Check out Neil Young and Crazy Horse if you haven't already but otherwise no one sounds like them. That's the whole point.

I agree that no-one is similar, but I generally love 90's bands.

Check out Kyuss and Blind Melon.

Blind Melon is nothing like Pearl Jam (musically) , although they are totally totally awesome. I would agree that if you like Pearl Jam you will like Blind Melon. But if we're talking bands similar in music, then Tragically Hip for sure!

Sure, musically they are very different, but they ARE similar in the fact that they are both awesome! :D

Now I can't believe I am gonna do this, because the band I am gonna name next is not on my to buy list to put it mildly. For the most part that is because I think they sound too much like other bands. To me they are a rip off of both Pearl jam and U2. However you asked about bands similar to Pearl jam so I think you may like them as many others do. Well I have made my excuses so here goes. Kane is considered to be a great band by many people in this part of the world.

Kane is a Dutch band that has got 3 or 4 albums out.

Once again, I know they are nothing like PJ. But why listen to stuff that sounds the same?

I said these two bands as they are the ones im pushing on everyone right now!

Yes I did notice that you said that. But it just made me laugh to see Kyuss, that's all. It is a good band to pass on, but I doubt he is in the mood for that if he is really searching for Pearl jam type bands.

    "similar to Pearl Jam"

I think you're going to have to more clearly define what you're seeking in order to find it.

I could say that Bonnie Raitt is similar to Pearl Jam because of her political views and social activism, but that doesn't mean that either one's music has much in common with the others.

For similarities in talented musicianship, I recommend Wilco.

For similarities in passionate singing and songwriting, I recommend Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals.

For similarities in longevity and connections to rock royalty, I recommend REM and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

You see how this can quickly become too broad a question?

  • The only great band I still listen to who resemble Pearl Jam (at least to me) is Incubus.

Live were always touted as sounding like Pearl Jam playing REM's music. Their later stuff has been shit, but Throwing Copper is an absolute masterpiece.

Sponge : Debut album 'Rotting Pinata' is very much a bandwagon jumping grunge rip-off album - but along with The Stone Temple Pilots 'Core' it's one of the better rip offs (unlike Creed, Bush for example!). But also like the Stone Temple Pilots after the debut the band found their own sound with the second album 'Wax Ecstatic' and by Third album 'New Pop Sunday' is a fantasic rock record laced with lovely pop melody.

The Who : Obvisously a huge influence on PJ, i'd say their Debut and 'Who's Next' are the best albums.

Someone mentioned 'Throwing Copper' by 'Live' i'd also suggest 'Naveed' by 'Our Lady Peace' - who like 'Live' have become utter shite in recent years.

Not soundalikes but for pure vibe and in a category of 'serious' music I would have to say:

Neil Young,Bob Dylan,Jeff Buckley,Grant Lee Buffalo,Gil Scott-Heron and John Martyn. They are all shit hot in my eyes!!

I agree with you, it is a broad question. I would also suggest looking at the rest of the "Seattle Sound" and PJ's roots as well. Green River, Mother Love Bone, Mudhoney, Tad, and (of course) Nirvana basically round out the Seattle bands. I enjoy listening to Green River then MLB then PJ to see the progression of the music. I also do the same with Green River and Mudhoney. It's interesting to see what carries over from band to band.

Also, if we're gonna list influences, Sonic Youth is a worthy band to check out.

King's X is a band you should check out now. Pearl Jam are fans of this band.

This would be a good place to start for that.

Sonically, Gomez reminds me a lot of Pearl Jam. Especially the Vitalogy, No Code era. And I think Blind Melon is a good pick also.

nickelback are a disgrace to the good canadian name. their lead singer is such a prick.

according to some tv show that i watched, the aforementioned bands are all Cher impersonators. However, the show did say Vedder was one too, so i just had to throw a brick through my tv screen.
