You only need to see his influence on songwriting, from PJ's Black, to a lot of contemporary pop, to realise he deserves to be rated highly as a pioneer of a particular kind of songwriting approach. His work with Taupin is pretty exemplary.

A lot of his stuff since the early eighties is too middle of the road for me, personally, but hey, Elton can do what he wants now. Plus, it's very difficult to write a good pop song, and Elton does it, so fair play to him.

no way is elton john overrated. guess you had to be around in the 70's to really appreciate his work? I don't know, that title of this thread kinda shocked me, even more than a previous thread asking the same question about stairway to heaven!

He's not over-rated because that guy can play a piano with anyone, but his music these days just plain sucks. I hate his voice now also. That being said, his seventies stuff and to a certain extent his 80's stuff ( empty garden ) is fantastic and his voice is not so "heavy" -

Yep, some time around 1982, his balls dropped, or something. He had a nice voice, before then.

He had surgery on his vocal chords in the 80s that changed his voice.

  • i don't think elton is overrated at all. and i just may be the only person in this thread who really likes his newest record. i sorta see him as having a comeback right now. the last few releases have been good.

  • I do not think he is over rated. I am not into his music like I use to be but the stuff in the 70's doesn't suck. My kids love the Muppet Show with the episodes that he is in.
