addicted to this album. and i hope they do get bigger in the US, they deserve it.

I'm from St. John's by the way! Nice to see a fellow homelander on the board! :-)

I'd also love to see KoL get bigger, but I wish they were doing it on their own terms and not those of some stylists and a clever sound engineer...

Stylists? I don;t know about that, they've been seen many times over here in the UK shopping in Topman (http://www.topman.com) - the styles they wear happen to be pretty fashionable here in Europe at the moment, and that is where they spend a lot of their time, so it kind of figures that they've picked up the fashion.

Why is it not on their own terms, just because it's more mainstream sounding? Most bands that make it past two albums will start to change their sound.

i saw them in a ben sherman store in sydney but i didn't see a stylist with them.
however, it wouldn't surprise me if they keep an assistant around to help them get in & out of those skinny pants.
that strikes me as a team effort.

Haha! I did read recently that Caleb has stopped wearing them quite so tight though, cause he's worried he won't be able to have kids!

Album rocks just as much as the last 3.......!!!!!!!
    Conversations getting dull
There's a constant ringing in my ears
Sense of humor's void and numb
    And I'm bored to tears.......
  • I've had time to listen ... all weekend ... really, really good. Cold Desert is firmly embedded in my head.

I preferred the shaggy hair, beardy, denim shirt and flairs look... I hate Topshop fashion and I think Caleb looks ridiculous with that haircut but at the end of the day, as I said to someone yesterday, the haircuts don't write the albums.
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

The dude's losing his hair, I think he's running out of options!

This is very true, but bands DO sometimes start relying more on looking the way a "rock star" is supposed to look and less on their music.

Someone had suggested in an earlier post that there is no way for us to know if this is all calculated by the band members or not, and that is quite true. HOWEVER, it has to make you wonder a bit when a band that always sounded different now sounds (and looks) a whole lot more like what's fashionable in the mainstream right now.

I agree, they are a lot more mainstream. I find it strange how they all shaved and shopped at Topman at the same time... methinks the record company had something to do with it :(

If you can remember back to 2003 when their first album came out, tight fitting retro t shirts and boot fit jeans were all the rage, and that's exactly what they were wearing - they're just keeping up with fashion, as most people do - well apart from my mate Dave who's stuck in the 80's....
  • I love it, I'm listening to it right now. By far their best!!

They sure as hell weren't as pretty back in 2003. You have to admit they've got a lot more female-friendly visual appeal than they did back then. :-)

Like I said, the new record is certainly a lot better than most of what's out there today and it's certainly not bad. I just feel like there's this big marketing push behind them now to "get huge" and it's overshadowing their music, which has been toned down and polished to a Top-40-ready shine. It kills me to have to admit it, but it's such a shame for a band that was doing something really different (or at least putting their own spin on some great ideas) to suddenly be content to put out music that sounds a lot like U2, Coldplay and even Bon Jovi...formula bands. I always loved that Kings of Leon weren't a formula band. I heard the first notes of their first EP and thought to myself "YES! This is what rock n roll sounded like before Lear jets and cheesy videos killed the vibe."

    Oh well...

That's what I was getting at... they're A LOT more female friendly

Well they changed their appearence quite a lot even by their second album - and for the record, the reason why I can't spend more than five minutes on any of their fan forums is because all the girls are moaning about how Caleb should grow his hair back so he looks like he used to, talking about the music seems almost impossible!

I think they're just evolving, they started off with raw talent and over time they've gotten better as musicians and they want to show that off. as much as I like their early stuff, the KOL from 2003 would never have been able to pull off a song as brilliant as Closer or Cold Desert. I have no doubt that the next album will sound completely different to this one, because that is the pattern they have set with every record.
  • i saw these guys open for p.j. and thought i'd check out their latest -man it is rockin! i really dig it right now - can't wait to listen again when i get off work!

  • on first listen, i loved the opening 3 tracks, and i want you. now, i really liek the whole album except for a couple of cheesy tunes. its way mor emainstream than anything theyve ever done, but sometimes thats what you have to do if you want the big pay day. a couple of tunes sound waaaaay too much liek coldplay. i know radiohead are big fans, and i wish they would've went more radiohead than coldplay.

    still a good album...
