faith no more was pretty good..

but rage against the machine were fucking unique... and brilliant.

but yes, P.O.D. did try to rip RATM off... and did a piss poor job of it.

dont get me wrong, i like Faith No More and I LOVE Rage but Korn ripped both of em off pretty badly as did POD
I've faced it, a life wasted, and I'm never going back again.

Don't get take this the wrong way Echoes, but how is it not rock? Not trying to argue, but I would like to know why you think it's not.

Well, it sounds nothing like rock, first off. It has much more of a focus on darker themes, a much more profound influence from classical music/traditional folk musics (Mainly Black/MDM/folk metals).

The vocals are never as "clean" as rock vocals. I have never heard a proper rock song with a gutteral death growls like Cryptopsy, and rarely do I hear a Rock and roll bandemploy high pitched wails like that of say, Blind Guardian or DragonForce. Also, the instrumentations are markedly different. Rock and roll guitars rarely fire through areggiated sweep solos and finger tappings. Rock and roll rarely tunes their guitars down 2 or three steps like Children Of Bodom. Rock and roll double bass rolls or blast beats are basically unheard of.

I'll admit, up until the metal explosion of the 80's, when a lot of the new metal genres took off, a lot of the so called metal bands were very similar to hard rock. The line was pretty indistinguishable, with the exception of extreme cases. But to call bands like Slayer, Venom, Mayhem, Napalm Death, and Death rock is pretty ludicrous.

I'm not even going to go into the attitdue difference, but there is a lot of that too.

And I'll admit a lot of "nu" bands are starting to blur the line again. "nu"-metal is more an outcropping of rock than it is a subgenre of metal. I also think it is trash. It and most all of metalcore, too

  • I respect the reply. As for the Nu metal sucking, I agree, except for Mudvayne..They got me into metal and I will always love them for doing so..they might not be as musically talented as other..but their bassist, drmmer, and vocalist are all very talented at what they do..

metalcore..kse (i kind of like)..but lamb of god (most people call them core but I like them a lot)...

I would also like to know what genre you would put "Trivium". They are very very good IMO...lead singer/great guitarist is 19 yrs old and already put 2 great albums out...I have heard for many people that they are diff genres..thrash/death/core/nu/just plain hard rock..where would you place them?

Jeez mate....stop trying to come up with so many genres of music. Theres rock n roll and then theres the rest. Just cos you think there are all these fucking genres doesn't make you a fucking music guru.

I never said I was a music "guru", but thanks for the compliment. On the other hand, the quote shows a fantastic demonstration of musical tunnel vision.

Tunnel vision...why? because I don't know the names of these pathetic genres?
I like lots of bands....who play rock n roll, thats not tunnel vision...I'm just being sensible.

  • there now, it's fixed, happy?

Dude, I didn't mean to be a dick about it.

Edit : I still haven't seen one good reason why you all think metal/punk/hard rock are all of the same genre. A common ancestor does not mean they are the same now. Just because they use the same instruments doesn't mean they sound any at all alike.

ahhh i see i thought you were talking about POD..

    yes then, that's more correct.

POD are kind of a second generation rip off i suppose..

to Echoes: Rock and Roll is an EXTREMELY general and diverse genre.

think of it like a family tree... and bands like POD are the drunk uncles that everyone hates it when they show up at reunions...

and Pink Floyd is a crazy grandfather who everyone loves... :)

I would say drunk asomuch as the one who experimented a little too much in his younger years.

And personally, I just don't believe in genres that are so broad that encompass so many different types of characteristically different music.

I liked trivium until they went into those really cliche shitty sounding clean vocals (see "Pillar Of Serpants" at around 3:30). Also that little solo at the end of the song was just weak sounding. I guess melodic Metalcore is the best I can place them. I don't think he does very good death vocals, and it really detracts from the sound for me. They have more of a death influence for sure, and I definately like them more than As I lay Dying, Atreyu, Killswithch Engage, and Avenged Sevenfold and all those other "core" bands I loathe, but the pop-laden choruses just bug me.

I'm listening to Ascendancy right now, and I really don't like it. The singer just blows, and it honestly sounds like it is trying too hard to be appealing to the lowest common denominator. They have some good sngs, and I might even enjoy them if those really fake sounding choruses didn't come in. Just cheesy.

So uhhh yeah, it is definately metalcore, but with a good mix of melodic death metal in there. I can see the "nu" getting thrown in there as well, probably because of their pop-influenced choruses and emphasis on clean breakdowns. And a lot of the time his "growls" break downi nto what reminds me of the anguished hard rock voice that Vedder or that Stapp fellow made so popular. Sorry if I sound pretentious, or like an overly critical dick, or like I am pissing on your taste (I don't mean to) I'm just calling them like I see them
