Caught the video.....the song is promising indeed.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.

St. Anger was Better then this....I've been trying. But again Anger was better.

Holy shit, first time I've seen this opinion:)

Haven't heard anything but the single (which is much better than St Anger) so I can't comment until the release. However, if St Anger is better than this one, I will be pretty let down by the hype I've seen
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”
  • I caught their world premiere broadcast today from Metallica HQ. It was really cool - Dave Grohl was the MC and they played 6 songs off the new album. I thought my car speakers were going to fry. Some of these songs are severely rocking! I thought my face would melt when they played All Nightmare Long and Broken, Beat & Scarred. This album flat out rocks hard.

Metallica or any band for that matter doesn't force anyone to buy their albums. It's the consumer's choice. You buy it or you don't.
It's true, but that doesn't mean you have to treat your fans like criminals. Metallica disgusted me with that outrage, they didn't need to go after napster with that much spite - what other band did this? and was metallica the only band getting ripped? Ask your fans to pay for your cd's, your shows but don't treat them like criminals seems a pretty sensible thing to do.
And anyways people who truly like music tend to pay the artists they like, even if they start by downloading stuff. And honestly, I wish I had downloaded Load/Reload before buying them.

Anyways, the 3 songs I heard sound nice, but I have a hard time with James voice.

    Some brilliant tracks on there.

Shame "the new song" wasn't on it, only the beast of a riff thats in it. I wonder what they did with it.

I used to feel the same way as you, but I didn't really understand what it was that got Metallica upset about Napster. The reason Lars went after Napster was that an unfinished version of "I Disapear" was leaked on the internet. This upset them because it wasn't the official version, they didn't want anyone to hear it until they got it right. I can now understand how this can upset an artist. As an artist, you want to make sure that the work you release is the finished product, napster robbed them of this. You know it's like when you write an essay for school, you don't want your teacher to grade it after only one paragraph, you want to finish writing it before you let the teacher decide whether you get an A or an F. So I think Metallica may have overreacted a bit, but i think it was justified because it wasn't really about losing money (even if it did seem that way), it was really about losing integrity as an artist, and unfortunately the fans took it the wrong way.

Plenty of artists felt the sam way as Lars with the napster thing but they were all to afraid of a backlash to say anything. He may have gone a bit OTT with it but he was completly right to do it.

On another note i've got the album and it's FUCKING AWESOME. I havnt really bothered with Metallica since collage but damn this album is sssooooooo good.

  • i think the new album is awesome personally, finally were able to stop with all of the experimenting and just get back to basics, really like what i have heard and cant wait for the philly show as i have floor seats
9/1/2000 - E-Centre, Camden, 'Sometimes' started and I was hooked...
  • I wouldn't say welcome back. Let the album sink in a bit first.

Some people hold their opinions that Load and Reload were good, could be, i personally didn't like them. Not because they were "bluesy" or "more melodic", not even because the band made a twist in their sound. Some (very few) tracks i could sit down and listen, but anyways to each his own, i do respect the fact that some stuff is great for some and sucks for others.
Death Magnetic is out and i can say that this time i personally didn't felt let down. I have given it a couple listens and haven't felt rejection towards them as i sensed with Load, Reload and St. Anger. I wouldn't say this sounds like Master, Ride or And Justice but at least it rocks. I could be wrong but throught the cd you can hear musical traits from all the past albums blended all together.
Songs i found good til now?..That Was Just Your Life, The End Of The Line, All Nightmare Long and My Apocalypse. I still don't get that Unforgiven part delivery, i think that it would've been better if they'd just named the song differently (aside from the fact that it might have a lyrical concept encrypted).
  • Welcome back, indeed. Of the 6 songs I've heard, it's 6 / 6 songs that are pretty good, a couple are GREAT. All Nightmare Long being one of the great ones. I like both Unforgivens, I bet #3 will be pretty great as well.

I have listened to that song about 30 times and I will go out on a limb and say its one of the best out of their entire catalog. Full of Hetfield riff mastery and some of the best solos from Kirk in a really long time. Its epic.

I can't believe more people aren't complimenting them, or at least the film maker Thomas Vinterberg, on the new 'film/video', I thought it was extraordinary.

btw, anyone who hasn't see Some Kind of Monster...get it here, bargain

Pearl Jam was the only band who stood up to Ticketmaster. Does that mean they were in the wrong?

there was a 'coffin' edition, with a t shirt, and dvd and stuff....it was pretty expensive, don't know if it's still available.

    It's pretty awesome itself :)
i wouldn't consider myself a HUGE metallica fan, but i do own quite a few albums from early days to recent, and a couple of dvds, just by being a music fan in general. i've been reading up on the hype & peoples comments so far & the feedback sounds good. so i checked out this clip (cheers jamie) and fuck me, that was awesome. EPIC. i didn't mind the 'load' albums & even went through a decent phase of st. anger, but THIS is what metallica should sound like!

The Unforgiven 3 is the only song on the album i'm not sure of yet. I love the intro but not much else. Maybe with time tho.

This is true, but the parallel I draw is bands sticking their necks out for the right reasons.

May be the weakest track, but not bad.

That Was Just Your Life kicks ass!!

And can see myself fist pumping along with "show your scars!!" on Broken Beat and Scarred at the next Metallica show!!

  • I'm giving the music a thumbs up. It didn't grab me as being outstanding, but for sure better than St. Anger and after a couple listens it does get catchy.

  • I'll never understand people's problems with Load and ReLoad, aside from the fact that they're not full on brutalz. I love those albums. I even like St. Anger.

Load is a great album in my opinion. obviously way different from 80s stuff but it's fantastic. I don't skip one song on that album. Reload is ok, not as good as Load. St. Anger is not particularly good but I give them kudos for trying something new. At least they're not playing the same shit over and over again.

Btw, Death Magnetic sounds great so far. The Day That Never Comes is a fantastic single...probably my second favorite so far behind All Nightmare Long.

  • I'm listening to that interview that they did with Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins and I really like All Nightmare Long.
  • the unforgiven 3 took me a few listens to get into it but i love it now, theres not a bad song on this album, cant wait to see them live again and hear how the new tracks sound at a show

Maybe the fans did not get their money's worth -- I am one of them -- but they got something in return.....the boys got nothing from napster
Except new fans who probably bought tickets for their live shows at stupid prices.

I remember back when I used to listen to Metallica, every album cost about £16, consistently, in every major UK music shop. Not once did the prices go down. I was a kid, I couldn't afford to buy the music.

Basically, an artist should put people enjoying their art first, getting paid off it second, otherwise they aren't an artist, they're a whore. Think of all the new fans they got, kids who perhaps weren't old enough to appreciate getting a brand new 12" copy of Kill 'Em All and the excitement of that. The digital age, for better or worse, has lessened the sense of existential worth of music, bands have to deal with that and stop bitching about it. They're fucking rich enough anyway. I downloaded Ride the Lightning illegally before I shelled out my own money for it. Metallica still treated people like me as criminals and then expected people to spend £15 or whatever on each and every new, ever-diminishing works and acting like they deserve some sort of recompense for the apparent hard work it took to shout "My lifestyle determines my deathstyle" over a mindlessly chugged guitar riff.

Let's get some damn perspective if we're going to talk about theft here.

As for the new stuff, it's alright.
