    Love it.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.

Yea if you don't like Who's Next I'm guessing The Who isn't for you. I have the Deluxe edition as well, and I love it.

I know what you mean about Tommy & Quadrophenia, apart from a handfull of tracks I really haven't been able to get into them as albums.
Never really liked The Who's early, slightly poppy/Beatlesque side.
But, Who's Next!! Now there's an album I do love. Right up in my top ten of all time. Love it.

  • I used to love The Who between the ages of ten and twelve, but then I moved onto Hendrix and didn't really look back. However, Who's Next is a fine album. I think it's a pity Quadrophenia wasn't aborted at the time, like Lifehouse. Townshend might have distilled the best material from it, as he did with the Lifehouse material on Who's Next, and saved us the filler.

Maybe try Meaty Beaty, Big And Bouncy?

Glad your gettin in to Who's Next

Like the beatles, the "peak" is not my favorite.
    Dig the early stuff too.
    :D

You should at least pick up and give The Who Sell Out and A Quick One a quick listen. I highly recommend just ditching Whos Next for a while and sinking in to those two.

Also, Odds & Sods is essential, and Who Are You is a good later album with some quirky disco era goodness. (no disco though! i said disco-ERA. lol) ...

oh and THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT!
    WATCH IT!

    :D

    oh.
and when your ready for a little more.
Go track down a copy of ROUGH MiX!

" I don't really know myself" version at the Isle of wright is the superior version, other than than its a great record
  • Got my first Who album over Christmas. Yep, you guessed, it was Who's Next. Amazing album, Behind Blues Eyes in particular knocked me down cos I hadn't heard it before!

  • I've listened to a friend's cousin's who albums. They don't do anything for me. A little too cheesy, IMO. My mom was always my biggest provider of music and musical tastes growing up. She had some Who albums, I could never get into it back then either. I just really don't hear what is so great about them.

I love Quadrophenia up and down. Great album.

The only other Who album I have is "Who's Better, Who's Best", an old greatest hits collection I don't think they even sell anymore.

In getting into them, I would suggest a greatest hits album then go from there.

That wasn't on the original album. It was the B-side of the truncated Won't Get Fooled Again single, in 1971.

  • I was massively into the Who as a kid and saw them 9 or 10 times live in the UK. Mid-period albums like Who's Next and the original Quadrophenia album are their best work imho. Avoid the later releases (Face Dances onwards) like the plague, but the early stuff (pre-Tommy) is fun, if very different.

Zeppelin mean more to me now out of bands of that era, but the best of The Who is great stuff. I'd have thought most PJ fans would have loved Who's Next....?

that album saved my life, once.
  • if you want to hear tommy like you've never heard it before, pick up the double disc "join together". it's from the 1987 / 1988 tour and the first disc is a shortened, but incredible updated version of "tommy". truct me, you won't be dissapointed.

    (search function turned up nada)

i've been trying to get into the Who for some time (admittedly not really putting in heart and soul). for example i bought a 3 disk the Who DVD set including "live quadrophenia" (disk 1), "live tommy" (disk2) and "live hits" (disk3) and i must say it didn't really tickle my fancy (admittedly: without investing too much effort). some songs got my attention immediately though:
acid queen, baba, love rein ov'er me and some more.

today i was shopping for some albums (specific albums in mind), but while searching for any Tom Waits in vain, i came across "Who's next" (Deluxe edition) and decided to buy it.

i'm listening to it as i'm typing this (getting in tune) and i must say; once again i am sceptic whether i'll grow to love this album (speaking extremely prematurely). i know this album is considered as one of the all time great rock and roll releases. anyway, without really committing to a definite argument, i'll end of with a question:

anyone here love/hate this album/band with absurd abundance??

How do you have a name like "glasshouse" and not already be a Who fanatic?

Their best four records are Who's Next, Quadrophenia, Tommy, and Endless Wire. Live at Leeds is also kick-ass.

As for that DVD set, it's not that good. The Tommy disk is the Who at their absolute worst, In fact I will go so far to say that that's NOT the Who, it's a bunch of hired guns playing sterilized a version of their FOR them. It's soft rock... from what was once the most exciting and violent band out there. PUKE! The *worst* thing about the '89 tour was that they seemed genuinely excited to be there, but the arrangements sucked a metric ton of ass. Compared, with the '82 tour, when they were actually attempting play rock and roll, but sleepwalking through the whole thing. The '89 tour harmed their reputation immensely, and despite kicking a ton of ass in the last 8-10 years, they've never fully recovered in the mainstream. *(No wonder Robert Plant doesn't want to fuck around with LZ's legacy).

The Quad disc is better, at least that *almost* sounds like the Who, but Simon is still playing all of Pete's leads, and Roger has a sore throat or something-- and the audio/video quality sucks.

Cheesy? The Who are the original punk rock band. One of the most innovative rock & roll bands ever.
  • I Can't Reach You

I'm a million ages past you
A million years behind you too
A thousand miles up in the air
A trillion times I've seen you there

Your hair is golden, mine is grey
You walk on grass, it turns to hay
You blood is blue and mine is red
My body strains, but the nerves are dead

    I can't reach you
    I've strained my eyes
    I can't reach you
    I've split my sides
    I can't reach
    Tryin' to get on you
See, feel or hear from you

    The distances grow greater now
You drink champagne and past me plow
You fly your plane right over my head
You're still alive and I'm nearly dead

    I can't reach you
    With arms outstretched
    I can't reach you
    I crane my neck
    I can't reach
    Tryin' to get on you
See, feel or hear from you

    Once I caught a glimpse
    Of your unguarded, untouched heart
    Our fingertips touched and then
    My mind tore us apart

    I can't reach you
    With arms outstretched
    I can't reach you
    I crane my neck
    I can't reach
    Tryin' to get on you
See, feel or hear from you

    I can't reach you
    With arms outstretched
    I can't reach you
    I crane my neck

He told me he loves you
    He ain't no liar, I ain't either
So let's have a smile for an old engine driver
So let's have a smile for an old engine driver

    Please take a sweet

    Back at my place, maybe

    It'll come right
    You ain't no fool, I ain't either
So why not be nice to an old engine driver?
Better be nice to an old engine driver

    I can't believe it
    Do my eyes deceive me?
Am I back in your arms?
    Away from all harm?

It's like a dream to be with you again
Can't believe that I'm with you again

I missed you and I must admit
I kissed a few and once did sit
On Ivor the Engine Driver's lap
And later with him, had a nap

[you really don't need a "regular" Who version, this one is fucking spine tingling!]
Video for The Ramones cover version - standard Ramones, has nothing on the above, but fun

You think we look pretty good together
You think my shoes are made of leather

But Im a substitute for another guy
I look pretty tall but my heels are high
The simple things you see are all complicated
I look pretty young, but Im just back-dated, yeah

    Substitute your lies for fact
I can see right through your plastic mac
I look all white, but my dad was black
My fine looking suit is really made out of sack

I was born with a plastic spoon in my mouth
The north side of my town faced east, and the east was facing south
And now you dare to look me in the eye
Those crocodile tears are what you cry
Its a genuine problem, you wont try
To work it out at all you just pass it by, pass it by

i'm so glad i finally got around to buying this album (who's next: deluxe edition)! i'm loving it. the extra songs are mind blowing as well. i think the 2nd disk (featuring live performances) are some of the tightest rock and roll i've ever heard. Keith Moon's drumming is nothing short of divine and Pete's guitar is gem. 10/10 purchase.
