Very plain lyrics, ie: three days grace, nickleback

I've noticed alot lately how many newer rock bands have the most unpoetic lyrics. I guess its always been this way, but to me it doesn't sound right with the whole "post-grunge" sound. There is absolutely no poetry in the music of three days grace, most nickleback, saliva(puke), and many more that its too early just to think of. I mean pearl jam, soundgarden, smashing pumkins, alice in chains, stp and most of the rock bands I like have clever, poetic lyrics for the most part. Something about that makes the songs more ...... "song-like" to me. I can't help but find the lack of poetry somewhat annoying.

It's the old 90's sound being dumbed-down to appeal to a mass audience. Which is bullshit, because it insults the listener's intelligence and taste - after all, PJ, Soundgarden et al all achieved fair success without going "lowest common denominator".

Although when Nickelback and Creed sell millions of records, it makes me think that the people who buy it deserve what they get.
Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.

Well you say that they aren't poetic but there are probably a million Creed and Nickleback fans who would disagree with you. And who's to say that they're wrong?

You're beside me on the seat
Got your hand between my knees
And you control how fast we go by just how hard you wanna squeeze
It's hard to steer when you're breathing in my ear
But I got both hands on the wheel while you got both hands on my gears
By now, no doubt that we were heading south
I guess nobody ever taught her not to speak with a full mouth
'Cause this was it, like flicking on a switch
It felt so good I almost drove into the ditch
    I'm screamin'

Yea, "Got your hand between my knees And you control how fast we go by just how hard you wanna squeeze" is a work of genius. I didn't think Chad could get any deeper than "What the hell is on Joey's head" but he really scraped the depths of his soul for that one...

Just messing. I agree, I think the lyrics are pretty bad. But hey, I don't have any time for shit like Creed or Nickleback. But if somebody who loves the band does, and interpretates the lyrics or what have you, then more power to him.
  • I guess it's just a matter of opinion. I mean, I'm cool with people that enjoy Nickleback, Creed, ect. There's nothing really wrong with that. But in my eyes, I just don't see it as very poetic and powerful music. But hey, whatever floats your boat I suppose.

It's not a work of poetry but then again neither is Big Wave. One thing it does have over Big Wave is at least this brings back memories. Big Wave just makes me cringe that Ed could write such schlock.

I don't mind bonehead lyrics. They have their time and place.

I wish I was a neutron bomb, for once I could go off
I wish I was a sacrifice but somehow still lived on
I wish I was a sentimental ornament you hung on
The christmas tree, I wish I was the star that went on top
I wish I was the evidence, I wish I was the grounds
For 50 million hands upraised and open toward the sky

I wish I was a sailor with someone who waited for me
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me
I wish I was a messenger and all the news was good
I wish I was the full moon shining off a camaros hood

I wish I was an alien at home behind the sun
I wish I was the souvenir you kept your house key on
I wish I was the pedal brake that you depended on
I wish I was the verb to trust and never let you down

I wish I was a radio song, the one that you turned up
    I wish...
    I wish...

Not only are they plain but stupid too ex. "Pain I cant get enough, Id rather feel pain than nothing at all". They all have terrible vocalists and a boring sound as well. Absolutely dreadful, uncool music.........yet those are the most popular bands.

Exactly what people were saying about Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden when they first started out in the late 80s/early 90s.

I actually love the simplicity of wishlist. It is what draws me to the song and for some reason it makes me think about the past and the meaning little things have in yoru life a lot.

I know pulling one sample lyric from a band is a cheap shot and anyone can do it for any band ever, but Nickleback and many others don't have the songs that touch me.

so yeah maybe for some big wave and don't gimmie no lip don't strike a deep chord but i don't hear any nickleback songs making me feel like present tense, i got shit, black, immortality, or countless other songs do.

so it is not the fact that they have one or two HORRIBLE songs with very immature lyrics. It is the fact that in my opinion they lack the powerful songs to off balence their horrible songs.

Not to defend Nickelback too much but they have some good lyrics as well (but far outweighed by fluff). How You remind me has good lyrics I think, and the song Fly has good stuff.

    Fly by Nickelback

    Father, tell me somethin'
Where do bad men go when they die?
And mother says you'll go there but
Wings for her and I and I don't mind
Cause I have always wanted to learn to...
    Fly... learn to
    Fly... learn to
    Fly... learn to
    Fly...

    Brother, tell me somethin'
If I take this, am I going to die?
And he says no, so then I figure what the hell
I'll try cause it's my life
So light the match and you and I will...

    Fly... learn to
    Fly... learn to
    Fly... learn to
    Fly...

Cause I'm on my hands and knees I've crawled eternity to beg forgiveness
And someday I'll be there I swear to you, God, as my witness
For all the trusts I've broke and, let justice know, it's just that easy
    Cause I'm a liar, I conspired, I'm a liar...

    And father tell your son,
It's not your gun and bloody hands
    Don't hide behind locked doors
In dresser drawers those bullets wait to fly...

    Fly... wait to
    Fly... wait to
    Fly... wait to
    Fly...

Cause I'm on my hands and knees
I've crawled eternity to beg forgiveness
And someday I'll be there I swear to you,
    God, as my witness
For all the trusts I've broke and,
let justice know, it's just that easy
    Cause I'm a liar, I conspired, I'm a liar...
