  • great thread

marrillion's "clutching at straws" remains one of my fave cds ever

this song's called "just for the record"

"Many's the time I've been thinking about changing my ways
But when it gets right down to it it's the same drunken haze
I'm serving a sentence to write life's sentences
It's only when I'm out of it I make sense of this"

Tom Waits "Xmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis"

"Hey Charlie, I'm pregnant and living on 9th Street
Right above a dirty bookstore off Euclid Avenue
And I stopped takin' dope and I quit drinkin' whiskey
And my old man plays the trombone and works out at the track"

after a long slow nice piano intro, just the first four words..Hey Charlie im pregnant... catch you COMPLETELY off guard the first time you ever hear it!

hell, all of his songs have fucken awesome lyrics....

how bout Heartattack and Vine's opening...

"Liar, liar, with your pants on fire
White spades hangin’ on the telephone wire
Gamblers re-evaluate along the dotted line
You’ll never recognize yourself on Heartattack and Vine"

    or singapore's...

"We sail tonight for Singapore, we’re all as mad as hatters here"

    or rain dogs...

    "Inside a broken clock
Splashing the wine with all the rain dogs
    Taxi, we’d rather walk
Huddle a doorway with the rain dogs
For I am a rain dog too"

or It's All right with me

"It’s the wrong time and the wrong place
Though your face is charming, it’s the wrong face
It’s not her face, but such a charming face
That it’s all right with me"

and the WHOLE of the piano has been drinking :)

PS sorry im on a tom waits kick at the moment! :)

whistling in the beginning of patience guns n roses
    Oh dear dad

    I am myself

    Smashing Pumpkins - Mayonaise
One of the most chilling, beautiful, moving songs I've ever heard.

"Mother weep the years I'm missing,
all the time can't be given,
    back.
Well I'll shut my mouth and strike the demons,
    curesed you, and your reasons,
out of hand and out of season,
out of love and out of feeling
    "

Every single time I hear that song, to this day - 4 years or so since I first heard it - when the guitars crash for the first time in the begining i get tears in my eyes.

    Anyway..

"My love, she speaks like silence, without ideals or violence,
she doesn't have to say she's faithful, if she's true like ice like fire"

    or even better...

"Darkness at the break of noon, shadows even the silver spoon,
the handmade blade, the child's balloon,
eclipses both the sun and moon,
and to understand you know too soon,
    there's no sense in trying"

"It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" is lyrical perfection.
Come on pilgrim you know he loves you..

"Teenage angst has paid off well. Now i'm bored and old"

I'm having a hard time thinking of a better one that that. Plus, it's a great opening lyric to an entire album.
  • "Been dazed and confused for so long its not true,
Wanted a woman, never bargained for you.
Lots of people talk and few of them know,
Soul of a woman was created below."

    Damn, I love those lines.

  • Have mercy on me, sir
Allow me to impose on you

I will tell you a story
Of a man and his family
And I swear that it is true

Song of Joy - Nick Cave - Murder Ballads

Perfect introduction to a perfect Murder Ballad.

    Alice wakes
    It is morning
    She is yawning
As she walks about the room
Her hair falls down her breast
She is naked and it is June

Watching Alice - Nick Cave - Tender Prey

There's a devil waiting outside your door
    (How much longer?)
There's a devil waiting outside your door
It is bucking and braying and pawing at the floor
And he's howling with pain and crawling up the walls
There's a devil waiting outside your door
He's weak with evil and broken by the world
He's shouting your name and he's asking for more
There's a devil waiting outside your door

    Loverman
    - Nick Cave - Let Love In

God Cave is brilliant.. there are so many songs that I wanted to put in here but then thought... No, the best words are in the middle and that would defeat the purpose of the thread. Easy Money, Abattoir Blues, Henry Lee, Stagger Lee, The Mercy Seat,.... it just goes on and on. Genious.

    "My smile is stuck
I cannot go back to your Frownland"

    "I've got you,
You've got whatever's left of me to get.
    Our conversations are like minefields,
No one's found a safe way through one yet"

    "Once I had my heroes
    Once I had my dream
But all of that is changed now
    They've turned things inside out
The truth is not that comfortable, no"

"She took the Oldsmobile out past Condor Ave.
And she locked the car and slipped past
    Into rythmic quietude
    Lights burning
    Voice dry and hoarse
I threw the screen door like a bastard back and forth"
The car's on fire and there's no driver at the wheel

Dont believe what you hear, dont believe what you see
If you just close your eyes, you can feel the enemy

When I first met you girl you had fire in your soul
What happened your face of melting in snow?
    Now it looks like this!

And you can swallow or you can spit
You can throw it up or choke on it
And you can dream so dream out loud
You know that your time is coming round
...dont let the bastards grind you down
    This weekend we rock Portland

Yeah the fact that it opens an album makes it that much better.

I do have to say this one is pretty sweet as well (being as we're on a PJ message board and all)
