Had to resurrect this thread for the Manchester Orchestra, who I'm really digging at the moment. I'll see em open for KOL in a week & am super pumped!

    Dr. Dog !!!!!
  • (depending on who i'm with, obviously some people know stuff others don't) I get funny looks if I mention any of the following... The Audreys, Wintersleep, Dax Riggs (and all of his projects like Deadboy and the Elephantmen, Acid Bath and Agents of Oblivion), Cat Power, Clutch, Damien Rice, Soilent Green, Horrorpops, Paw, Kimya Dawson, Adam Green, The Moldy Peaches, Covenant, Life of Agony, Electric Wizard, Superjoint Ritual, Michale Graves, Scissor Fight, Mr Bungle, Southern Isolation, The Oyster Band, Pride and Glory, My Morning Jacket, Peeping Tom, Mother Love Bone, Saul Williams, Nailbomb, Richard Thompson, Necrophagia, VNV Nation, Regina Spektor, Saybia or Witchcraft.

None of them are THAT well known and there's a rather ecclectic mix there... knock yourself out ;)
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

  • I really suggest that everyone listens to The Walkmen - You & Me. This band and album are amazing. If you have a chance to see them live, do it. There is so much put into this music. It really makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. One of my favorite songs on the album is "Four Provinces" and it has a big cymbal sound. It's inspiring and a really lovely tune.

Since we're talking Canadian bands, here's a few more:

    The Weakerthans
    Sam Roberts
    Matt Mays & El Torpedo
    The Constantines
    Cuff the Duke
    Greg Macpherson Band
    Sarah Harmer
    Matthew Good
    Sloan
    C'mon
    Kathleen Edwards
    Lowest of the Low
    Hugh Dillon Redemption Choir
    The Trews
    The New Pornographers
    Joel Plaskett
    The Stills
    Ron Sexsmith

That's a pretty good list. C'mon is fucking awesome. I saw them play a CD release at this dingy little bar in Winnipeg with a band called Hot Live Guys, whom they had just released a 7" vinyl with. One of the best bar shows I've seen. The bassist from Bad Religion (who I've spotted at this bar a few times. He's got some friends that live in the area) ended up on stage.

One thing I've always loved about Canadian rock (especially in the 90's) is how down to earth they are. There's very little pretentious, artsy garbage. It's just straight up rock-n-roll. I guess part of that comes from none of them actually being that big, they're really only known in Canada throuh CanCon.

A couple of other great Canadian bands are Big Sugar and The Headstones.

Here's some of the bands I like to go check out around Winnipeg. There's some really kickass punk rock being made in this city right now

    Hot Live Guys - http://www.myspace.com/hotliveguys
    American Flamewhip - http://www.myspace.com/americanflamewhip
    Electro Quarterstaff - http://www.myspace.com/electroquarterstaff
Igor and the Skindiggers - http://www.myspace.com/igorandtheskindiggers
    Quagmire - http://www.myspace.com/quagmiresucks
    The Farrell Bros. - http://www.myspace.com/thefarrellbros
    The Perpetrators - http://www.myspace.com/wpgperpetrators
Red Blanket (who do a wicked Rage tribute) - http://www.myspace.com/redblanket
    KEN mode - http://www.myspace.com/kenmode
    Velodrome - http://www.myspace.com/velodromenauts
    Under Pressure - http://www.myspace.com/underpressure

And last but not least Big Dave McLean. This guy is one of the best blues guitarists to ever live. He played with Muddy Waters back in the day and appeared on SNL with him. More people need to hear of Big Dave.

Just about anything Greg Dulli. I only got into this guy's stuff about a month ago, but it's freaking outstanding.
