the Who: Who's next

i've been trying to get into the Who for some time (admittedly not really putting in heart and soul). for example i bought a 3 disk the Who DVD set including "live quadrophenia" (disk 1), "live tommy" (disk2) and "live hits" (disk3) and i must say it didn't really tickle my fancy (admittedly: without investing too much effort). some songs got my attention immediately though:
acid queen, baba, love rein ov'er me and some more.
today i was shopping for some albums (specific albums in mind), but while searching for any Tom Waits in vain, i came across "Who's next" (Deluxe edition) and decided to buy it.
i'm listening to it as i'm typing this (getting in tune) and i must say; once again i am sceptic whether i'll grow to love this album (speaking extremely prematurely). i know this album is considered as one of the all time great rock and roll releases. anyway, without really committing to a definite argument, i'll end of with a question:
anyone here love/hate this album/band with absurd abundance??
How do you have a name like "glasshouse" and not already be a Who fanatic?
Their best four records are Who's Next, Quadrophenia, Tommy, and Endless Wire. Live at Leeds is also kick-ass.
As for that DVD set, it's not that good. The Tommy disk is the Who at their absolute worst, In fact I will go so far to say that that's NOT the Who, it's a bunch of hired guns playing sterilized a version of their FOR them. It's soft rock... from what was once the most exciting and violent band out there. PUKE! The *worst* thing about the '89 tour was that they seemed genuinely excited to be there, but the arrangements sucked a metric ton of ass. Compared, with the '82 tour, when they were actually attempting play rock and roll, but sleepwalking through the whole thing. The '89 tour harmed their reputation immensely, and despite kicking a ton of ass in the last 8-10 years, they've never fully recovered in the mainstream. *(No wonder Robert Plant doesn't want to fuck around with LZ's legacy).
The Quad disc is better, at least that *almost* sounds like the Who, but Simon is still playing all of Pete's leads, and Roger has a sore throat or something-- and the audio/video quality sucks.0 -
reversedarwinism wrote:I've listened to a friend's cousin's who albums. They don't do anything for me. A little too cheesy, IMO. My mom was always my biggest provider of music and musical tastes growing up. She had some Who albums, I could never get into it back then either. I just really don't hear what is so great about them.
Cheesy? The Who are the original punk rock band. One of the most innovative rock & roll bands ever.0 -
I Can't Reach You
I'm a million ages past you
A million years behind you too
A thousand miles up in the air
A trillion times I've seen you there
Your hair is golden, mine is grey
You walk on grass, it turns to hay
You blood is blue and mine is red
My body strains, but the nerves are dead
I can't reach you
I've strained my eyes
I can't reach you
I've split my sides
I can't reach
Tryin' to get on you
See, feel or hear from you
The distances grow greater now
You drink champagne and past me plow
You fly your plane right over my head
You're still alive and I'm nearly dead
I can't reach you
With arms outstretched
I can't reach you
I crane my neck
I can't reach
Tryin' to get on you
See, feel or hear from you
Once I caught a glimpse
Of your unguarded, untouched heart
Our fingertips touched and then
My mind tore us apart
I can't reach you
With arms outstretched
I can't reach you
I crane my neck
I can't reach
Tryin' to get on you
See, feel or hear from you
I can't reach you
With arms outstretched
I can't reach you
I crane my neck
I can't reach
Tryin' to get on you
See, feel or hear from youIf I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?0 -
A Quick One While He's Away - Live, Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus
[I. Her Man's Been Gone]
Her man's been gone
For nearly a year
He was due home yesterday
But he ain't here
Her man's been gone
For nigh on a year
He was due home yesterday
But he ain't here
[II. Crying Town]
Down your street your crying is a well-known sound
Your street is very well known, right here in town
Your town is very famous for the little girl
Whose cries can be heard all around the world
[III. We Have A Remedy]
Fa la la la la la
Fa la la la la
Fa la la la la la
Fa la la la la
We have a remedy
You'll appreciate
No need to be so sad
He's only late
We'll bring you flowers and things
Help pass your time
We'll give him eagle's wings
Then he can fly to you
Fa la la la la la
Fa la la la la
Fa la la la la la
Fa la la la la
Fa la la la la la
Fa la la la la la
We have a remedy
Fa la la la la la la
We have a remedy
Fa la la la la la la
We have a remedy
Fa la la la la la la
We have a remedy
Fa la la la la la la
[spoken]
We have a remedy.
We have!
Little girl, why don't you stop your crying?
I'm gonna make you feel all right
[IV. Ivor The Engine Driver]
My name is Ivor
I'm an engine driver
I know him well
I know why you feel blue
Just 'cause he's late
Don't mean he'll never get through
He told me he loves you
He ain't no liar, I ain't either
So let's have a smile for an old engine driver
So let's have a smile for an old engine driver
Please take a sweet
Come take a walk with me
We'll sort it out
Back at my place, maybe
It'll come right
You ain't no fool, I ain't either
So why not be nice to an old engine driver?
Better be nice to an old engine driver
Better be nice to an old engine driver
[V. Soon Be Home]
We'll soon be home
We'll soon be home
We'll soon
We'll soon, soon, soon be home
We'll soon be home
We'll soon be home
We'll soon
We'll soon, soon, soon be home
Come on, old horse
Soon be home
Soon be home
Soon
We'll soon, soon, soon be home
We'll soon
We'll soon, soon, soon be home
We'll soon be home
Soon be home ...
[VI. You Are Forgiven]
Dang, dang, dang, dang, dang, dang, dang, dang, dang
Cello, cello, cello, cello, cello, cello
Cello, cello, cello, cello, cello, cello
Cello, cello, cello, cello, cello, cello
Cello, cello, cello, cello, cello, cello
I can't believe it
Do my eyes deceive me?
Am I back in your arms?
Away from all harm?
It's like a dream to be with you again
Can't believe that I'm with you again
I missed you and I must admit
I kissed a few and once did sit
On Ivor the Engine Driver's lap
And later with him, had a nap
You are forgiven, you are forgiven, you are forgiven ... [ad lib]
You are forgivenIf I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?0 -
So Sad About Us - The Who, Marquee Club, London 1967
Version from 2001, Pete Townshend, Paul Weller, Royal Albert Hall
The Beeders on Letterman, covering "So Sad About Us"
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la
So sad about us
So sad about us
Sad that the news is out now
Sad, suppose we can't turn back now
Sad about us
So bad about us
So bad about us
Bad - never meant to break up
Bad - suppose we'll never make up
Bad about us
Apologies mean nothing
When the damage is done
But I can't switch off my loving
Like you can't switch off the sun
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la la la
So sad about us
So sad about us
Sad - never meant to break up
Sad - suppose we'll never make up
Sad about us

