the big deal? he would have killed himself before he ever let his name be used to sell merchandise for some corporation, even if he wore said merchandise.

personally i wouldnt care if it were me, but if i had a wife who hated the whole commercialism thing and I knew without a doubt that she would never want her name to appear on a shoe made by 12 year olds in Vietnam, i sure as hell wouldnt spit on her grave by pimping her name out to make a quick buck.

Apologies, I didn't realise you were such a close friend of Kurt's.........

Whether people want to accept it or not, Kurt is a cultural icon, in the same way that Elvis, James Dean, Sid Vicious and any other rock star or celebrity who died young is. Kurt was kind of the ultimate misfit, and that's why so many teenagers identified with him and his music. Whether he wanted any of this is besides the point, he chose his career path, he chose the music and themes he wanted to sing about and he chose to end his life (please let's not have a murder/conspiracy debate in this thread). People making money from his image is inevitable, and in all honesty a pair of shoes dedicated to him, made by a company he essentially endorsed whilst alive, is hardly the worst thing going. It's not like his music is being used in a commercial for coke, or indeed just regular converse.

its not inevitable, all she has to do is say no.

But like i said, it really doesnt matter to me, but it says a lot about her and how shitty a person she is.

Well that would be if everybody agreed it was wrong. I think you need to pull the emotion out of it for a second and look at the big picture. In the grand scheme of things, it's not a big deal - and if you think it is, then perhaps you should read the news more often, cause there's plenty worse shit going on around the world. In all honesty, I don't see how this is any different from the $200 Pearl Jam poster book. Both items are only going to appeal to hardcore fans anyway.
  • hey if any of you want to pay me to put my scribblings on your shoes, i'm open to offers!

i dont totally agree with all that grunge, anti-corporate stuff either, but its pretty obvious Cobain did. And since its his name being used (without his permission for obvious reasons), it doesnt matter if everyone else is cool with it.

Yeah back in 1994 he did, who's to say what he would think now? It's been 15 years, and like I said the shoes are dedicated to him, it's not like they are using his image or music to sell regular converse.

Personally I wouldn't be seen dead in a pair, they look tacky, and in all honesty I don't think I've seen anybody wearing them anyway.....

I heard courtney love is scrapping her solo album to work on a project with the guitarist from now disbanded larrikin love. I really liked larrikin love but im not sure how on earth these two met up, its one of the strangest ideas for a combo ive ever heard. http://www.myspace.com/larrikinlove

I've always liked Hole despite the constant bashing of Courtney. She may be a nutbag but she made some good music.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

Haha, kudos on pulling up a ten year old thread! It was really weird reading my past comments, though I still stand by them! And cheers for the heads up on the Live Through This reissue, I've just pre-ordered. I saw a few days ago that the original members were all hanging out together, I wonder if a reunion is on the cards......

Thought the same thing. That would be great.

"Live Through This" is a brilliant album and is probably a good part of the reason I passed the Bar exam the first time (listened to it a ton while working out before Bar review). I saw Hole many times on the Live Through This tour as well and they were fantastic live, never quite the same show twice. Saw them twice on later tours, not the same band or the same amazing energy.

All that said, I still remain convinced that Kurt Cobain wrote most of Live Through This, or at least co-wrote most of it. The fact that her lyrical content was never like that again is certainly part of the evidence for me. It also just sounds like his writing. So as much as I loved that album and that tour, their live show and musicianship is all I give them full credit for. We'll never really know how the songwriting of the album itself breaks down. Courtney's the only one alive now who knows.

I agree with facepollution. Courtney's an underrated lyricist. Hole rocks. I miss

    her anger and honesty. Angst!

    VIOLET

And the sky was made of amethyst

And all the stars looked just like little fish

You should learn when to go

You should learn how to say no

    Might last a day yeah

    Minus forever

    Might last a day yeah

    Minus forever

When they get what they want

And they never want it again

When they get what they want

And they never want it again

Go on take everything, take everything I want you to

Go on take everything, take everything I want you to

And the sky was all violet

I want it again, but violent more violent

I'm the one with no soul

    One above and one below

Might last a day, minus forever

Might last a day, minus forever

and so on... hmmmm! cheers from Toronto.

Probably my favorite song on Live Through This. And as I said above, I am pretty sure Kurt Cobain wrote it, or at minimum co-wrote it. Which doesn't take away from what a great song it is. I just cannot and will not give Courtney full credit for it. And by the way, I'm a woman who absolutely adores and celebrates amazing female artists in all genres. And I also call it like I see it when I think men ripped off someone. So this isn't about gender. It's about the music and lyrics and whose work it sounds just like, and the fact that she was never able to come even close to the lyrics on this album again (beyond maybe a line or two on later albums, but not even a whole song).

I really don't buy any of that, the lyrics are so female-centric and autobiographical. I also do think she came close to that again, the lyrics to Reasons To Be Beautiful and Dying are just as powerful to me.
I don't think it's any secret that Courtney is better when she collaborates - the same can be said for many respected artists.

If anything, I think that Nirvana's move to a more melodic style acted as a guide to many acts of that era, Hole included.
