Is the new KOL album good?

I can not figure that question out. I admit, I like a lot of the music on the album, but the lyrics are cheesy at points. Plus, it is over produced in some areas. I enjoy the first album so much because it was so raw and good for partying to.

  • For me all their albums except the first one have been growers and it seems like this one will be no different. I think it is good, but not great like the debut.
All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow

They say every sin is deadly but I believe they may be wrong...I'm guilty of all seven and I don't feel too bad at all
  • its my second favorite KoL album right now. Cold Desert is great.
  • I love Closer and Crawl.... perhaps two of the best KOL songs ever...

I love it...then again im fairly new to this band and from what i understand its a fair departure from their first two albums.

  • An average band. With average musicians.
  • Yes is the answer you're looking for, different, but still good all the same.

i had to give it 6 or 7 listens... i like it, 4 or 5 of the songs are instant sing-alongs and will be great live... but 3 or 4 dont stand out enough for me. but its really good.. :)
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

They released 3 albums before this one.

I would put this one in 3rd place honestly, even though I love it.

  • Am I the only person that finds that certain albums suit certain vibes? I dunno, it just seems most people seem intent on comparing records to each other, whereas I like it when bands have different records to suit different moods.

Kind of like I'll throw on Afghan Whigs' album 1965 if I'm getting ready to go out on a boozey night out, because to me it's a perfect party type album. But later on when I'm more on a come down I might be more inclined to listen to Black Love because that has a slightly more mellow and darker, late night vibe to it.

This new KOL album, for me, is their late night (hence the title!) come down album - there's lots of atmospheric stuff and the general feel is more mellow. I've been a fan since their first EP came out years ago, so I've really followed their progression, and really can't see why people have an issue with them taking this route on this one album. It's cool to have the variety, and in my view, is the sign of a good band.
  • I love all their albums, but this is my second favorite- Because of the Times is still on top

I just started getting into these guys and this is the first album I've bought by them. The guitars are a little too U2-esque, but at the same time they also have a unique sound all their own. I really like the album. "Cold Desert" is the best song on the record, and "Sex on Fire" is catchy as all hell.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

Right...but what i meant was that the first two albums (again from what i understand) were fairly different than the last two.

Which two would you rank ahead of this one? I'll pick them up next :-)

  • not bad. especially seeing they pulled it out so quick. i agree that the first 5 songs are instantly enjoyable. the rest feels a little un-inspired.

  • Love all of their work.

Latest album i'm still discovering, my favourite songs change every day, but so far Manhattan and Revelry are my top picks. Heard Crawl and SOF enough now, to give the other songs a chance :)

Youth and Young Manhood is definitely the rawest out of the lot, and a really good album to put on before you go out. Aha Shake is a poilshed version of their EP.

Because of the Times is alot darker and intense. I find the latest a happy medium :o

Only by the night is the best cd since..............well, because of the times. I think that sums up how good KoL are playing right now.

    Very good cd........

wasn't very impressed on first listen
maybe i expected a bit more,
but it's growing, especially the first half.
    Look Alive,
    See These Bones
  • I love the new album. It's hard to pick a favourite, one day it's Closer, next day it's Revelry. I can't choose.

Agreed, I like all the songs up to Revelry. After that not bad, but not great. It's definitely worth getting.

Cold Desert is after Revelry. And since that's the highlight of the album, that makes you wrong. :D:p

agreed. but I am loving "sex on fire"

  • i mainly liked the first half.. but now really getting into the second half..

    like 17 and notion.

Im really addicted to this album.. listen to it all the time on my ipod. every chance i get. I think its much better than because o' the times. I got bored of that one pretty quickly. this one has got a lot more listens.

    fav tunes:
    closer
    sex on fire
    use somebody
    revelry
    notion
    ...The Moon is Rollin' Round....
  • IMO the album is great! :D

The first 5 songs are awesome (especially 'Closer') and I loved them instantaneously. The rest of the album is a grower for me but 'Be Somebody' certainly stands out towards the end of the album.
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
  • I have listened to Kings of Leon and loved them since one of my friends picked up the Holy Roller Novocaine EP several years ago. I felt they got exponentially better with each album up to and including Because of the Times...

BUT (and I sense perhaps the original poster is having the same reservations about Only By The Night)...

The new album...I hated it on the first listen--not because I hadn't given it time to digest with multiple listens, because I realize the best albums require time to ferment. I hated it because I realized it was the sound of a band that had grown so much over its first three albums yet stayed true to its roots, but had suddenly compromised and let too many outside influences taint its art. The songs are way more accessible, to the point they are going to appeal a whole lot more to people who listen to bands like Train and 3 Doors Down and watch TV shows like Dawson's Creek--I'm sorry, this just disappoints me. For the record, I'm far from this big indie snob or anything, but I also value music that is 100% honest--music that artists like Pearl Jam, The Clash, and Neil Young have always made. When Neil Young makes a subpar album, at least you feel satisfied that he has at least followed his own muse and hasn't bent over trying to please anyone commercially. I realize Pearl Jam sell millions of albums and sell out arenas around the world, but at least I take comfort knowing that their music doesn't kowtow to "fashion" or popularity--they make the music THEY want to make. Kings of Leon, on the other hand, have made an album that's a calculated attempt to "make it big" and call me selfish, I resent them for it. They've at least partially compromised their art for a shot at the big time. For me, it makes it a little less special.

Upon further listens--only because I love this band--I have managed to find a soft spot for each and every song on this album. Certainly none of them are *bad* per se, but the album as a whole is a compromise. It's a pretty good listen if you're a fan of the band's sound, which I am, but it disappoints me that such a young, vibrant band has chosen to make an album so safe and generic. If it was a band other than Kings of Leon performing the same songs, I wouldn't even still be listening to this album.

The haircuts are safe and current, their clothes are safe and current, the lead guitar tone is safe and current--Jeezus, even Nathan's drumming is safe! What happened to the guy who drummed on Trani and McFearless?!?!?

Like I said, I love this band, I love their records, I love them live, but I'm a little bummed that they're seemingly headed for Coldplay territory...you can't please everyone and it seems like that's what they're trying to do...

I think they're really obsessed with becoming big in America. There was a recent quote in Rolling Stone about how it was heartbreaking how they were so big overseas but not so much in the US. So I think the change in sound was a conscious effort to become more accessible to the masses.

addicted to this album. and i hope they do get bigger in the US, they deserve it.
Who cares if the world is going down the toilet? Eddie Vedder got his mojo back!