Armenia City In The Sky
If you're troubled and you can't relax
Close your eyes and think of this
If the rumors floating in your head all turn to facts
Close your eyes and think of this
Armenia, city in the sky
Armenia, city in the sky
If you ever want to lose some time
Just take off, there's no risk
If you ever want to disappear
Just take off, and think of this
Armenia, city in the sky
Armenia, city in the sky
The sky is glass, the sea is brown
And everyone is upside-down
Armenia, city in the sky
Armenia, city in the sky
Freak out!
Freak out!If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?0 -
Substitute - Live with Kelly Jones of the Stereophonics, Royal Albert Hall, 2001
[you really don't need a "regular" Who version, this one is fucking spine tingling!]
Video for The Ramones cover version - standard Ramones, has nothing on the above, but fun
You think we look pretty good together
You think my shoes are made of leather
But Im a substitute for another guy
I look pretty tall but my heels are high
The simple things you see are all complicated
I look pretty young, but Im just back-dated, yeah
Substitute your lies for fact
I can see right through your plastic mac
I look all white, but my dad was black
My fine looking suit is really made out of sack
I was born with a plastic spoon in my mouth
The north side of my town faced east, and the east was facing south
And now you dare to look me in the eye
Those crocodile tears are what you cry
Its a genuine problem, you wont try
To work it out at all you just pass it by, pass it by
Substitute me for him
Substitute my coke for gin
Substitute you for my mum
At least Ill get my washing doneIf I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?0 -
oh.
that didn't raise your spine enough?
I'm One - Eddie & Pete, House of Blues, Chicago 1999
same great song, even more amazing - Royal Albert Hall, 2001
Every year is the same
Every year is the same
And I feel it again,
And I feel it again,
Im a loser - no chance to win.
Im a loser - no chance to win.
Leaves start falling,
Leaves start falling,
Come down is calling,
Come down is calling,
Loneliness starts sinking in.
Loneliness starts sinking in.
But Im one.
But Im one.
I am one.
I am one.
And I can see
And I can see
That this is me,
That this is me,
And I will be,
And I will be,
Youll all see
Youll all see
Im the one.
Im the one.
Where do you get
Where do you get
Those blue blue jeans?
Those blue blue jeans?
Faded patched secret so tight.
Faded patched secret so tight.
Where do you get
Where do you get
That walk oh so lean?
That walk oh so lean?
Your shoes and your shirts
Your shoes and your shirts
All just right.
All just right.
But Im one etc.
But Im one etc.
I got a gibson
I got a gibson
Without a case
Without a case
But I cant get that even tanned look on my face.
But I cant get that even tanned look on my face.
Ill fitting clothes
Ill fitting clothes
I blend in the crowd,
I blend in the crowd,
Fingers so clumsy
Fingers so clumsy
Voice too loud.
Voice too loud.
But Im one.
But Im one.If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?0 -
i'm so glad i finally got around to buying this album (who's next: deluxe edition)! i'm loving it. the extra songs are mind blowing as well. i think the 2nd disk (featuring live performances) are some of the tightest rock and roll i've ever heard. Keith Moon's drumming is nothing short of divine and Pete's guitar is gem. 10/10 purchase.Athens, Greece: 2006/09/30

I agree. Great stuff.
You should try Live at Leeds. Just amazing! They play Tommy straight through and I enjoyed it much more live than studio. My blog for your boots:

FinsburyParkCarrots wrote:I used to love The Who between the ages of ten and twelve, but then I moved onto Hendrix and didn't really look back. However, Who's Next is a fine album. I think it's a pity Quadrophenia wasn't aborted at the time, like Lifehouse. Townshend might have distilled the best material from it, as he did with the Lifehouse material on Who's Next, and saved us the filler.
You are nuts.0 -
I won't say I "love" it but I do like it a lot. These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.0
