on Smiles. Fairly standard electronic album really. Maybe a shock to Chilis fans/fans of John's usual stuff but not a particularly difficult listen.

  • Funnily enough I think Pearl Jam and the Sex Pistols are the only bands OR solo artists where I've heard all their albums through

The album right from track 2-6 no problemo !

    Track 1 different story!

Hah :D I LOVE the first track! :) But I listen to loads of electronic stuff where it's really repetative and has much longer tracks than that so I suppose I've got used to it. It's not one of my favourite JF albums I have to admit.

It just wasn't what I expected after the Blue Album and I put it away and never listened to it. I took it out a few years later and it's now my favourite Weezer cd.

London Calling had to grow on me, I was like 'what's so great about this'? Then later on it hit me. I think it also might have had to do with the earlier CD's mediocre sound quality - the remastered version sounds SO much better.

Also, The Chemical Brothers' Dig Your Own Hole. I remember one of my brother's friends was playing this when it first came out, and I was like, 'this sucks, this is just noise.' But I really liked Setting Sun and eventually I bought the album and it's great.
