I'm not talking about the Kid Rock's and the Kanye West's of the world who make it known they are in it for the money. But which of your favorite bands are you sorry to admit are in it strictly for the money but try to hide the fact that they are?

It pains me to answer my own question but I have to go with U2. Man how they have changed.

Before I even finished reading your post, that's the band that crossed my mind.

Love U2, but I definitely see that.
I am lost, I'm no guide. But I'm by your side...

Can they really think of anything else to possibly sell? They are going to become Kiss if they aren't careful.

PJ action figures!!!!I hope to God that NEVER happens.
Other than the PJ Baby Onesies, the stuff they sell aren't that bad. I love babies and all but I really thought the Onesies are really cheesy. :p

If you guys are talking about prices, then most bands are in it for the money then. Even the Black Crowes are selling their bootleg CDs for $23.

How do you know that the stuff that finds its way on the website has anything at all to do with the band? I mean i doubt they called the fanclub and presented the idea of a onesie

  • have to disagree with the idea that uncle neil is only into the money.

I think their are maybe 10 bands around who embody integrity and true wisdom and the true path. uncle neil is one of them.

the ticket prices for his most recent show was beyond ridiculous. There is NO excuse for that.

But are you really telling me, you think uncle neil only is in the music game to make more money?

This is a guy who at EVERY turn has chosen, the noble and righteous path as opposed to the more lucrative path.

-refusing to be filmed during the woodstock festival

-refusing to take a main spot at woodstock 1994, turning down a 1 million plus dollar offer.

-makes political statements-Southern Man is one of the most pissed off songs ever written and played. but then he also in the 1980's became right wing and supported reagan. then in 2001 he supported the patriot act and the war in afghanistan. then in 2006 makes one of the most poignant protest records against the war in Iraq so far. He nearly dies of an aneurysm and his dad dies. so what does he do-he makes a folk/country album! Every step of the way he confounds his listeners and the record label.

-he was sued by his OWN record label for "not making Neil young records". When your own record label sues you for the music you are making you can bet you arent in it for the money.

-he made an entire album solely of feedback. and I believe made one entirely with that thing Frampton used as well. that vocoder thing or whatever.

You really want to suggest uncle neil is a mercenary?

And u2. No question that the band flies in high priced private jets sipping champagne, but you really think they make music only to rake in more cash?

I would argue they are in it for the activism. One of the most political bands of our time.

just because a band has obscene amounts of wealth doesn't mean they are in it for the money. how could U2 make music for the money now? they have more money than they could spend. i think that's a band that just wants to be on top, so any mainstream posturing comes from a pursuit of greatness or, as another poster said, a window to activism rather than making a bit more money.

  • u2 for sure. 110%. expect tickets to be $200 for this upcoming tour.

neil young for sure...maybe back in the old dayz he was cool but to ask $250+ a ticket for csnyx3 and the past 2 neil tours is nuckin futs

if neil and u2 werent in it for the money they would simply lower their ticket price to less than $80...but that will never happen....dice it how u want. it's greed.

i am going to keep saying the same thing over and over agian. going on tour costs alot of money. there are many people that have to be paid from the backstage people to the band. you can't just say that lower the prices or your doing music just for the money.

i have peopel tell me that Pearl Jam is in for the money just becuase of all the bootlegs they release.

U2 I can kinda get given the amount of money the pay for the stage design, lighting etc.

Neil doesn't use an eloborate stage in his shows.

What would people say if PJ charged $250/ ticket? People were annoyed at the price of the Eddie solo gigs and that was only $80

I love the band but U2 will charge $200+ because people will pay the money to go see them. I refuse to pay over a $100 for a concert. I paid $92.50 each for AD/DC but my boss took care of the tics but the prices are getting outrageous and STILL they come to soldout shows.

I don't think any band (appart from one hit wonders shitty top 40 "artists") is in it only for the money. But any band that makes you pay for there bootlegs (not an occasional live album, just regular bootlegs) is starting to get greedy. Oh and bands who criminalize their fans for illegal downloading as well.

you are a fucking moron for saying Kanye West. he recently stated that no amount of money could effect the way he makes his music and he will do whatever his heart desires...

i don't agree with you about the one hit wonders (atleast not all of them) are in it just for the money i would say that their record companies are. most one hit wonders don't make that much money as their record contract are not that great.

Except for his recent tour when he raped his fans with $250 ticket prices lol

I don't think he's always been in it for the money, and I don't think he is now, but ticket prices like that definitely indicate that the guy needs/wants money for whatever reason. So I'd say he's mainly performing for money now...money is the driving force.

All that stuff you talked about happened a long time ago...the Neil Young who protested and made unsellable records isn't necessarily the same guy you see nowadays.
  • I honestly don't think I listen to any bands who I'd say are TOTALLY in it for the money. I think bands like Tool or Pearl Jam will do/sell certain things to make MORE money that they don't really need, but I wouldn't say that the reason they make music is so they can make money.

It's record company greed that destroy music. Glad bands are selling their own material through sites such as Myspace.

Most bands make music to put food on the table, but it's the pimps like record companies that bleed them dry.

A journalist friend of mine (not Claire of Scotland I may add) but a chap from a San Fransisco music paper, interviewed many musicians he had harrowing stories to tell.
One of the saddest is one blues musician who had his music used for a commercial - and he didn't make a penny out of it. It just got him out of debt.
It makes me sick that people burn themselves just to make end meet while mega bands such as U2 (used as an example throughout this thread) rip up whole stadiums, but it isn't U2's fault but their record company.

i completely agree with you but i also believe that music fans are also a part of teh problem. i know that peopel here might not agree with me but i think a major problem is that people are downloading music for free. Record companies are bad but as a business they are not going to sign peopel who they believe will not make them money and if those bands are not selling records they won't get readioplay on mainstream radio which you need to have if yoru a new band to get paid.

Why is he a fucking moron? Your right that him saying it doesn't prove it, but kanye doesnt really do anything to make it seem as if hes in it all for the money. Look outside his solowork, he's been one of the best and most prolific hip hop producers of the decade. You don't get to work with people like Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli Jay-Z, 100s of others barely known by being in it all for the money. If anything it seems he's in it to be the best. Whether he's anywhere close to that is irrelevant to this conversation.

look at Kanyes' career. what stands out as saying in it for the money? This last tour ticket prices were actually remarkably low for the stage setup and openers he had on tour with him...he states time and time again that he pays for all of his videos with his own money. Look at who he works with. His features on his albums are generally unknowns....Lupe Fiasco, Dwele, Kid Cudi, John Legend (before Ordinary People), Mr. Hudson etc...and most of all look at the last album. does that really make you think he's in it for the money? if anything it proves he gives a fuck less about the money. take this line...

My friend showed me pictures of his kids
all i could show him was pictures of my cribs
he said his daughter got a brand new report car
and all i got was a brand new sports car

when asked about it in an interview, he said the fact that his friend didn't make much and still had all of this love and family around him while Kanye had sold millions of records was the turning point when he realized money really doesn't mean shit...
